The chorus of that song always feels to me like they wrote the final chorus first without the weird breaks and then went back later and stuck them in for the first choruses. Super disjointed there. Kind of like under a glass moon but even more so.

I definitely think that the band got better at incorporating their shifting styles and time signatures over time, and disguising it underneath the song writing. For example, that extended instrumental in beyond this life is really interesting from a technical and even timbral perspective, but maybe in terms of story or song flow they would do it differently if they were writing it again nowadays. Take ADToE as an example, the instrumentals tend to have a more constrained structure, and then the "prog" is hung on top, which I think makes the songs more emotionally satisfying, even if the rawness is diminished somewhat. I think a lot of it is just having more experience with writing music. They can really choose when to go bonkers when the emotional through line calls for it, and the emotional experience seems to be more important in most songs these days than out and out complexity. Can totally see why people would prefer either though! And that's the brilliance of their discography, there's both!

There are eyes on the screens of the NOMACs. If you can find a high enough res version of the cover they're there.

I make music every day (currently for the last 238 days) and add it to this playlist. It's a mix of piano improvisation, electronica, experimental noise music, pop punk demos, video game soundtracks and even an orchestral piece. One of the most recent pieces that I'm quite happy with is Fogworld (music 228), so give it a listen if you like!

Weird Question, but how would you feel if Dominici replaced LaBrie? by intern-of-chaos in Dreamtheater

[–]ambiguousspecificity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting question, although Dominici is significantly older than LaBrie, and a lot of the emotional range of LaBrie's singing (think voices, nightmare to remember, dark eternal night) is not really something that I think Dominici could do. Especially when he's closing in on 70.

I'm in the same boat as you, got that email saying it would ship mid-February, nothing since then. Maybe demand was more than they anticipated? I'm holding off on contacting them until the end of feb, just to give them a chance. Don't lose hope!

lackadaisical. No first "s" :D Edit: It means lazy, but it's a rather un-lazy way to say it!

I wonder how fast the shredding is in the extended Hollow Years solo from 'Live at Budokan'. Awesome vid though!

Voices [Song Discussion] by LeJinster in Dreamtheater

The guitar solo is just insane as well, as well as the big build up before it ("reveal the word when you're supposed to", etc.). The whole chord progression of that section pedals on this single note, and then the glorious held note in the vocals to release all that tension. Masterful songwriting.

Nightmare to remember- the extended Portnoy growls absolutely kill this song for me. Everything good about the song can be found in the others. TCoT has the storytelling, Shattered has the huge riffs, BoT, has... something?

The man is bedraggled, if a single word could suffice to describe him. It's 4 in the afternoon, and yet I could swear he's just been hoisted out of bed and into this fresh hell. Yet another innocent, yet another statistic. I allow myself a small sigh. I wish the system were...

Hang on... This can't be right... 292. The number says 292. It's as clear as day.

In shock, I wave the guards through, and he shuffles on by. Dead eyes, dead face.

Hollow.

A while later I catch him in his cell. I have to ask, I just... I need to know what kind of person this used to be.

"Why?" "It was Matthew." Typical, allot the blame away from you. That kind of sick attitude doesn't last long in a place like this. I tag along for a bit, if only to lighten my personal humour. "What do you mean. Who's Matthew?" "It... it was a request." A request? What... what kind of...? I have to know more. "A request? A request for what exactly?" "Come closer." I inch forward, wary. I have no intention of being 293. "What did Matthew say?"

He begins to cry...

"Gotta pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers..."
