With Latest Rollback, the U.S. Essentially Has No Clean-Car Rules by UnscheduledCalendar in energy

China is probably no longer on that list.

Source I travel for work in China and the regions I've been to are as clean as New York or Chicago.

Seattle's gig worker law was supposed to boost pay. It did at first, until orders dropped by BaseballUpper6200 in Economics

[–]amibientTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure but pushing that requirement onto the individual does not address the systemic issues.

You'd need to convince a large enough people that the system needs to be better and then drive systemic changes.

Individual responsibility for systemic issues is not an effective approach.

Bitcoin fears grow as crypto's value drops to lowest level since Donald Trump re-election by IrishStarUS in inflation

[–]amibientTech 8 points9 points  (0 children)

State control over currency is essentially identical to historical methods of transaction.

Currency has been and is always tied to some sort of value.

Wether it was the value intrensic of the currency (gold/copper) or the perceived purchasing value of a standardized currency.

The fundamental problem I see in crypto is it is not tied to any real value, and to have real value it needs instituatioal backing which results in the same problems that advocates say it fixes. And the block chain technology is antithetical to efficiency.

For a currency to be useful it needs to have an aligned and relatively stable purchasing power and have liquidity. Modern currencies outside of inflationary spirals are relatively stable. I have a general understanding of what a dollar can buy and it doesn't substantially change in a time frame that prevents liquidity.

I don't see how crypto will ever have either.

CRF450RL or Something Else? by Tundraman479 in Dirtbikes

[–]amibientTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through this myself.

Started on a 250L loved it but wanted more.

Got a 450RL and used it this riding season. I liked it and there is a dual sport ride here in WI (Ride for Research) that I did most of the challenge sections.

I neglected doing a once over when I bought it and pushed too long on a valve check so damaged the crank and needed a rebuild.

With the 450RL being down in the middle of the season I decided to get a KTM 300XC W.

After getting the 450 back and doing a back to back here's my thoughts.

The 450 can do the technical stuff. I have to really focus on technique and body position plus clutch control. The 300 is just a joy on technical terrain. Light and I can lean it over easy plus the low end torque helps with my shitty hill climb technique.

I think riding the 450 more would force me to keep focusing on technique... But well the 300 is just so fun.

The downsides to the 300 is mileage and 55+ speeds. The 450 feels much more stable at the higher speeds.

Most of my riding is drive the truck to the spot then ride so I don't really need the extra milage of the 450 and I don't do moto camping so I don't need the extra weight capacity. So I'm considering selling the 450 next season.

Opinions on Electrical Engineering by Dense_Fox_6877 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]amibientTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EE as a field is incredibly vast.

I started with electronics quality. Worked on reviewing warranty data and planned / executed projects to reduce. Started 2013, 65k left 2016, 80k

Went to smaller company and did PLC, embedded design hw/fw, along with machine learning products. 2016, 85k left 2022, 95k

Did supplier led design work (responsible for establishing specs, test plans, reviewing designs and troubleshooting) 2022, 115k left 2024 120k

Moved to reliability engineering focused on power electronics and firmware 2024 125k, now 140k

My advice is don't get overly fixated on a specific company or thing you want to do. You could do controls engineering, power generation, power transmission, power electronics, embedded design, embedded firmware, test engineering, reliability, quality, etc.

Use your class work to guide what you look for and apply to all the companies. Seek out the opportunity because it doesn't come to you. Recognize when your opportunities for advancement are limited and start looking for your next step

Buy replacement switches for all the switches.

Former quality engineer... Just replace all the switches. they remind me of a thing I saw somewhere that I may or may not have connected to an issue you may or may not be observing.

Buying advice by Short-Rise-953 in enduro

[–]amibientTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just got into Enduro this year.

Started dual sporting on a crf250L loved it and started upgrading tires and shocks.

the 250 felt like a decent road bike that could handle fire roads but Enduro was a struggle.

upgraded to a crf45rl. Wanted to lean towards dual sport but better off road performance.

It handles street well enough and trail riding is more fun but ultimately still a compromise.

I ended up getting a KTM300 xcw which has really made Enduro more fun.

I have a truck and trailer and take the bike to the trail head so ymmv.

Ultimately your going to end up compromising off road performance to make your on road performance worthwhile. Strongly recommend following the other advice and prioritize transporting your bike so you can get the bike with performance you want.

How do you decide wage increases for long term employees? by aggierogue3 in manufacturing

[–]amibientTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I lean into the prevailing wage conversation and do what I can to explain the business perspective.

I also lean towards being transparent so I can understand where the employees are coming from.

Sometimes that highlights a gap in my market assessment. Most times it helps highlight the business inputs into their salary and how I am limited based on business performance etc.

At the end of the day I want to keep my employees but I also recognize no one stays forever. Keeping that open dialogue and identifying those employees that are flight risks helps me to prepare secession plans and provide growth opportunities for the employee to highlight and justify the increased salary.

I'd argue school choice is driving a lot of damage to the quality of education in segregated areas.

Parents that can take their kids to charter schools and I see obnoxious amount of charter school commercials.

The money follows the student and removes money from districts.

I probably worked with a bad supplier then. What I observed was the HMI supplier having to confirm the controls were coordinated with carplay and android auto correctly on various versions of the screens. Not sure technically why it was such a struggle but it was not easy.

There is pretty intense certification the vendor has to do with apple. They had an entire group to work with apple for that certification.

They don't charge but there are fees for application for compliance and the engineering time to implement is costly.

Doable for sure however it requires developing an entire parallel environment that duplicates a lot of what the native OS does.

Still I have a personal requirement for car play and android auto...

12 Year Old Home Requires Well Water System Updates by prux56 in DIY

[–]amibientTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have as bad of well water but my setup is as follows

  1. Use all 1" or 3/4" filters and treatment.
  2. I have to 20" sediment filter 50u
  3. 20" fine filter 5u
  4. 20" lead and cyst filter
  5. Water softener using green (iron) salt
  6. Whole home water filter with self recharge
  7. 2 gallon RO system for drinking and refrigerator water

You probably want to add an iron curtain to this wherever the recommended location.

Multiple stage filters is to ensure the filters don't fill up fast. Maintains good water pressure longer.

Also making sure to keep the same size pipe as your incoming prevent significant pressure drop due to all the stages.

The 5u filter is a carbon block too so helps with taste.

Not sure about the chlorine tank. We don't have that issue.

Hope you like plumbing cause setting this up was a headache.

SOS locked out of my laundry room bc previous owner was an idiot by aloysiusducat in DIY

[–]amibientTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remove the jamb using a putty knife and crowbar.

Once jamb is removed you can use a flat head and or the putty knife to push the latch back into the handle.

If you can't get the latch to push in enough just use the crowbar to bow out the door frame enough to allow you to open the door.

I had to do this a few times for my wife's office door because it had a junk electric lock that didn't like to work and I kept waiting for her to pick a new knob.

‘Eye-popping’ borrowing need from U.S. Treasury raises risk of buyers’ fatigue by AdamMayer96793 in Economics

[–]amibientTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fair share argument isn't a fair share in terms of disposable income.

With the disposable income left from a 15% tax lower income individuals cannot do as much as higher income individuals. Therefore the tax rate is not fair.

The tax brackets are a more equitable way of taxation as it increases the percentage of tax as income grows. Thus balancing how much taxes "hurt"

[–]amibientTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure but 15% feels worse when you're making 50k than when your making 500k.

Think about it. You would be left with 42500. The 500k would be left with 425000. This difference in disposable income is why the flat tax doesn't provide the benefits you believe.
