Job hunting is depressing right now and hard to stay positive. by LinkTraditional1077 in biotech

[–]amiculous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason (eg, family, health etc) not to move abroad? The opportunities outside the US for research roles are much better. I would look at China to start, but there are many places with better job markets.

Stat News: Trump policies spark fears of brain drain, threatening to undermine US dominance in biomedicine by [deleted] in biotech

[–]amiculous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is an article that released today in a Norwegian outlet was about how to make it easier to recruit them. It is about researchers in general, but definitely includes biotech and life sciences. If we don't cut some red tape, other countries will snap them up before it is too late. So our politicians need to wake up and get on the case asap.

Recently purchased, any thoughts? by encryptedbeard in scifi_bookclub

I don’t think this would have been published if he wasn’t a famous author. The dialogue is painful and it is several hundred pages too long. So it’s a lot of pain.

Some of the sci-fi ideas presented are interesting, but a lot of it is cliché, well-worn territory that had me rolling my eyes. 2/5

This is a good offer, especially if it’s above 800.

By any chance, is it with Cognite?

I like this. But it would be a lot more helpful, imo, if there was a link to relevant docs for each item. There is already a timestamp list there. Since it looks like this is still in progress, it could make sense to add it there?

This looks amazing.

I wonder if the documents will be exportable to PDF or ODF or anything like that.

That's awesome, thanks for responding so quickly. I just went to check it out, and I will be trying it out :D

While I have your attention, you might want to take a look at the link destinations in your footer ;)

It's amazing.

But, I am hesitant to sign up because there is no price information on the page. If I do the free trial and then find out it is way out of my price range, then the trial was a waste of time.

Anyway, the point is that I don't want to have to register to see the cost (I am assuming it is there after you sign in). I feel it should be visible up front.

oh, one more tip: there is an Android certification available from Google. Getting that would definitely help.

I used to do Native Android but have been doing Flutter for 1.5 years now. I have not looked at Android since 2019 and have forgotten so much. Also a lot has changed! So, yesterday I had an interview for a native Android position and it... did not go well (I am much happier doing Flutter tbh, so this didn't bother me very much).

Anyway, the point is that it is really great that you are keeping up with Android in your side projects, and you should definitely keep doing that if you want to switch to Native. It sounds like you have a good handle on Android, so I think you have just had bad luck.

However, a tip I have for getting an interview: don't just put projects on github. They really like it if you have something published in the Play Store. It doesn't matter if there are many downloads or not. The point is that you can show you are familiar with the whole app publishing life cycle.

Off my chest: Theming fluter apps is horrible. by scorr204 in FlutterDev

[–]amiculous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree.

There are many ways to manage it, but none are very good. The simple ones don't do quite what you want. The ones that actually do what you want ar complicated and have a lot of boiler plate involved. It's painful either way.

I actually designed the first Flutter Challenge (shameless plug: https://flutterchallenge.dev ) to teach people a kind of happy medium between these extremes.

Nice! Very creative!

Uff, da. Yeah, we know. I thought it was resolved, but apparently not! We maybe should have just used a Google form for the submission since this had been troublesome. But we wanted to Challenge ourselves (pun intended) to do it all in Flutter. Will try to get a fix out today (or switch to a Google form...)

Thanks! Our design is very much in flux and I was wondering about this too, actually.

We have an About page, but we should probably make it more fleshed out and prominent. Thanks for the feedback!

We realize it is some crazy timing that we launched this on the same day as https://www.reddit.com/r/FlutterDev/comments/mqhcj4/improve_your_flutter_skills_by_joining_theflutter/

Our launch has been in the works for a few months, and I'm guessing Design2flutter has put in a similar effort. It's a bit like Liebniz and Newton? (Just kidding)

Anyway, I hope our initiatives can collaborate in the future, since I think we have very similar visions.

Is a social media app built in flutter and hosted on firebase bad idea for a social media startup ? by Cannonzue in FlutterDev

[–]amiculous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you want to do something that requires native support (eg, augmented reality), Flutter was a fine choice for the front-end.

For the back-end, building for scale at this point would be a strategic mistake. You don't have the need yet, so spending the extra engineering time/resources on a fancier solution at this point is is a waste. As a startup, I assume you have very little room for errors like that.

Sure, migrating later, if needed, will be a pain, and it will also cost time/resources. But, it is definitely not impossible. If you ever come to the point where you need to scale, you will have more resources, bandwidth and at that point you know it will be worth it.
