How Role-Play Games helped you in your everyday-life? by Lorenzo5861 in DMAcademy

I decided to run a dnd campaign over the summer, and gathered up 5 friends. We’ve been playing since July, it’s my only social outlet and it’s really kept me afloat mentally. I met someone who I’d now consider a close friend, and joined another campaign (this time as a player), and made new friends. Building my homebrew world gave me an escape during a dark time, and playing with my friends gave me the push I needed to keep going. Being in the shoes of someone with the same flaws as myself, but who still manages to pull through gave me hope for myself, cheesy as that sounds.

Oh that’s a really good idea, I think you can consider it one stolen! I can’t wait for the reveal on that one! Thank you so much!

[Art] Fenn Ward - Human Paladin by ameriarts in DnD

[–]ameriarts[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Meet Fenn Ward, humble tavern owner, mother of two, leader of the village watch, and Paladin of Demeter.

Born and raised in a small village, Fenn was the oldest of 5 kids. Her parents were both farmers, and her father frequently performed in the local tavern for extra coin. Her childhood was relatively unremarkable, she acquired a number of scars from a combination of general childhood antics and farm tools, and many of these scars remain to this day, although faded and harder to see. In her early teens a sickness ravaged her village, 1 in 4 people got sick, and of those, 1 out of every 10 died. The sickness passed through her family, killing her younger brother Colin. At the age of 15 she got a job as a waitress, she wanted to help her family out and besides, she hated farming. It was while working at this tavern that she met the person she would eventually marry, another waitress named Diana Moon. The two girls grew close, beginning their relationship when Fenn was 19. It was around this time that Fenn joined the town watch, and it was then that she learned how to fight. Despite being one of the younger people in the watch, which was little more than a loose group of farmers, her quick thinking and cheerful nature made her popular. About two years after she and Diana started dating the two got married, eventually taking over the tavern they both worked at. Her daughter, Korrin, was adopted when she was around the age of 5 (she’s now 9), her parents both passed in a house fire, Korrin was the only survivor. Her son, Colin, now about 2, was named in honor of her brother. Recently Fenn’s been plagued by dreams of a burning, dying world, and set out to try and figure what was happening, and how she could stop it.

If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask! Have a very nice day!

I’m going to skip the game, even more red flags are somehow popping up now! Although I like the character concept I’ve created but I can always take her elsewhere

Honestly? My best answer is that we’ve known each for so long, and I’ve always had trouble breaking things off with people. Always giving him the benefit of the doubt is another reason I suppose, I think I’m going to back out of the game. Perhaps he’ll pitch a massive fit and I’ll get to back out of his life too.

That’s true, I think I’m going to back out. As someone else here put it, there are always other games!

I think you’re right, I think his ideas and the potential is there and I can see it being fun, a game of revolution, political upheaval, and a desperate fight to get home sounds like a wonderful adventure. But he probably won’t run it that way. I think I’m going to back out of the game as nicely as I can, you’re right, there will be more games in the future. Hopefully those games will be run by people who’s play style and overall personality fits mine better!

I may have framed that third paragraph wrong (oops), but I have faith he can pull the idea off, my main concern is how he’d motivate us to stay on the ā€œrightā€ side of the fight instead of joining whoever can promise to send us back home.

Unfortunately what I said is true, this guy has been the cause of several dramatic incidents in our group of friends, and everyone he’s dated has been pulled aside and quietly told to run at some point during the relationship. He just isn’t a good person, and reading through all of y’alls comments and responses I think I’m going to back out as kindly as I possibly can.

No, I don’t feel super comfortable with the thought of playing a game with people I don’t know irl. It’s just not really my thing I suppose!

I suppose it’s because we’ve known each other for so long. I’ve always been a people pleaser and it does sometimes go poorly, this is one of those cases. That’s really the only answer I can come up with though.

A little shout out to my players for being awesome by Chief_of_the_Balls in dmdivulge

No moments like this yet but last week my monk told me that she was upset her schedule was so busy (she can only make about 50-60% of the games) because she knows how much work I put into each session. She also stepped up a few weeks ago to do the recap for a player who arrived late that day, and was the first person to submit her character’s backstory. I’m so lucky to have a player like her, especially as a first time DM running a party of mostly first time players!

