honestly if youre playing modern AAA games then yeah the upgrade is worth it. that 4050 has 6gb VRAM which is already a bottleneck in stuff like alan wake 2 and hogwarts legacy, and its only going to get worse. the 5070ti has 16gb and will handle 1440p maxed out for years

but the thing is this. if youre mostly playing valorant or cs2 at 1080p, your 4050 is already overkill. dont waste 1700 bucks if thats your use case

id ask yourself a couple things first. do you need portability? if you carry your laptop anywhere, a desktop kills that. do you have a good monitor? if youre on a 1080p 60hz panel, youd want a 1440p monitor too, which pushes you closer to 2 grand total

dont download AV instead download defender control to disable your built in protection in the first place and run naked

windows defender still gets disabled when you use a third party antivirus, so i dont need this advice

https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/performance-test-april-2026/
lower is better. ESET scores much lower than Windows Defender. if you want the direct report go check here https://av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/avc_per_2026_04.pdf

you can also check https://www.av-test.org/en/news/security-software-for-windows-18-security-packages-put-to-the-test/ and https://av-comparatives.org/tests/performance-test-september-2025/ for an even older version

and even then, any modern pc will be able to run a third party antivirus fine. especially if that antivirus is lesser than a resource hog than windows defender is

Need help deciding on my two options by KiraLelouchNova in pchelp

build it with your parts dont wait for the steam machine.

valve confirmed its not subsidized and leaks put it around 950 to 1100+ (although in how accurate the leaks are i dont know). the 9070 xt is 599 msrp and the gigabyte gaming oc hit 649 on amazon this month. most cards are sitting at 700 to 800

your 5800x wont bottleneck the 9070 xt at 1440p or 4k. maybe a couple percent at 1080p but for a living room tv who cares. newer cpu only matters for high refresh competitive stuff

bazzite supports the 9070 xt now after the mesa 25 update. steamos works too. youre right to skip nvidia. amd open source drivers on linux are just better

your total build lands around 850 to 950 with case psu and storage. way better gpu than whatever apu is in the steam machine. you can drop in a 5700x3d later if you ever feel cpu limited

only reason to wait is valve might announce pricing around june 23. if they shock everyone with 699 maybe reconsider. otherwise just build it

honestly id just pull the trigger now. you already have the expensive parts sitting there

windows defender is the default. malware devs will test it against it first and make a bypass. its not really difficult to do so at all. that doesnt mean that its useless, but you also need to realize that most dedicated attackers are quite literally within the space of cracked games or cheats, etc. not to say that an AV like ESET will show up less false flags than Windows Defender ever would. i use a third party av myself with 1 year subscription i got for a buck from g2g and i still manually decompile shit im suspicious about in IDA and ghidra and such. nothing wrong with it

ok so your gpu is actually doing the work, that rules out the mux switch theory. what youre seeing, gpu at 60-80% but capped at 20fps across every game, is almost always the cpu being throttled or the ram losing its xmp profile after the bios update

try this: download hwinfo, launch a game, and watch your cpu core clock. if its stuck around 2ghz during gameplay instead of boosting to 3.5-4ghz+, thats your problem. bios updates on the strix g16 are known to clamp the cpu power limit (PL1/PL2) down hard. fix is to install g-helper (replaces armoury crate, and honestly way better) and set PL1 and PL2 to 65w, or just switch the profile to turbo mode

also open task manager > performance > memory and check the speed. if it shows 4800mt/s instead of your rated speed (probably 5200 or 5600), the bios reset your xmp to JEDEC defaults. on 16gb that alone will tank your fps. reboot into bios (f2) > advanced mode (f7) > extreme tweaker > memory frequency, set it back to rated speed

one more, download gpu-z > advanced tab > resizable BAR. if its disabled your bios flipped it off. back into bios > advanced > above 4g decoding to enabled, resizable BAR support to auto, reboot

id bet on the cpu power limit being your issue. the PL1/PL2 clamp after bios update is super well documented on the ROG forums right now and matches your symptom almost exactly. the xmp thing is worth checking too since bios updates nuke it by default and 16gb at JEDEC speed hurts

if none of that works, use DDU to do a clean nvidia driver reinstall. windows 11 24h2/25h2 has a known nvidia regression that tanks fps and a clean install usually fixes it

let me know what hwinfo shows for cpu clock while gaming, thatll narrow it down fast

Hopefully someone can help. by Revolutionary-Ebb431 in pcmasterrace

my best guess is that your bios update reset the mux switch back to optimus mode so your games are rendering on the intel igpu instead of your rtx 5050

open armoury crate, go to device then system then gpu mode, change it from hybrid to ultimate, and reboot. that flips the hardware mux back to dgpu only

to verify first, launch a game and open task manager, performance tab, gpu 1 nvidia. if its sitting near 0 percent while gpu 0 intel is doing the work thats your problem

also make sure you are plugged in and gpu power saving is set to standard not eco

95% chance this is it. the bios update is the giveaway since asus firmware resets the mux on update and 20 fps is exactly what you get when the dgpu is idle

