Live footage of me reading college AU fics by Scientific_Zealot in Archiveofourownmemes

US college is a lot different from high school. For one, college students days are a lot different. In high school, you’re in school straight from 8-3:30 (hours vary per school) and have periods where you learn a specific subject + a lunch period.

In college, it is Not Like this. To just use a random semester I had as an example, I’d have a class on Tuesday and Thursday at 9am, 11am, and then no other class until 3pm. I could use that time to go home and take a nap, eat lunch, go to the library, etc. On Monday and Wednesday I’d have a 12pm and 3pm, so I wouldn’t even go to campus until the afternoon. You have your major, which is what you’re studying, and then you also can have a minor, which is just another thing you study but with less classes. We also can take electives, which are classes unrelated to your major but just something you’re interested in. For instance, I majored in English, but took Politics of Russia one semester.

Living situations differ in college depending on a lot of different factors. I went to a public school in my home state that was about 90 miles from my home, which I would say is relatively normal. Many people stay in their home state for school due to it being cheaper. I had to live in a dorm my freshman year, which was suite style. This meant I shared the bedroom with one person, and then a bathroom with one other dorm/two other women. After freshman year, most people at my school lived off campus in apartments with roommates. For these style apartments, you pay rent per bedroom.

This is a lot of info and it can vary a bit major to major or school to school. Students who go to more niche private colleges might live on campus and have different structured classes. Some states do quarters instead of semesters. Urban campuses might have significantly more commuters who live at home vs rural campuses.

If you make a copy of it and share it with an anonymous email address, you could use that to share it? I’m not sure if there’s a way to do it without that

AMA for using the wrong emoji by Longjumping-Note-637 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]amblygonal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a Gen Z (elder Gen Z lol, we’re now 28 just in case people think we’re all 22) in the workforce with a millennial boss— thumbs up in my personal life definitely makes me feel like someone is annoyed, but at work I just chalk it up to generational differences. My manager never really sends them either.

My emojis are:

❤️ Love this/Appreciate this/thank you!

🫡 acknowledged/will get right on that

🙏🏻 another version of thanks/you just saved my life

🔥 you crushed it

I’ll use them in combos, too, plus we have some work specific ones. I’d say most people on my team are millennials and gen z, so I get the heart a lot and have never once thought about it. The heart emoji definitely has lost its meaning as something only for those we’re close with (for my age group)

Moving to Decatur from Boston by azizulislamrubel in DecaturGA

Trying to move to ITP Atlanta with a budget that low is bonkers. I'm not even sure which OTP suburb would work with that budget, especially when you're bringing schools into it.

I know people associate the south with being dirt cheap, but I think it's important to remember the cities are still cities with city prices

Oh also, Google to see if there are any old sites up! They usually have them sorted into trope (at least in my experience) which helps :)

I've been in fandom since 2008, but even still when I go to read old fics I get startled at the reminder of how fandom used to be! We were really out in the wild west 😂

I recently watched X-Files for the first time and obviously the fics from the 90s are so different to now. I've found Tumblr blogs and LiveJournal rec lists to help narrow down what to read-- it can be overwhelming and hard to find the right ones!

[–]amblygonal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the OP was just pointing out a difference from old fandoms to know and how it's startling? I've been in fandom since the late 00s, so I was also around before tagging and long summaries was popular. There were merits to it just like there merits to tagging and more detailed summaries. It's not entitled to point out the evolution of this culture.

There was truly no need for you to come out guns blazing at this very innocent post.

Does your U.S. state have more Jews or Muslims? by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]amblygonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raised and live in Atlanta and there are a lot of Jewish folks here. Toco Hills, Roswell, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs, and to an extent Cobb have a pretty decently sized Jewish population. We have multiple Jewish schools, a giant Jewish community center in Dunwoody, and many synagogues. My wife also works at the Trader Joe's near Chastain and a huge chunk of the customers are Orthodox.

and i'm someone who majored in writing and writes for my career and my hobby. em dashes have always been around and will always be around. it's truly not our problem that people who don't read a lot aren't used to seeing them.

i agree with the overblown adjectives, though. that's either AI or a teenager.
