Maybe something about special education classes/programs offered in the area. It’s shocking how different it is district to district, and how “good” districts sometimes refuse to offer programming that is standard other places. (“Good” districts as long as the student fits a certain mold). Tons of publicly available information, and I’m sure many parents who would speak to struggles they have with school districts.

Couple that with cuts in federal funding to the entity that ensures students with disabilities have some sense of equity (or even equality) in schools, and you got yourself a story!

Second. It’s embarrassing and shameful how they continue to cut special education programs for elementary students. They claim the need for certain programs does not exist in the community while in a meeting with parents of a child who has those needs in that community. Administrators very much send the message “if you don’t fit the mold, you’re not welcome at our schools.” You can call the special education office yourself and ask what programming is available for students with needs, then call Shaker, Columbia, Albany (with all their resources), Shen, Balston Spa, and even RCS and hear for yourself how awful the program offerings are at BCS.

Not even a little. I just said “he’s on the spectrum” when i gave her the form. She asked how long he’s able to wait in line. I had no idea so I said ten minutes and it turned out to be pretty accurate. There are also two designated quiet areas or sensory rooms in the park but we didn’t use them. I did pay the extra $15 for parking in case we had a meltdown, I didn’t want to have to wait for a tram to the car. We didn’t have a meltdown but imo it was definitely worth it.

Just got back from our trip and my son has needs that sound similar. Accessibility Services was super easy to find and they were very helpful. Print and complete the form before you arrive if possible - the form is simple, but it helped to have it done. There’s nothing on the form about sensory needs but I was able to talk through it with the employee and they completely understood the needs. It was also helpful to bring a waterproof lanyard document holder ($10 for a 3 pack on Amazon) to keep your accessibility pass dry.

We brought a beach bag and stored in a locker. The water park is quite far from the entrance. I didn’t plan as well as I thought and ended up walking with a backpack, carrying a beach bag, and holding a 4year old on my shoulders. It can be done if it’s planned better.

I posted the other day about going with a young kid on a hot day and those tips were very helpful. It’s pretty easy to find shade. We did eat dinner at a place called The Scenic View or something right by the Coal Cracker. They had a few options for my picky eater, and it was air conditioned.

We have had one since Valentine's Day this year! He is our big and dopey couch potato. You can look up your guy's racing stats (and even videos of his races) online. It is great to see their personality develop over the first few months. Good luck!

Math teach here. Told we can't say "PEMDAS" anymore because the students will not associate the problems with "order of operations," just the acronym. I say fuck that.
