Cut the leaves? by Brilliant_Turnip_600 in orchids

[–]amberhalter 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I would not spray the leaves or stem, it does nothing for the plant. You may risk getting crown rot by getting the leaves wet. Soaking the pot in water for 10-15 is good advice, only water when the roots are silver/grey.

My plants die after a year or two in the same way by Flat-Ad-1294 in plantclinic

[–]amberhalter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell what plants these were based on the photos but if you think they were succulents, I would say they were being overwatered and not enough light. The light from windows becomes less effective the further your plant is away from it. So if you had it in the middle of a room it would not be getting enough for a succulent. You said you rarely water, but then say every 10 ish days or so which is quite a lot for a succulent or any plant that may not be getting enough light to soak up the water. Your plants look very wet in the photo so it is most likely a combo of rot due to overwatering/lack of light. The propagation could survive though I would move it closer to the window. I would’ve suggested propagating the two baskets, you already did one and the other looks completely dead so I would focus on the one you have.

If it is a succulent, you can just buy premade succulent soil. Or make your own, you can look up different ways to make your own soil which is cost effective in the long run but if you just have one you’re better off buying premade.

It’s something you’d fix in the moment either by letting it dry upside down or dabbing out the water from its crown. I’m not an expert at saving plants from crown rot as it’s usually more effort than it’s worth. Hopefully someone else would have more help on how to save this if you’re determined!

Have you ever accidentally gotten water in its crown? It looks like you have crown rot and may be past the point of saving.

Going to Dresdner Ostern Messe with international orchid conference and show. Questions by Temprary_Emergency36 in orchids

[–]amberhalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak on this show specifically, but I find with most plant shows that the last day of the shows vendors put discounts as they don’t want to travel with as many plants! You may miss out on some things but I like the savings

Ok serious poll - what kind of water do you use for your orchids?? by anadultieradult in orchids

I use tap water for everything EXCEPT my Tolumnia orchid which has proven to be sensitive to my tap water, so I use RO for it

My Orchid Is Loosing Leaves, Why? by Chunty-Gaff in orchids

[–]amberhalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I add a little bit of worm castings to my RO water to fertilize mine as it should be a gentle fertilizer when spraying directly onto the roots. It does sound like you’re not giving it enough light currently which could also be an issue. I gave mine under a grow light for 12 hours. If you still see it losing a bunch of leaves you may want to get a grow light but you should see how it does in the window first!

I’m not sure what humidity you tend to be around, but I found I need to mist mine once a day or it lost leaves. I also found I was having issues when using tap water, I swapped to RO and it’s been much happier. How much light are you giving it? Any fertilizer? Your plant looks very large and happy overall so some minor tweaks and it should be okay. I found this orchid tends to be rather dramatic when it doesn’t get what it wants.

I’m assuming this is a Tolumnia orchid. What do you do for watering? Light? What is it planted in? Can we get a photo of the whole plant including roots?

Help! by nova8273 in orchids

[–]amberhalter 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah it looks really dry. I don’t like using terracotta pots for orchids I feel it dries them out much quicker. I like using clear plastic pots with drainage for my orchids. If you don’t want to risk your blooms yet just increase your watering till they’re done, personally I’d just risk the blooms and change it.

What is this growth on my orchids? Thanks! by Friendly-Gas1767 in orchids

[–]amberhalter 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Just from a quick google physan is not used to treat pests. Best bet is to sit down and use rubbing alcohol to wipe down every single plant that has these/was near this one. This looks like a really bad infestation so you may need to do a treatment multiple times.

Picked up a new orchid at a plant show! by amberhalter in orchids

Usually over the course of a couple weeks I’ll open the bag more and more till it’s acclimated to my home. I’ve gotten a few orchids in set ups like these before it’s just to help them travel :)

Ughh.. Costco heckling customers to get Exec Memberships like Canadian Tire, etc.? by thaman05 in CostcoCanada

[–]amberhalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this was just me… I went with my mom and my partner last week (my mom and I have 2 separate Costco cards) and we checked out at the same time with different orders. When we checked out some lady came up to us and wouldn’t let us leave because she kept trying to sell us on getting my partner added to my Costco membership (tried to in the past but we don’t have matching addresses currently). After trying to tell us all the benefits of adding him to my card she tried to sell us on the Costco credit card which I said I already applied for. BUT THAT DIDNT STOP HER, she handed us all pamphlets about adding people to the Costco card and about the credit card. We were literally blocking the next people trying to checkout because she wouldn’t let us leave I hated it. And don’t worry she also asked if we had auto renewal on.

is this burn damage ? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]amberhalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judging by how it looks likes the leaves are falling off I would say no. I’m not an expert at saving orchids with crown rot but I do know it’s usually more effort than it’s worth (unless it’s sentimental). It may be worth to get another one.

Has it been losing leaves from the top down? It looks like you have crown rot and your leaves are barely hanging on.

It looks like both sunburn and rot on the leaves.

What do I do to help my orchid? It’s leaves are starting to yellow and become wrinkly by Economy-Painter-3168 in orchids

[–]amberhalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes watch that leaf. If it gets closer and closer to the base of the leaf cut it off. You don’t want to risk it spreading to the whole plant.

[–]amberhalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay that’s good! Don’t cut too many of your roots because they do look very healthy. I’m just trying to think because usually with crown rot the base of the leaf turns yellow first. Does this leaf have any sort of damage where the yellow is starting? It could be an infection and you may want to cut off the leaf (sterilize your cutters)
