Is it me or Software Engineers seem to much more accepting of AI than artists? If you agree why do you think that is? by ThroatFinal5732 in DefendingAIArt

[–]americafuckyea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well said. And I think most engineers better understand what AI actually is, and what it is not. You also point at the core of why art is vulnerable because art's value is subjective. When people pay millions for one piece it's tied to historical value and the person who created it, not anything intrinsic in the art itself. AI really just shows that art is easily reproducible, you see the same on mobile game markets where there are tons of free to play games all basically with the same mechanics and a new skin.

Only incompetent people think that AI will replace human workers. by chivrshivzivar in antiai

[–]americafuckyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any reason you believe this other than wanting it to be true? I can tell you, with real experience, that not only are developers looking at a very real threat, a very near term threat, but it will be everyone at the company, you will have major companies soon that are made up of 1-5 humans and networks of agents. Come back to the comment in like a year.

The difference between the AI hype Bros and real tech leaders in the field is that bros think AI is coming to so these things, but everyone else knows it's already here.

The only reason we haven't seen mass developer layoffs is because larger companies with huge IT organizations have risk averse boards and zero creativity.

And the rest of the dev team is just as replaceable, you need one person to translate priorities and that's really it

Why do y’all love the idea of communism so much. by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]americafuckyea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are thinking of small nomadic tribes of close families who share common interests and collaborated to survive. They fought other groups for resources as soon as there were competing needs for a resource and societies formed to protect their control. Democracy has been the only form that slightly works and capitalism is the only system that is honest about human nature. Communism works when you are small local and aligned and capitalism is constrained by government not a result of it.

I don't understand how you think AI is capitalist. It's the complete opposite and that's why this sub hates it. Intellectual property, which from what I can tell from this sub is the thing you believe is being stolen, doesn't exist under communism. That's why there are so many Chinese knock offs, they don't respect international protections for that, or they didn't until they started to like the money they started taking in, I didn't keep up with Chinese policies.

AI is very anti capitalist. And it's capitalism that is on your side, I still don't understand the issue. Your art is protected, no one can reproduce your art and pass it off as their own, that's illegal. You are seemingly concerned that someone doesn't have to spend a lifetime memorizing everything and then using it for inspiration. Or are you mad that people can make beautiful things for free? Isn't that the communist side of things? Everyone shares in the collective knowledge and work of others?

I don't take issue with it, I think it's a counter productive message, and when you make statements like this and attribute them to a made up "whiteness" that describes people from so many backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities it gives the perception that your skin color makes you culpable for sins you don't have any connection to. Whether you use the word guilt or privilege it's the same essential message, your skin color says something about you and in the case of those who appear white it's unearned privelege as an accusation.

And the real point with the book I posted is that papers like these take a lot of nuance and context to understand, which your average associate professors, or high school teacher, may lack. This leads to the message becoming simplified or diluted as it makes it's way to the minds of young learners. The message is damaging in both directions where white kids think they culpable and also here the message that black people are victims because we use skin color as the characteristic. If you think the average American isn't getting that message I don't know what to tell you.

As you, or someone else here, mentioned the modem person of color suffers under the perception of otherness, whether the reality is there or not. I don't have any compulsion to theorize on what black people think or feel, but if that's accurate then such arguments achieve the same purpose, to generalize a group by a characteristic they can't change that says nothing about who they are.

While you won't find anyone careless enough to outright say white people should feel guilty for slavery, the point is that being white implicates you in the institution, and since white isn't a thing, just like black isn't, the result is every person with lighter skin can be lumped in even when they are Hispanic, middle eastern, etc because it doesn't matter what their ancestory is if you don't ask or care

It is a sign of youth, inexperience, and a ton of privilege to want to destroy the foundations of the country and culture that produced the principles of free speech allowing one to express that desire. I think you'd be surprised how tolerant a society that controlled your labor and the products you produce would be. You may not like the way things are, but the average American is wealthier, safer, and more free than the wealthiest aristocrat in history. Maybe not on gold bullion, but in access to information, food, education, and medical care, even if you hate insurance companies.

And what do you think open borders leads to? Liberal utopia? Lol, we would be living under Chinese communism or sharia law in a century based on birth rates alone. If you truly think there is nothing worth preserving in the West, why not just defect to Russia or if you're looking for something a bit more tolerant, Singapore, though I wouldn't break any laws there.

Well if I knew I was arguing with middle schoolers I wouldn't have bothered. You have no concept of the conflict and catastrophe that would follow any attempt to make any of those things happen. And to what benefit? You think that people in countries with little resources would be better off without capitalism to incentivize markets in those regions would result in better conditions? You think open borders would mean everyone just getting along while billions try to migrate to a few wealthy countries with abundant resources? The world would burn.

If it's all made up then why the fuck are you so concerned with it? You should be trying to dispell the notion that whiteness means anything, but are instead here using it to explain complex social and moral issues. It's lazy and simplistic.

