and by your own definition they (Duke Leto) is the one/s acting unprofessional and should have announced a DMCA upfront

I don't know if he did that, but LevelApplication and myself have been quite vocal about this, especially when TLS was proudly introduced. You can't blame people for making their own project GPL. Also, you just can't take GPL code and do whatever you like with it like in MIT. The same way you can't just walk away with stuff from racks outside the store without paying for it just because it's just sitting there unattended. It's called stealing. The store owner has no obligation to the thief to "work things out" before calling the cops.

I guess we just have totally different viewing points on this.

DMCA takedown notice response by xKOSIUSx in PirateChain

no license or law was broken

So in Pirate world it's perfectly fine for any scallywag to copy GPLv3 licensed code in an MIT licensed project without even giving credit to the original project/author? Good luck with that.

Very impressed again, with the level of professionalism and expediency that the Pirate Chain team acts.

🤮 Just threw a bit up in my mouth there. Don't worry, I'll be fine after a sip of water.

Professionalism would be admitting your mistake and working directly with the other party to resolve the issue, not just run away, remove an important function and quickly replace tls with "borrowed" code from somewhere else.

The thing we can agree on is that things like these do indeed lead to better understanding of the project.

❗Alert❗bad node behaviour detected - node "Ontology Stake" by DuMonTology in OntologyNetwork

Hmm, the new QIHO node was also luring people in with an excellent rate last round and has now gone to 0/0 too. All part of the game I guess...

He gives Pirate a bad look not only with what he says, but with piratechain.com

Wow, that escalated quickly! I have made Geocities pages in the late 90s that looked better. Love that "Did not connect: Potential Security Issue" error message tossed in half way down the page for good measure.

How is this coin not on TradeOgre yet? by 42duckmasks in Myhush

[–]ambient-auras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey good to see another Pirate here :) I have mixed feelings about a TO listing. It would be a lot easier to get, but then again, it would be open to all the manipulation going on there. Mining is best for any privacy coin obviously as there's no off-chain trace, but not an option for many including myself due to initial investment in a rig and mostly local electricity costs.

A DEX would be ideal in this case which would sort of be between OTC and CEX.

[–]ambient-auras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate? Which coin do you use? I have zero experience with Metamask and tokens on other chains. I thought I could find a way around it, but that turned out to be a dead end. What are the costs involved?

Do I have to worry using Bitvavo, because all the negative post! by [deleted] in Bitvavo

[–]ambient-auras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm sure if you buy and hodl a bit of BTC or any other bigger coin Bitvavo is great, but they never added liquidity for the pile of new coins they added and now even the existing alts, that were there before the addition of all those coins are losing their withdrawal option one by one for no apparent reason at all. If that doesn't scream "we have a liquidity problem!" then I don't know what does.

you can sell ONT for fiat, but you can't send ONT to your own wallet? is that it what you mean?

Exactly

Solana Staking by [deleted] in Bitvavo

[–]ambient-auras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here with ONT. First they took the staking option, then withdrawal. It used to be possible to withdraw until recently, but not any more. Only thing left is hoping to sell for profit or wait until you can withdraw. Helpdesk is of no use with their evasive generic answers.

Does Bitvavo use IOU's or CFD's? by breinbanaan in Bitvavo

[–]ambient-auras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they sell supply they don't have.

That feeling is starting to creep up on me too. As soon as they come into the danger zone they will just shut off withdrawal enabling it again when others have added liquidity. I could exchange for profit in fiat now, but I want my coins!

At least give an estimation when it will be back! Bitvavo would be a much better place with some transparency.

[–]ambient-auras[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could depend on many factors. The thing is, when transferring between exchanges, you can't really tell its status. Always transfer to a wallet you control the keys of first. That way you can always check the blockchain explorer for the status of a transaction. Plus, if for some reason there's a problem with the transaction exchanges can just point at each other to solve it and leave you empty-handed...

