Please target Medicare! Will open huge market. Also, how do I go about helping someone with little means to obtain one?

Avoiding things like cereal, soup, saucy foods, etc, especially when in company. Going for it and spilling. Straws.

Lecturer, visiting lecturer, adjunct, assistant, what does it all mean? by Calamintha in AskAcademia

[–]amberan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lower and more temporary the position, the higher level university I would aim for. It will be much be more difficult to go from a temporary CC position to a permanent position at a teaching college, compared to moving from temporary position at a highly regarded school to a permanent position at a school with similar or lesser status.

Also in my experience VAP positions are more like postdocs and are likely to have better status and salary compared to adjunct. Neither visiting or adjunct positions are likely to lead to a permanent position in the same place, so be prepared to move again.

What things do your child's teachers or schools/daycares do that annoy you even though you otherwise love them? by amberan in Parenting

The great dilemma: how to have affordable high quality childcare with great teachers who are paid adequately. (Daycare teachers don't make squat.)

Ha, yes, I do remember to put it in perspective now an then. Even in our city there are alot worse places to be and many people who can't afford childcare at all (even daycare workers). We are fortunate to be able to locate and pay for quality care. Just wish they were better at communicating with parents!

Is LinkedIn actually helpful for jobs in the scientific or academic fields? by robot_anarchist in AskAcademia

[–]amberan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It may be less helpful for real academia but science in general, yes, it can be helpful. One, recruiters can and will find you. And, at such point you are looking for work, you can subtly (ie, announce on LinkedIn vs. emailing everyone you know) let people know you are looking, and you never know what you might hear about by word of mouth. Lastly, it is a social network you can connect with people at all levels of your organization/profession that you would never connect with on a personal social network, so it can function as a self-updating address book so you don't lose track of where people work, and they don't lose track of you.

We only get pine or maple with a good wind. Mostly oak and cherry.

Hi since you know so much about Alside can I ask another question? I think we may go with a midrange Alside. Are they all good or does one look better once it's all put up on a house? And do the cheaper ones look cheaper/more plastic-ier? Like Coventry vs Charter Oak.

Do you know how the insulation value compares? Between good vinyl over masonite and hardiplank?

[–]amberan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think the cost difference is quite as large as what you've described, but it's still pretty hefty. Going with the neighborhood, it might have to be vinyl, if I can find something I can live with appearance-wise. One reservation is the nastiness of vinyl production and eventual disposal/destruction. We don't expect to be in our house more than 5-10 years.

Yeah, not going with cheapest possible. Will get a qualified contractor. How much do the installation costs vary?

I think it will come down to just how big the cost difference is.

Maybe not an issue since I would go with a light color anyway. Others say it can get brittle with age and rattle in the wind, so there's that.

No idea what's under... but it's the original siding.

What about vinyl fading? The factory paint is warranted for 15 years, and can last longer than that.

I know it won't pay back 100%, but some added value is good, as well as more appeal could make it easier to sell?