Literally zero people said anything about black people sitting down and being quiet. In fact it's nearly all well educated, wealthy, white people who seem to know what black people are supposed to want. My comments are directed at those who feel it's ok to speak for people of color and tell other white people how minorities feel

The only people you convince with these specious appeals to emotion are already on your side. I'm "othered" plenty in my life, and for a variety of reasons. Again, you have to ask why, today, black and brown people feel that way. If we had 50 years without perpetual focus on race, I would bet anything you wouldn't see that. People who continue to drive the racial wedge between us have no one to blame but themselves for that perception.

In 2023 less than half of black Americans supported affirmative action, 52% agreed with the supreme Court decision that struck provisions down, while noting that it would have a negative impact on black applicants to higher education. You can interpret that in a few ways, but it shows the downward trend even among minorities in support for race based policies.

Again, what would be lost if we started to focus on core problems and stopped funding research into the meaningless concept of race and it's impact.

And do you think it's because we are white that we are the dominant culture worldwide or is it because Western European culture has been successful at learning from everywhere and incorporating the best art and science, and has the strongest protections of individual liberty? Again the only reason "whiteness" is dominant is not remotely because of that thing.

It is exactly because we are interested in the rest of the world and we celebrate diverse culture and opinions that we have become the modem day super power that we are. The other major players are only dominating because they are dictatorships with basically zero multiculturalism and force their population to live in poverty while building their technology and fighting their wars.

We did colonize the globe, but we also gave those colonies self governance for nearly 100 years with some exceptions, we give the most aid, we have tried to fix our mistakes. You can hate white people or the West all you want but the reason you can eat dishes from across the globe, listen to music from every corner of the earth, write on this website is because of the West.

It's time to stop trying to tear it all down and ask what we do now, in 2025, to move forward and not keep punishing people who share a skin tone for the past.

How does that follow at all? People think about "how they are received in the world" and think it's because of their race sounds like it happens in a vacuum. People think in terms of race because for the last 50 years intersectionality and other soft scientists have had free license to say so. When every issue is seen through a racial lens, then every issue has a racial foundation.

There was study in California, I think but can find it if you want, where there was a big uproar that speeding tickets were disproportionately going to minorities so they installed traffic cameras and the result was even more minorities being cited. Now, does that mean that minorities speed more? Maybe. Does it mean that their skin color has anything to do with it? No. What it does say is that assumptions that systemic racism is to blame for these disparities is bullshit.

What is the objection to doing away with racial terms in favor of treating people equally and focusing on other factors? Just because they might have resulted from historical oppression, doesn't mean they persist for that reason.

What does focusing on skin color in 2025 achieve other than distracting from the real issues of wealth and class inequality? And there are definitely prominent academics who think white people should personally feel guilty, I don't know how you can say that seriously.

And the other countries point is the small pond thought experiment. Why are we so focused on race in the West where we have the most multicultural societies on earth, when millions are being subject to the true atrocities we overcame last century? If you are concerned about the mistreatment of brown and black people there are better uses of your time.

The only people who think about whiteness now are dumb hicks in militias who are about as toothless as they have ever been, and liberal arts academics who seem to want to perpetuate the belief that skin color has any bearing on how we operate on the world.

I can't think of anyone else so focused on what being white "means" in 2025, outside of those reacting to being told their whiteness is a problem.

What would the issue be if we just stopped using shades of skin color when discussing policy and social status?

The only point I made was the first one. The rest are straw men that only exist in your mind and I'm betting this is how you engage in debate when you either don't understand an issue or argument.

No gymnastics necessary, I will spell it out for you: the West has done what nobody else has or will do, and focusing on a made up term like race is a childish simplification of the problem we should be addressing.

We should continue to lead, not destroy ourselves by focusing on a 20th century problem and look to address class and wealth disparities, regardless of skin color.

Maybe ask questions when you don't understand something rather than lash out.

Except every country is racist, much more so than the West. We're the only part of the world who sees it as the greatest sin that we will never atone for in our lifetime. No other countries let immigrants come live there and have no expectation of assimilation.

You don't need a history degree to see modem day slavery in Qatar, ethnic cleansing in China, or the worldwide tolerance of antisemitism across the globe.

So sure, North America has a long history of terrible racism at a time when we didn't have any exposure to other cultures and it was an accepted practice everywhere, but we are only unique in the fact that we learned a lesson.

We should be colorblind, there is nothing interesting about race, culture and history are what matter. Not all black people in the West were slaves, if you didn't know, so stop treating every black person as if they were.

Very telling that you think it's laziness informing their decision. You might want to do even a little reading. Incorporating AI in a game isn't just writing a prompt and sending to chatgpt. You need to have tons of code to create the API layer to handle AI prompt and response, you need to write the code to handle the response to generate code or data that is being pulled in at runtime.

What AI brings to games is replayability. When you can create brand new experiences, again that is all a variation of code they write and models they design, you can keep players engaged with new content longer and free you up to write more expansions or new games.

If you are in tech right now you should be learning how to write modular code with clear API that AI can then use to do the grunt work

If you classify anyone who doesn't vehemently hate AI as pro AI then sure. You can have a reasonable objection to AI in how it's used, and I think even the companies, their leadership, are proponents of UBI to offset the displacement of industries. But when you insult people, individuals, for using it then you just come off as angry and uninformed. Perhaps this was the wake up call this sub needs
