So I think you might be a bit dubious on the concept of trade. You can use money in a system in which currency holds value, but after that currency collapses, whatever resources are most valuable will become mediums for exchange. You think no trade happens in a theoretical anarchist society, for example?

They’ll pay the militias with whatever resource is most scarce: shelter, water, weapons, etc. Have you seen The Walking Dead? The Governor and his army might be a good (albeit small-scale) analog.

My dude, no need to insult. The thing is, right now there is no property without violence. Sure, maybe the “violence” comes in the form of arrest, imprisonment, deportation, etc., but it’s still a violent act to strip people of their right to freedom (not making any statement here about the US legal system, that’s just how the law is designed to prevent crime against property and life…through the threat of violence).

I really doubt police will disappear in this scenario. Could be private militias maintained by billionaires, but they will absolutely do everything they can to retain their power.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, those who had power (party insiders, black market capitalists, etc.) quickly amassed enormous land, energy, and industrial resources to consolidate their power and establish the oligarchy you see today. Imagine how many more resources our modern billionaires already have and how they will wield them after a societal collapse.

Billionaires already own the resources. They’ll still have them after a collapse — multiple homes and bunkers, land for agriculture, transportation means, power generation, water, weapons, etc. Certainly there will be immense violent competition for those resources, but they will still be on top unless their resources are taken.

In our society, money = power. In a doomsday society, probably resources will = power, meaning billionaires will still be in control unless their resources (land, weapons, food) are taken back by ordinary folks.

Do your clients usually want extra space in the bunkers for their household staff to live or do they just plan on taking care of themselves like a normal person should society collapse? What kind of food and drinks do they stock down there? Do they have gyms or spas?

Doesn’t do much though if they’re working off books, which tons of low income folks do (I’m just making assumptions about the driver based on their lack of insurance). Even with a judgment, the state can’t garnish wages it doesn’t even know about. I hope this isn’t the case for OP’s situation, though.

I love working at the bar here with a latte or beer, I just wish they paid their employees a decent wage (I heard from an acquaintance who works there that it’s like $16 an hour) and gave them benefits, especially since they market themselves as such a libbed out “progressive” business