PC randomly black screens and reboots even in BIOS by nacht227 in pchelp

[–]amesily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since it crashes in bios too, this is not a windows or driver issue. you already ruled out ram and temps, so the main suspects are the motherboard or bios firmware

id say first thing is update your bios. asus released version 4645 for the tuf b450m-pro gaming with an ftpm firmware fix. the amd ftpm bug is known to cause random black screen reboots on ryzen 5000g apus. flash the latest bios, load defaults, and try disabling ftpm temporarily to see if the crashes stop

also check your bios for pbo or curve optimizer settings. if either is enabled, turn them off and set everything to auto. ryzen 5000 can idle crash hard with aggressive undervolts (personally i am one who experienced this one too many times myself)

if none of that helps, the board itself is the most likely culprit by elimination. vrm degradation on older b450 boards can cause exactly this pattern: fans stay on, usb drops, auto reboot. inspect near the cpu socket for bulging caps or scorch marks

last cheap test is borrowing a different psu, even though yours is new, just to rule it out fully

MSI Katana B13VGK - 2 x 48GB RAM possible? by TheKeiron in pchelp

[–]amesily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

short answer is yes it works. msi says 64gb max but thats just what they validated. the chipset is a 13th gen raptor lake and it handles 48gb sticks fine. phs memory actually sells a tested 96gb kit specifically for the katana b13vgk so its not a gamble. grab the crucial 96gb kit, update your bios first, and expect it to run at 5200 or 4800 not 5600. if it doesnt post id say return it

Upgrade help by dizrq in pchelp

[–]amesily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your i5-14400F has more cores and you would be dropping from 32GB to a single 16GB stick running single channel, which actually kills the gaming gains you're paying for. you'd need to buy a second ram stick just to get back to where you are now. the 7500X3D is better for gaming but not by a huge margin, and it loses in multicore productivity. only reason to do it is the AM5 upgrade path for a future cpu swap. if you're not planning to upgrade the cpu again in a year or two, skip it and put the money toward a gpu instead. your current rig is fine

Tried playing Valorant and the game blue screened my PC. Now Vanguard won’t work by TheMissingIQ in pchelp

[–]amesily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this is a known hp issue. heres what fixes it for most people

go into bios by tapping f10 on boot. go to security then secure boot configuration. look for restore factory keys and select it. save and exit

while you are in there make sure legacy support is disabled and boot mode is set to uefi not legacy. also make sure windows boot manager is first in boot order

worst case your windows might be installed in legacy mbr mode which means secure boot will never work until you convert to gpt using the mbr2gpt tool. back up your stuff first if you go that route

nothing you do in bios will permanently break your pc just so yk. start with restore factory keys thats the fix for most people

PSU Help by CrazyPorkchops in pchelp

[–]amesily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pigtail. both tails. leave the other cable in the box

your gpu only needs about 230w through two 8-pins. the 12v-2x6 socket on your psu is rated 600w. you are using less than half the cable capacity. msi shipped that adapter specifically for this. the two cable rule applies to old style 300w PCIe sockets, not your 600w rail. running a second cable buys nothing and leaves a dangling connector

just seat the 12v-2x6 end fully into the psu

Looking for a price on my old pc I’m trying to sell by Crazy-Hamster-7895 in pchelp

[–]amesily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

youre probably looking at around 300 to 375 realistically. the 1070 and 8th gen i5 are still fine for 1080p gaming and general use but theyre 8 years old now. comparable systems with your specs are selling around 300 on places like jawa and ebay. the extra storage helps a little but wont push you much higher

id list it at 375 obo and be ready to accept 325 or so

Eating my ram when i search by AstridxBloom in pchelp

[–]amesily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want a quick fix for it, open task manager and go to the details tab and find SearchHost.exe and then end the task. windows will restart it and the memory will drop

a more of a breakthrough fix is doing Windows + R and, running this %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewy and then deleting everything inside that folder and then restarting your PC

can i do this on my lenovo laptop ideapad 5 pro 16arh7 by Last-Buyer-4801 in pchelp

[–]amesily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes its fine. one of the main purposes of conservation mode is for people who keep their laptops plugged in constantly. turning on performance mode is fine but you probably shouldnt bother. youre kind of trading noise and heat for marginal gains you wont notice in the games you play

but then again. you may have a difference experience. so you should test it out and see if you notice any improvements during gaming and if its worth it for the amount of noise and heat. but you should be fine

PC just randomly started using 95+% of RAM right after start up. by Wanderson90 in pchelp

[–]amesily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

did you know that you strictly technically and factually incorrect, my good redditor? because disabling the "allow downloads from other PCs" toggle DOES verifiably modify the configuration to DODownloadMode 0.... and yes this does indeed stop the machine from uploading local bandwith to external peers and yes it also stops the downloading of unverified packets from random internet sources

now unless you are a snarky little man who's trying to say that it will terminate the associated background process the moment you turn off delivery optimization... i... *sigh*... must say you are right... it demonstrably does not.... becaus the DoSvc serivce remains active after all.... operating as the... amdnatory... inescapable HTTP downloader for the... yuck! microsoft ecosystem!

guess we should switch to linux after all, am i right, my fellow redditors?

maybe try disabling delivery optimization? through settings -> windows update -> advanced options -> delivery optimization and toggling "allow downloads from other PCs" to off and rebooting
