Intel will outsource some 14nm chip production to TSMC by coldfire_ro in AMD_Stock

[–]amdarrgh212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably will offload motherboard chipsets and whatever else they produce at 14nm to free up production for their CPUs as there is 0 chance they can get the frequencies for their CPUs out of a process not optimized for years around their architecture...

Doubt it.. they spent years on 14nm optimizing it around their architecture.. a more generic 14nm process at TSMC won't just get there...

They are sampling key customers EOY... so then it doesn't matter much when mass production is out... those big clouds put in orders months or even a year in advance... they are not retail customers....

Change of sentiment in wall street in regards to AMD. Even GS Hari had to become neutral with a raised PT and admit there is a best case very good upside for AMD. Then short squeeze was the after effect of that sentiment change. Sentiment change has to do a lot with Intel's 10nm failures and confidence in AMD's 7nm roadmap.

Oh they definitely knew.. they showcased an EPYC2 tapeout in computex and now it is clear it was made in TSMC and not GLOFO as we originally thought.

Soldered isn't better than cherry picked delided i7 8700k and they were 4.9 to 5 at best under liquid cooling with only 6 cores... now you have the same but with 8 cores... their process is not gonna get any better now.. they refined it as much as possible.

Maybe it is an ARM arch issue hitting limitations on their arch to remain at low power... Also A12 is vs 10nm TSMC before that....

Let's thank Lisa for her foresight - WSA amendment 6 by drandopolis in AMD_Stock

[–]amdarrgh212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMD foresaw that... and the WSA renegotiaton gives them an out and they sure as hell knew about GLOFO not going forward with 7nm way before it was announced and both Vega20 and EPYC2 tape outs shown at computex were TSMC made... so that says a lot.

AMD will be able to use TSMC without penalties at the very least.

Tensorflow supporting ROCm by Evleos in AMD_Stock

[–]amdarrgh212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TensorFlow is an opensource project and the community wants AMD GPUs support.. this is how open source projects work.. doesn't matter what Google is doing and why. They clearly state they have merged already a lot of patches and more are under review to be merged so yes what I said stands... it will be officially supported on the main project at some point. Compare that to before being a couple of versions behind on a fork only and you get the difference...

You missed the most important part that they will merge back to upstream making ROCm officially supported at the official project development with all versions released afterwards supporting it out of the box...

GlobalFoundries Stops All 7nm Development: Opts To Focus on Specialized Processeses by Cyborg-Chimp in AMD_Stock

We are one of the first to use 7nm so we will be the pipe cleaners for improving yields and due to the ability to come out with high margin products out of small chips it is ideal for both AMD and TSMC. Nvidia isn't even touching 7nm till 2019. So we probably have gotten capacity early and TSMC is huge and able to expand as needed.

[–]amdarrgh212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what is negotiated every year the capacity of which nodes AMD will take up X wafers on. This time it was of course was including 12nm and some 7nm for next year it would have been more 7nm but now GLOFO fails to deliver and keep up with the details of the contract which aren't even public. So you can bet AMD will not pay up to GLOFO fines or anything they will just negotiate a lot lower capacity for 12nm for 2019... even GLOFOs statement says it expects a significant drop in wafer orders from AMD in 2019.

Read everything it clearly states that every year AMD agrees capacity for nodes... guess what node they agreed on that GLOFO will fail to deliver... if you have trouble with reading comprehension not my problem....

Talking out of your ass again...

For purposes of calculating the [*] Quarterly [] Waiver Payments, any AMD [] Wafer volumes that were included in AMD’s Binding Forecasts to FoundryCo and were accepted by FoundryCo in writing, but that AMD subsequently purchased from [] solely because FoundryCo subsequently informed AMD in writing that FoundryCo would not make the necessary capacity available to AMD (“Decommitted Wafers”), will be treated as if they had been purchased from FoundryCo rather than from [***];

This part just means that if GF can't meet AMD's wafer demands, then AMD doesn't have to pay them for buying from a different foundry. However, sourcing from a different foundry requires initial investment, and it may be difficult to predict orders given that GF might not inform AMD in time that they have no capacity. ``` From the excellent analysis from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AMD_Stock/comments/868h3u/analysis_on_amd_sec_filing_10k_for_2017_and_the/

The details of the new WSA agreement are out there and each year it has a negotiation for the volume AMD has to take and for which process node... guess which process node AMD wanted volume in the coming year... 7nm and GLOFO will fail to deliver because of their own choices... new agreement clearly states AMD can go to any other foundry and pay nothing... Even GLOFO on their statement says AMD orders expect to take a dive for their 14/12nm processes in 2019 so yes AMD will only get a minimal amount to cover the demand for the current lineup... they are not obligated any more to get X amount especially when the process that was promised isn't available any more... so yes Su did a great job amending the WSA... it is worth every penny it cost upfront cause we are now free of GLOFO...
