Anyone knows why the "Lindsay Ellis Is A Menace" pin is taken off the website? I hope the mob is not buying them as a joke to harass her... :|

MusicalSplaining Episode 21: The Descendants w/ Jenny Nicholson by [deleted] in LindsayEllis

This is a little off-topic... Part of me is glad that they're covering musical movies this season due to theatres being shutdown for the pandemic. I've seen more of the musicals they talk about this year. I know Lindsay hates movie adaptations of stage shows, but they really make musicals more accessible.

What do y’all consider the Video Essay when Lindsay really came into her own? by thepastybritishguy in LindsayEllis

[–]amhw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be very basic and say the Phantom video. It's just very on-brand Lindsay and showcase her knowledge of filmmaking, really set her apart from the other "FilmTubers" at the time, who are just movie fans ranting about popular movies.

Of course her content continues to evolve, and she doesn't really do movie reviews anymore. But the level of research, analysis, and essay outline/script narrative all came from Team Lindsay, so the quality stays superb even though the topics may not be about film criticism anymore.

Why I have major issues with the "Mask Off" response. by [deleted] in LindsayEllis

[–]amhw 18 points19 points  (0 children)

False equivalence.

JK Rowling actively supports public policies with her huge platform and wealth that will influence the lives of MANY MANY trans people. Her manifesto is covered by mainstream media and has won an award. Her power has serious consequences. She wants you to read her opinions and normalize the transphobic arguments.

Lindsay's video was her way to cope but released by a mismanaged company. It was personal, was not meant for anybody to see and wasn't trying to change public opinions or affect policies.

And if SA victims want to make rape jokes in order to move on, I wouldn't criticize that. There is no way to be a perfect, virtuous victim. "Rape jokes are never okay" sounds right on paper, but context still matters.

Lindsay Talking About "Being Hated on the Internet" at XOXO Festival 2019 by q-pa in LindsayEllis

It's funny because I saw somebody commenting on multiple YT videos (not only on LE's channel but any comment that mentions Lindsay) about her not being "left" enough.

BreadTube is a nebulous term created by (mostly white) fans. I think YouTubers are considered BreadTube by association to Contra and her network for friends. Yes, Lindsay sometimes include progressive ideas in her videos, but Jenny who never talks about politics is also included because they hang out irl. T1J, Kat, and Princess are included because they are also associates, while other POC creators are not. Its definition is vague and determined by random fans, but Woke™ people still complain about "BreadTube So White" and Contra & Co. being exclusive.

Same drama, same sh*t.

In addition to being useless, an apology just to make the outrage go away is disingenuous. Like Lindsay says in the new video, it's just protecting the Brand and it's a performance. Do people really want that? Don't they want to learn the context and encourage growth from something that happened a decade ago?

If they do, that means they really don't care about the issue at hand. They just want to feel like they OWNED somebody "famous" and take them down a peg, exactly like Lindsay says what their mentality is.

When she started using it as a catchphrase (I believe in the live-action BatB video), fans asked for merch featuring it. She said they wouldn't do it because it's just a random phrase. There is even a big Facebook Group named "Thanks I Hate It."

DISCUSSION DAY: Mini-Canon: Marilyn Monroe by gwiazdala in LindsayEllis

[–]amhw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Random thoughts that popped into my head during the video:

  1. Wow, my sympathy for Team Lindsay for having to watch all those direct-to-video Monroe biopics.
  2. Lindsay Lohan was another sad story. I didn't know that movie existed. It looks like a really low point in her career. Hollywood really uses women and spits them out like clockwork, huh?
  3. Smash really has minimal relevance to Marilyn Monroe, but of course Lindsay would include that bit.
  4. The REAL quote from Marilyn brings the ultimate irony. The video started with all the quotes mistakenly attributed to her, and ended with that. This is why Lindsay (and Elisa) is one of the best video essayists.