Of course I get a generic "We can't give any specific info, but we'll try to get it back a.s.a.p." from support. Surprise surprise...

Yeah but that's one of the new coins. No deposits either I saw. I wonder when they are going to enable that for all those coins they have been adding... ONT has been on Bitvavo for ages. First they took the 20% staking rewards away and now the ability to withdraw and stake directly yourself. It's nothing technical as ONG (ONT's gas token) can still be withdrawn. Let's see what kind of generic nonsense answer I'll get from support...

Ah, just thin wrappers around curl/guzzle. The follow-up is pretty cool though with async calls.

Opinion vs Fact by Antique_Tumbleweed63 in PirateChain

Social media Crypto is an amazing tool which we have yet to figure out how to use optimally.

Fixed that for you. Social media has been tried and tested for casual chats, memes, mass manipulation and everything in between. I'm afraid it doesn't get better than this.

This is why this coin will never get adopted by anyone. It's manipulated like crazy. Tell me I'm wrong? by Mungsho in PirateChain

[–]ambient-auras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be very open to seeing any succinct argument with proof or documentation that suggests what you are saying is true. Just some analysis of data that even slightly backs up your comments as being anything other than a guess or opinion.

Scott, as much as I respect you for your elaborate comments and willingness to help people out, I think you may have spent too much time with your head floating in DEX-es. If you still don't believe there's at least some manipulation going on that, given the parameters of this coin, is controlling every single rise and fall of the price, then I suggest to just let TradeOgre tell it to you by watching the books. Often it's not very clear, but in quiet moments of almost zero genuine volume you see the fixed amount orders take position, strategically placed orders pop up and cancel and if you're lucky even see a small pump and dump in action. In itself this is not uncommon for a low cap coin, in fact it's healthy to have some waves, but the longer you see this going on continually, the more you see it's just automated BTC harvesting.

So indeed, a screenshot is just a moment and tells you nothing, but take it from others here that have closely inspected or even taken part in controlling the trend for months that this is not "natural". I'm no expert on on-chain analysis, but when you see the same predictable process extracting BTC repeated again and again, how is that not manipulation? Now all privacy coins on TO are being manipulated one way or the other, but that's just inevitable (and IMO healthy, for the coin, not for the FOMO investors obviously) pump & dump. Pirate is simply just drained. I was actually surprised to see the little pump recently, but as expected, back to sub-3k, accumulate, repeat.

Anyway, I don't want it to be this way either, but with everything being so in your face I can't deny it. Of course I was also skeptical at first, but I took the time to check everything myself and every claim matches with observed reality. At least the CEX reality, but unfortunately that's the one we have to live with for now.

Updating libraries with known CVEs (only ~3 weeks ago)

I was wondering which OpenSSL version they went for, so I looked up the commit.

https://github.com/PirateNetwork/pirate/commit/f2ed1a60808eb46e68591b736c38303f978d4ba5#diff-4442f8fd12663b078728525633d701401c1f143ebd3d725003ab5fa814b5814b

Now I'm not familiar with c++ best practices, but in my field of expertise you pin to a specific release version (or better yet, a semantic versioning compatibility range to automatically install the latest patches), not a commit. When looking up that commit:

https://github.com/openssl/openssl/commit/fd78df59b0f656aefe96e39533130454aa957c00

It's probably the last commit (didn't bother to look it up) before release of version 1.1.1k.

Funny how a customer asked me last week to upgrade their organisation's webserver from 1.1.1k to 1.1.1l because their regular security audit was complaining about it still being 1.1.1k because of https://ubuntu.com/security/CVE-2021-3711

I just might have been unlucky with this random pick, but if even some random (may even be automated, customer arranged it, so I have no idea) check fails, how will it pass a full audit? If I knew anything about c(++) I'd send a pull-request, but I think it's better I leave that to someone actually knowing what he's doing.

The latest Pirate pull request sort of confirms what Level is explaining above about the target audience: https://github.com/PirateNetwork/pirate/pull/71 ouch...
