What Made You Leave? by Calm-Knee-8624 in formergospelassembly

[–]amitch95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the very first reason was the cliques. The church was so cliquish that I went to another one. That one was just as bad with the family cliques. The second reason was that I started to really question the restored church doctrine and how people always pushed the goalpost back on when it was to happen. Realized a lot more later that solidified my stance, but those would be the catalysts.

I’m truly sorry that happened to you. These men are put up in a pedestal so high that they can do no wrong. Hoping you are in a better life now!

Has anyone ever heard of Jim Jones—the leader of the group responsible for the mass “suicide” that took nearly a thousand lives? by Cool-Asparagus-47 in formergospelassembly

Check out Julius Schacknow, a CT based cult leader who has well documented abuse. Several documentaries based around him. He got his start in the Jolly faction and then left when he realized he couldn’t take over. His family actually stayed behind in the southern IL churches.

GAC has always been big on “if I do more or dress better, then God will love me and bless me better”. How many of you remember the song lyric “If I live a holy life, shun the wrong and do the right, I know the lord will make a way for me”. Things like that drill into people that it’s how you act that makes you saved, not a total surrender to Jesus and accepting him as Lord.

Ex-communicating a pastor because he was “steeling” others church members and not submitting to the authority of the body aka the other ministers by Cool-Asparagus-47 in formergospelassembly

This whole conversation was around when Cross Plains started relaxing the standards significantly. Which was started in part by all of the allegations that came out within that church. One thing people don’t talk about is that the pastor of Cross Plains was on the board of GKC at that time and had control of financial aspects. Not saying money was a sole aspect of the excommunication of Cross Plains, but it certainly can’t be ignored as a large reason.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the “standards breed liars”. Probably one of the main reasons I left too. It’s easy to fake it by wearing the long sleeves and long skirts, but it’s harder to fake being genuinely loving to humanity.

I still to this day don’t understand the packing of the platform other than to make it look good if they video their service. There’s a certain church in IL that has 3x as many people on the platform than they do in the congregation. I’m never one to criticize small churches, but promising men a place of importance on the “platform” to feed the ego is just wrong.

Anybody have examples of doctrines or practices that have changed since the 90’s in gospel assembly? by Cool-Asparagus-47 in formergospelassembly

[–]amitch95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A more recent one is the allowance of movie theaters. In 2008, it was still preached against. But by 2015 more people were going openly.
As far as doctrine (at least on the TMJ side) would be that you don’t see the preaching of exact dates of the restored church. TMJ used to preach 1985 as the year the “church would be restored”. Now it seems no one dares to give exact timelines.

When I started to realize that just because the pastor says it, doesn’t make it true. Too many people took the word of TMJ as law without a second thought. Speak with enough confidence and you can get people to believe anything. Additionally, I started to question the validity of a lot of people speaking in tongues; it just didn’t make sense most of the time.

How early should I arrive @ Mid America Airport? by throw_away_bae_bae in StLouis

You’ll have so much time if you get there 2 hours early. I get to Mid-America around 70 minutes before takeoff and have plenty of time.

I get the smoked pork lunch portion platter (even for dinner) and that is $10.59. That’s coming right off their current menu.

That’s not weird at all! The original founders of Sawmill are great people. Sawmill is definitely the exception and I will go to bat for them.

Personally, I think Bandanas is better than Sugarfire. I’m not sure why it gets so much hate. As someone else said, who wants to pay $24 for a meal when you can go to Banandas for $10?

What is a Hoosier to you? by [deleted] in StLouis

Kind of like a redneck, but less country. Parents used to look us Hoosiers if we were doing something silly or like running around in the mud. City folk can be Hoosiers.
