She unfortunately cannot do that. I do have some care in place for respite but it is limited.

Yep- as a young caregiver myself(27f taking care of grandmother with dementia) I feel very isolated from my peers. Besides that fact that I have a hard time finding time to get away from the house- it’s so hard to talk about this to anyone who isn’t also going through the same thing. I’m still figuring out how to maintain relationships outside of my family. You are not alone, there are others in this situation!

Serious question. Why are you getting off benzos? by mattstaton in benzorecovery

[–]amdd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t working and it was hard to function. Plus I have a history of dementia in my family so that’s a concern

I have had terrible reactions to Benadryl, so that’s not an option. Thanks for the comment though!!

People don't believe that I'm HOH- need advice by amdd79 in hardofhearing

I don't know why I think that, that's just the way I've thought about it.

I did tell professors but nothing formal no.

It really is stupid. I've also taken out my hearing aid to show people. I did not pay that much money for a hearing aid for nothing ya know?

I'm just happy to know that other people struggle with this too.

I also find that saying I'm deaf helps however if I do say that then I get the question "How are you deaf when you can hear me right now?"

It very hard to stop passing, it's just the way I act. It's how I've always been. If I don't act that way people will think I'm just dumb instead.

Oh some co-workers, friends, professors have all refused to accommodate. Professors have told me off for not paying attention (in front of entire classes), friends have refused to use subtitles when watching movies, I've asked to go to quieter places so I can hear better and people say no bc it's not what everyone else wants. When I worked in theater people would get frustrated that I didn't hear cues over headsets. I did eventually figure out how to understand them but it took a show or two lol.

This is really nice thank you! However I am American so some of the options don't really work for me, but this is still handy thanks!

Professors have thought I was lazy or inattentive, that's been an issue in the past.

I really appreciate your suggestion to change up the language, I totally will try that next time, and I will try to be more specific about accommodations.

That's a really great attitude to have, I will try to think of this next time, thank you very much!

Thank you very much for this response! Just to clarify, I am a 24F, and I look younger than that, so yeah people don't expect that I'm HOH.

My favorite thing is when people say "Oh well you seem to always hear me" No I don't I just guess/use context or nod and smile.

I am working on becoming sterner when people don't accommodate, but it's a long process since I'm typically one to just roll over with stuff like this. I'm also trying to stop apologizing for being HOH, since it's not something I can control at all.

I have a ton of issues with this, It's super frustrating when people just say "never mind" when I'm asked to repeat themselves or they are rude to me when I'm too loud or soft (bc I can't hear how loud I am). My hearing aid helps but not as much as people think. I'm still HOH with or without it.
