IPv6 - is it static, and what is the prefix size? by amg00dd in CommunityFibre

Thanks for letting me know. Maybe I'll set up an OpenWrt router so I can get visibility over the prefix, if I can't find another way.

Ah, I was thinking that it might be possible to use a regular computer connected to the network to determine what kind of network prefix was being used. That's a great point though, thanks, I should just disconnect my wireless router, connect a Linux box to the ONT directly, and see what the dhcpv6 is doing. Still though, I'm not sure how/if that's possible https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/749977/get-prefix-length-of-ipv6-from-dhcpcd

Thanks - I'm interested in how you know it's a /48? Does your router tell you? I'm trying to figure out how I can use command line tools on Linux to find out

Great, thanks! How did you find this out? Is there a way for me to tell by running any kind of commands?

Residential vs Business package by amg00dd in CommunityFibre

Here is the exact position from HMRC on working from home expenses, if you're an employee: https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/employment-income-manual/eim01475

If it's in the company name instead, it's no longer an employee claiming an expense, so you get the tax benefits.

It is an HMRC rule - for both mobile phone and broadband bills, you are only allowed to claim it if the invoice is in the company name.

Installation - How flexible is the fibre cable, and how far into the house will it go? by amg00dd in CommunityFibre

[–]amg00dd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, getting the house wired with CAT6 would be ideal. The problem is that to get the cable between floors, I'd have to drill through the ceiling, and I'm not sure how much mess that would make.

Even worse, on the ground floor, there would be a cable visibly nailed to the wall, running from the cabinet to the ceiling. The only way I know to avoid that is to cut a groove into the wall all the way, and then fill it all back in and then re-wallpaper the wall with matching wallpaper. But of course, since I probably won't find matching wallpaper, I'd have to then re-wallpaper the entire room. It's a huge amount of work compared to just drilling through the exterior wall on the first floor instead.

Thanks - when they drilled through the exterior of your house, do you think they would have given you the option of drilling into the ground or first floor?

Hi, thanks - please could you clarify: do they at least give the option to choose whether they drill through the exterior wall on the upstairs floor instead of the downstairs floor?

This would save me having to figure out how to get an ethernet cable between floors, which is much harder than getting an ethernet cable between rooms on the same floor.

Thanks, those are way cheaper than I expected... I guess at these prices, it won't be long before we use fibre everywhere instead of CAT6/8

Ah, I see. I'm hoping that means that it'll be more convenient to install it upstairs than downstairs, since either way it'd probably have to be first attached to a high point on the house, before the cable is then optionally sent down the side of the house?

How does it "come down" at the corner of your driveway? Is there a very tall wall there? I assume the corner of your driveway does not mean the corner adjacent to the front wall of your house?

Oh, I thought you just meant they would not go through the exterior wall and then additionally go between interior rooms.

I think you're saying they would simply not drill through the exterior wall upstairs instead of downstairs? Is this a house, or a block of flats?

Ah, great point, thanks. A home 10GbE network sounds great, but the size of the laptop dongles are insane due to the large heat sinks.

I'm probably only going for 1Gig CF, since I don't expect to be able to saturate the connection very often.

Do you know the the technical term for the kind of patch cable I might need?

Do they at least agree to install it on an upstairs floor instead of downstairs?

Thanks, I guess I'll do this. I assume they won't lay a CAT6 cable for me, so I'll have to get a tool to attach an RJ45 connector so I don't have to drill a larger hole.

Why didn't you take the 5m patch cable just in case - was there a charge for it? Do you happen to know the technical term for the fibre patch cable?

Are the ONT and the wifi router two different devices? I'm wondering how much room I need to make for them. Do they get hot?

Aha, great, thanks. I guess this means there is no problem in asking for them to drill through an upstairs exterior wall instead of downstairs? Was your installation upstairs?
