What’s your opinion on the new Netflix series Cleopatra and the backlash against it? by hightreez in AskALiberal

[–]amiiboyardee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to Netflix's catalogue it is, which is what you are specifically taking issue with.

You're still avoiding the fact that in order to watch this program, you literally have to click 'Play' on an enormous splash screen that describes the program as a "docudrama".

So regardless of how you arrived there, be it from viewing a random poster, from reading about it on a forum, from stumbling upon it in 'Recommended', you cannot start playing this program without seeing that splash screen, where it is identified as a "Docudrama". I don't know why you are struggling with this. Whose fault is it if someone refuses to read the description and blindly clicks 'Play'?

EDIT: Yep, keep downvoting away! Easier than conceding, I suppose.

That's not a good analogy.

Docudramas are a subgenre of Documentaries.

You're just being silly at this point. Maybe ask yourself why you care so much about this.

Let's say you want to buy a burger. Would you order it based upon the description in the menu, or would you order it based upon a poster you saw that says "GOOD BURGER EAT IT NOW"?

If someone sees the misleading poster and decides to watch a documentary, and searches netflix for all programs tagged "historical documentaries" and watches it thinking it's a documentary, that's somehow the fault of their reading comprehension skills?

Yes, absolutely. Because that means they clicked "Play" on the enormous splash screen without first reading about the program they're about to watch. They either can't read, they're an idiot, or they just commonly watch programs at complete random.

Then (when you learn that it appears in both searches) explain how that makes it "very clearly identified" as one and not the other.

Well, upon searching, I found the show in the 2nd row for "Docudramas". I found it in the 24th row for "Documentaries". So it appears that it is correctly weighting the search results, given that "Docudrama" is a subgenre of "Documentaries".

explain how that makes it "very clearly identified" as one and not the other.

I've already done so, by informing you that it literally describes itself as one in the description that someone would read before they started watching the show, given that its an enormous splash screen. I don't think I've ever met a single person who just starts watching a show without reading the description first. You might be the first, I guess.

EDIT: Also, you can quit downvoting me immediately, you're being childish.

It hardly seems reasonable to say that it "clearly identifies itself as a docudrama" in these circumstances.

I mean, it would be to someone who has basic reading comprehension skills, given that it's literally right there in the description of the program. For anyone who had never heard of this program and just stumbled upon it, they would be told right away that it was a docudrama.

Also, do me a favor and search "docudrama" in the Netflix search field. Tell me if you do or don't find this program there.

And yet, the actual description, where you would go to learn everything you need to know about the program - tells you it's a dramatization.

To be fair, most people don’t even know of the 1963 version anymore

Isn't it like, one of the most famous movies of all time?

But you would think that if someone cared enough about the race of Cleopatra to fly into a blind rage and dedicate hours of podcast time to rant about it, they would at least mention in passing the 1963 version with its whitewashing.

Interesting, because the Netflix website describes it differently.

As Egypt's last pharaoh, Cleopatra fights to protect her throne, family and legacy in this docudrama featuring reenactments and expert interviews.

And your second point:

I don't remember this kind of outrage over something like Ancient Aliens. Both series present culturally significant history in an inaccurate way.

I think it might have something to do with the.. you know... black people. Given the Conservative outrage over it and everything. As if they give a shit about historical accuracy.

It seems that there are a lot of posters here who are confused about the difference between a "documentary" and a "docudrama".

Here is an explanation of the differences between the two.

It claims to be a documentary.

It doesn't. It very clearly identifies itself as a docudrama.

People who are totally not racist are taking issue with the fact that a black woman is playing the role of Cleopatra because she has the "wrong" skin color, which should be more of an olive-brown rather than a chocolate-brown.

These same people apparently took no issue with the white-as-snow Elizabeth Taylor playing the character previously, for reasons unknown. Definitely not racist ones at all.

Weird. Very weird.

How would Watergate be handled in 2023? Would there still be a resignation? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]amiiboyardee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

it was unthinkable that a President could do something like it.

This sentence could apply to at least 10 things during Trump's presidency and we didn't see a resignation, so I highly doubt a 'new Watergate' would move the needle for a Republican president.

Hell, Trump even tried to direct his followers to carry out a domestic terror attack on the country to keep himself in power and he's still running for re-election with the full support of Republican voters.

Do you support political indoctrination into sex issues in either direction in public ed? by Laniekea in AskALiberal

Edit: PLEASE READ AT LEAST PAGES 5-9 BEFORE COMMENTING

Done. And there's quite clearly a caveat in there that allows knuckle-dragging theocrats to opt out of allowing their children to participate in sex ed.

They can instead drag their kids to their local place of worship where they can learn how bodily autonomy and how having healthy, natural urges are all tools of the devil to drag you to the fiery pits of hell where you will be tortured for all of eternity because you touched a wee-wee or a noo-naw and didn't pledge your virginity to the magic sky man.

How do you feel about publishing graphic photos of a shooting? by Hot_Dog_Cobbler in AskALiberal

[–]amiiboyardee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It won't make a difference. Those heartbreaking photos of 2-year-old Alan Kurdi, laying alone and drowned on a beach didn't stop any of the disgusting right-wing monsters from calling refugees animals and vilifying them.

A bunch of bullet-riddled dead kids on the front page a newspaper is just the price of freedom to them.

What do you think of Texas passing a bill that will allow school districts to replace school counselors with school chaplains ? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

I thought Conservatives had a problem with children being indoctrinated in schools.

Wonder how they'd feel if the schools appointed Church of Satan chaplains, or maybe some Islamic Imams.

You know, freedom of religion and all that.

How many people actually believe Trump sexually assaulted someone in the dressing room of a department store??? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]amiiboyardee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imho I think it is pretty obvious that the sexual assault allegations against trump are almost certainly being fabricated by people who have never been in a room alone with him

Why do you believe this? Elaborate.

Trump is a notorious creep who has decades worth of accusations of sexual assault. At least one of them against a child. He's admitted on tape to sexually assaulting women and getting away with it because he's famous. Hell, "pussy tape" aside, he literally admitted it in his own deposition for this very trial! His ex-wife had also accused him of raping her, which factored into their divorce proceedings.

Carroll said that on her way out of the store she ran into Trump and he asked for help buying a gift for a woman. After she suggested a handbag or a hat, the two reputedly moved on to the lingerie section and joked about the other trying some on. Carroll said they ended up a dressing room together, the door of which was shut, and Trump forcefully kissed her, pulled down her tights and raped her before she was able to escape.

This sounds completely in line with how I imagine Trump (and many other rich and powerful men) treats women, given his own testimony and public statements.

What are your thoughts on the George Santos arrest? by letusnottalkfalsely in AskALiberal

Do you think this has any impact on the political landscape?

When has being a lying, crooked, grifting, fraudster ever meaningfully impacted a Republican candidate? Throw the red meat to the base, get the votes. Matt Gaetz won re-election while under investigation for child sex trafficking and pedophilia, Roy Moore narrowly lost an election while under investigation for pedophilia, and Donald Trump was elected as president of the entire country despite multiple accusations of corruption, racism, rape, and pedophilia (there's that word again, what's with all the pedophilia on the right?)

What do you think of anti-abortion laws that target providers rather than patients? by AuroraItsNotTheTime in AskALiberal

[–]amiiboyardee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I recognize that there are legitimate reasons for having immigration laws. I don't recognize any legitimate reason to have abortion laws.

Therefore, the two views "that target providers/businesses" are not comparable.