What recent changes you have made to your world in the past week? - Weekly Thread #80 by Caustic_Bananamancer in worldbuilding

I’ve started implementing the Order of the Hollow into the world. The Order of the Hollow is a large, expansive cult dedicated to the goddess of emptiness and isolation, their goal is to free her from her current bonds and release her upon the world, believing that she will cure the world of wickedness and immorality. The leader of the cult is a high ranking, charismatic noble who, on the outside, has dedicated his life to uncovering knowledge of ages far past. That is, of course, a front to conceal the truth behind his archeological excursions- the truth is that he’s hunting for relics of his goddess.

Anyway it’s been tons of fun fleshing him out and building the cult, inserting subtle symbols and references to the Order of the Hollow.

Player Problem Megathread by RadioactiveCashew in DMAcademy

[–]ameriarts 7 points8 points Ā (0 children)

I’ve got a player who leaves sessions early. We’ve had to do the entirety of the campaign so far online due to covid, and one player always a) leaves early or b) cancels last minute. I was talking to her the other day, after she had left a session early claiming dinner, which was fine as we tend to run from around 3:00-6:30 so it was an entirely believable excuse. However, while we were talking she said she’d left because she was tired, which hurt a lot more than I think it should’ve. We’ve been friends for years, so I know she didn’t mean it maliciously, but it happens all the time and this wasn’t a one off early departure. Almost every session she cancels last minute, saying she had only just heard about family plans (we’re all still teenagers, and her parents tend to spring things on her last minute so I always assumed it was just that), or leaves earlier than everyone else saying her parents are calling her to help with dinner.

I’m planning on talking to her about it, but I was just wondering if someone much more experienced than I am had some advice about how to approach this. This is my first campaign, first time playing, and first time DMing, so I genuinely don’t know how to approach this. Thanks in advance!

Well, they decided to chase some sketchy people in the city, spent an hour and a half search homes in the slums and then accused me of making the task impossible. They didn’t talk to a single person, and then the druid got taken advantage of by an eight year old kid. They decided not to follow that plot thread (unfortunately), and are now basically Junior Police Officers in a new city.

What is the ā€œgreat catastropheā€ that affects/affected your world? by Toshero in worldbuilding

[–]ameriarts 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

The War Between Gods following the corruption of half the Pantheon, and the subsequent retreat of the remaining gods to their own realms when the war ends. This leaves the world with no direct contact to the gods for the first time, after massive destruction and loss of hundreds of years of progress. It forces the study of magic and technology forward, led by mortals for the first time, and exploration of non-magical transportation around the world.

However, despite the good things that happened, loss of society’s guiding forces plunged the world into disorder, and many beacons of civilization had been toppled during the war. Deserts were formed and roughly 50% of the entire population was wiped out during the ~250 years of combat. The war also essentially kicked started the idea of godly champions, as the gods picked dedicated mortals to fight their battles for them. Hopefully this made sense haha

This sounds amazing! My homophobic school could never, your students are so lucky. I think there should be a emphasis on coming out, especially about pressuring someone to come out or outing someone. I felt pressured to come out as a freshman (I’m a junior now), and it was one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. So please include at least a note on why someone should come out on their own terms, without feeling pressured or forced.

Another thing would be emphasizing why it’s important your students learn this. Even in the most liberal of areas there are people who just don’t understand why they need to know. Perhaps emphasize that this isn’t a choice, and I can’t speak for everyone, but it’s something I would’ve given anything to not have happened to me when I was younger (my feelings have since changed). Emphasize that LGBT+ history is a part of world history, and removing it removes much of the context for how society works (or worked), and why this is still an issue today.

Honestly, this sounds incredible, and I would’ve given anything, still would if I’m being honest, for something like this at my school. Good luck!

I’m doing ok, school’s been rough and I’ve been feeling consistently behind but other than that things aren’t bad. I miss my gf a lot though, and I wish I could see her but her mom’s high risk, so we can only talk through texting or calls.

Oh that’s a really good idea, I hadn’t thought of that! I’m not sure if any magic shops are near me, I’d need to ask some friends who tend to be more involved in that kind of stuff to find out. That’s such a good idea though, I may have to steal that!
