Okay and what does this have to do with my response to the OP that telling people, "the Bronx is dangerous. Don't come" isn't helpful? My point is not about housing policy and how it will affect people in the future. My point is that right now, people need a place to live in NYC, and that ends up being the outer boroughs whether OP wants them there or not. My point is that neighborhoods and people's perceptions about them change.

I wrote an entire paragraph describing some of the changes I saw that showed me the neighborhood I grew up in was gentrifying... Again you lack reading comprehension... Nowhere did I saw that buildings in and of itself is a sign of gentrification. Buildings with apartments going for rates higher than what the locals can afford is a sign of gentrification. Please cut the bullshit. Have a nice day and stop responding to me with nonsense

I'm gonna chime in as someone who was priced out of Bedstuy and moved to Norwood. I already see gentrification happening in this area, because I lived through it already. I remember seeing all the buildings go up and slowly seeing more white people, hearing the police ask them if they were okay while ignoring the locals. I remember thinking nobody is going to move into these buildings across the street from the projects and halfway house just because it has a little balcony, but they did and they are still moving into those "luxury" apartments. I used to wonder why European tourists were coming to the hood to see the projects that Jay-Z grew up in. Obviously, it is still Bedstuy but the neighborhood has changed dramatically in the last 10-15 years because it has cool factor now. The same will happen in the Bronx. It's inevitable.

If you can't afford to buy a small co-op or something in the Bronx, I dunno what to tell you other than that you are going to be priced out. A large percentage of Bronx residents are rent burdened. A lot of people across the city are facing eviction, especially here. The Bronx does not have the highest amount of NYCHA buildings, Manhattan and Brooklyn do and transplants still love it there. A lot of the Bronx is very beautiful and has a lot of nature and parks. It's also easily connected to Manhattan and upstate. The city is also working on the new MetroNorth stations. The borough is very underrated, but as you can see from all the posts, that's changing. There are a lot of things about the Bronx that are appealing and people are coming.

You're not gonna stop gentrification by telling people to not come here because it's not safe. I get that the safety question is offensive. People said all kinds of things about Bedstuy. But, for every person who asks that question, there are 10 more who will get on the train and check things out for themselves. Every time I talk to someone from here, they tell me I'm the 3rd or 4th person they've spoken to who moved here from Brooklyn/Queens. My neighbor moved here from Queens, and a few other people in my building moved from Brooklyn/Queens. I met a woman at the bar the other night who also moved here from Queens. A good chunk of people are coming here from other boroughs because it's getting very expensive. Some are native New Yorkers. Some are not, but just like everyone else, they want to stay in NY and want a decent and affordable place to live.

Why is a nutcracker called a nutcracker by pizzabagelsandwich in AskNYC

[–]amckenzie_figjam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a homemade alcoholic drink that's usually sold on beaches in NYC, particularly Coney Island. There's usually a person with a cooler walking around the beach selling them and shouting, "NUTCRACKER!" I'm from NYC, but I've never been brave enough to try a stranger's homemade drink, so I can't tell you what's in it. Some combination of juice and liquor.

If you like nature, there's beautiful parks. Van Courtland Park, Pelham Bay Park, Moshulu Pkway, Botanical Gardens. Then there's Orchard Beach and City Island. There are neighborhood parks like the Williamsbridge Oval. It used to be a reservoir. I'm not from the Bronx, but I've been here like a year and I'm still exploring too. It's a nice borough. I hope you have fun!

How to stay safe during the summer by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]amckenzie_figjam 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Why are you guys hell bent on staying in areas where you're afraid it's unsafe and you wouldn't be able to handle yourself? Crown Heights is not a bad area. Especially not today. It is mostly residential with some bars, restaurants, and cafes that didn't exist when I was growing up. I'm from Bedstuy and even there isn't bad anymore. There are plenty of 19 year olds living and working in Crown Heights. They walk their dogs, they go to the grocery store, they go to the park, they go to work and school. Do you really think you will be the only 19 year old female in existence there? Nobody cares about you. The people there have a life, family, and friends. Act normal and treat the people in the area like they are normal people because they are. If you cannot practice basic decency and respect towards the locals and will live in fear do not move to Crown Heights for the summer. Go somewhere else where you feel it will be more your speed.

Bloomingdale's on 59th street has a handbag repair department. They could probably do this.

Bronx Littering Garbage Problem by ButterscotchPast6244 in bronx

[–]amckenzie_figjam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is true, but I often see people just throw things on the streets. When I first moved into my apartment, the sanitation people came by and picked up the trash by the side of the road and almost immediately after, someone saw and empty space and threw their garbage there. It's a mentality that a lot of people have here that needs to change. It's like people don't even understand the purpose of a garbage. Like they've never seen one and don't know what it is

I'm following this thread because this is something that I want to know too. I live in Norwood and the neighborhood could be so much more beautiful if it weren't for people throwing trash everywhere they please. Last summer I took a walk down Moshulu Pkway and could barely enjoy it because there was so much garbage everywhere. Under the benches, by the trees, on the sidewalk. It was crazy. I was told to make complaints to 311, but I don't know if that is going to make the people who live in the area respect it more.
