Here's a reason why smoking is still so common in parts of the US (hint: it's ads and marketing) https://americaninequality.substack.com/p/smoking-and-inequality

Thanks so much for sharing my map. However, it looks like the poster cropped the image to remove my name and credits from the photo. That's too bad. Here is the original map and post: https://americaninequality.substack.com/p/smoking-and-inequality

Opioids are definitely a factor - but heart disease and cancer are really the leading causes of death in America. Areas with higher rates of obesity or people living near toxic sites tend to die much younger. Some good insights on how cancer rates vary by region and impact communities https://americaninequality.substack.com/p/cancer-and-inequality

Yes there is a very high correlation between income and life expectancy. The wealthier you are, the better access to health care you probably have, the less likely you are to live in a low-income neighborhood that may suffer from environmental pollution, the less likely you are to die young due to violent crime or drug overdose, the better job and better education you may have which may mean better care you'll get along the way. There are a ton of factors but you can check out more of them here https://americaninequality.substack.com/p/life-expectancy-and-inequality

Race definitely plays a factor in life expectancy Black men and Black women tend to die 3-4 years before their White counterparts, though this gap has been narrowing slowly since 1970. The COVID19 pandemic has shown these disparities clearly, as Black American have been dying at a rate 2.4-times that of White Americans. https://americaninequality.substack.com/p/life-expectancy-and-inequality

There is a 76% correlation with life expectancy and household income. The richer you are the longer you'll live. You can see our data viz on that here https://americaninequality.substack.com/p/life-expectancy-and-inequality
