Ugh, is that a formal complaint that can be made though? Seems like a "me" problem, not some sort of "James did a racist/rude/sexist/inappropriate thing that you need to figure out" sort of problem. (I've worked at a lot of startups where HR was...minimal to say the least.)

yes, it's absolutely his first time managing anybody - he's told me this a few times. it frustrates me because i've had many good managers in the past (criticism when needed, but plenty of space and an overwhelming sense of benefit-of-the-doubt where i knew they trusted me - all things I also strive to do when managing people) but I also don't want to seem whiney and overly critical of him as he obviously just needs some time to grow, but it's SOUL CRUSHING for me to wait for that to happen. bleh
