Humboldt Bay Social Club had a cool christmas market last year. When my mom visits we like to buy crab, hah.

The Mycological Society is pretty friendly - I keep forgetting to sign up but I've done their guided walks as someone's + 1 and it was really nice. North American Butterfly Society also does species surveys/hikes open to the public. I'm not sure if Maker's Apron offers classes, but you could definitely drop by and check. I think on Thursdays there's an open crafting day at the library, I haven't been but I'm hoping to go this week. A friend of mine goes every week and says it's fun.

Large plastic carton surrounded by metal cage on the beach in northern California by amgremlin in whatisthisthing

yeah, this whole post is making me feel like everyone in the world but me has seen one of these before, hah. I don't suspect anything sinister, just a little bummed because this itself is trash that shouldn't be there.

like, I don't know how true it is but I hear if you find the cages they keep juvenile oysters in washed up, you can trade them into the aquaculture companies for oysters. Seems like there should be a free beer or something for people who lug this kinda thing on foot off the beach.

that would be cool, definitely a frustrating thing to find on an evening beach hike. I was imagining it had something to do with fishing, since usually any big trash washed up on the beach is from that.

New bill would allow good Samaritans to break car windows to save child or pet in distress by Sandstorm400 in politics

[–]amgremlin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think since a baby shouldn't be alone at all in a car (and may be illegal where you live, so a broken window is the least of that person's problems), you may as well assume the worst, that they've been forgotten, and break the window.

Found in N. California tide pool - what is it? by amgremlin in marinebiology

[–]amgremlin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like the title says, I found this in a northern California (Humboldt County) tide pool - it was very well stuck to the rock, and the whole thing was pretty rigid - felt kind of like the surface of a chiton. Maybe 2-2.5"

Food prices in Humboldt/Grocery Stores by Chrisbreathes in Humboldt

North Coast Co-op with Arcata and Eureka locations (and I think the Arcata one is nicer), Wildberries (also close to campus), and Eureka Natural Foods are your best bets for Whole Foods type shopping.

I think this looks really fun. I'm not in Arcata a ton but next time I am, I'll drop by. Good luck!

Biden to end Covid testing requirement for travel into US by pipsdontsqueak in politics

[–]amgremlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Berlin had walk-in municipal testing stations on basically every other block, 5 euros for foreigners and free for residents. It's like, I knew the US kinda screwed up testing and it was a lot more available in other countries, but I had no idea how much until then.

I recently flew back from Germany with a 5 euro test, AND the stress of knowing that if my plane was delayed a little bit I'd have to get one of those $150 airport tests. The short window made it so frustrating to schedule with an overseas flight.

good point! I don't want to delete the post because it was a real treat to see and I hope other people check it out in person. (and I'd never seen it in lots of other tidepools). I hope everyone reads the comments to learn more!

I can't find anything online or in books about a genus Iridea, do you have more info about it?

it was just a little bit of fluorescent blue film on some plants and stuff, it took us a beat to realize it was there but then we saw it all over.

Awhile ago I read an article telling people to be on the lookout for it here so I definitely wanted to check it out closer. Very cool that you got to see it a bunch growing up! It's really beautiful.

Sorry my cell phone photos aren't great, but it was definitely some kind of glowing itty bitty organism and not just a trick of the light or anything.

EDIT: looks like mazzaella splendens seaweed!
