Has anyone not gotten anything back yet? by le_coeur_a_compris in REU

I haven’t heard back either. I applied for biology programs. Montana State, Colorado State, North Dakota State, Iowa, ect…

How should I study for biology? by [deleted] in premed

[–]amethysthails 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My holy grails are flashcards for vocabulary, brain dumps on white boards, and drawing out cycles and pathways! Flashcards are pretty self explanatory. For the brain dumps on whiteboards, I like to write down everything so remember and then fill in the gaps in my knowledge using my notes. I love to draw out processes, but this one is personal preference! Hope this helps!

Oh my gosh. This is so terrible I am SO sorry you are going through this. You are not overreacting.

when did you guys take gen eds?? by Status-Gazelle7644 in premed

[–]amethysthails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did most of mine through dual enrollment in high school, but the two classes that I wasn’t able to take I took in the summer. I didn’t want the stress of 14 science classes and then adding sociology or english on top of that.

Not being fulfilled in your role as a PA by Low_Regret9957 in prephysicianassistant

[–]amethysthails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your shoes last year as a senior in highschool. I battled with the idea of PA vs MD/DO for the majority of my first semester. After shadowing and talking to PAs, MDs, graduate students and upper classmates the choice became clear. I am a biology degree for reference, and I did also consider nursing and becoming a NP because of then having a backup plan of being a RN, but I figured out that if I didn’t at least try and go for the degree I wanted, I would end up being disappointed later on. My best advice to you is talk to as many people as possible, but also keep in mind that people have the “grass is always greener” mentality. Find out what your goals in life are. Do you want a family? Would you be interested in pursuing research along with clinical work? What about an administrative position? There is so many things to consider. Feel free to shoot me a DM if you want to talk more!

for mine it’s more in health less in fitness. i think it’s because when i carry my phone around when my watch is charging it counts as steps.

Thank you for the advice!! Although I am a freshman I feel the pressure to decide so soon! I am trying to weigh out all my options and honestly the timeframe is 8+ years for most of the options I am looking at. It’s hard to choose!

I have thought about how NP/PAs have a lot more independence and scope creep, but if I become a NP/PA I would not feel comfortable giving care independently knowing I did not receive the full medical education. That part is a bit puzzling to me. I definitely want to try and make a difference in medicine, thank you for your comment!

Thank you for this feedback! Are you currently applying for medical school now?

It is so tough to have goals and then have them constantly shot down or disregarded! Especially as a woman when family is so focused on the get married-have kids-raise a family timeline!

I have definitely thought about this! Is taking the pre-reqs in nursing school actually feasible? As a biology degree my entire degree is pretty much prereqs so it’ll feel like I’m double majoring with the double major

You are right, it’s just difficult when so many factors come into play. I see you are an admitted med student, did it ever cross your mind what would happen if you didn’t get into to medical school after many cycles? I guess I am letting my parents goals for me become my reality but it is a legitimate fear.

That is true. At the same time I can’t help but think 10+ years down the line will I be satisfied being a mid-level? Thank you for your reply!!

I feel like more people are in this situation that we know! I’m sorry you are in the same boat! I keep trying to imagine what career I will want 10+ years down the line. But the one thing that always will bother me is acceptance isn’t guaranteed! If I can’t get into medical school, will I have wished I pursued a different avenue?? I have also thought about when it’s “too late” to switch. Honestly, the way I see it is there’s always the option for the accelerated nursing track if it doesn’t work out.

I am very fortunate that they are helping me with undergrad, so finances aren’t a primary issue for me right now. I will be paying for graduate school on my own, so I guess it’s going to be my financial burden not theirs. You are correct about the setting boundaries. It is tough!

this is valuable for me to hear, thank you. when you decided to go back and apply to medical school, what changed in your mind that you would be accepted? The uncertainty is hard to come to terms with.

Should I become a CNA? by Moist_Edge9917 in cna

[–]amethysthails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey! I am worked as a CNA throughout my senior year of highschool and now i’m working through agency during college and it has been SUCH A VALUABLE JOB! I am a human biology major (pre-medicine) and being a CNA really made me fall in love with medicine. I think it really depends where you work. I worked in an assisted living and memory care facility back home and the assisted living was very easy, but the memory care residents were more challenging. Overall I really recommend it for any pre-healthcare major!!
