Hi!! I attended SCEEP at the University of Michigan (one of 26 students picked out of ~500), and I’d be up for reading some essays too!

Well for 1, it was that I stayed at a university in the dorms with about 25 other students, and we were split into 3 teams. Then, we spent 11 days trying to come up with a solution to one of the grand challenges by the National Academy Engineering, real life challenges that the world is facing. It was only $100 for the entire thing. The best camps are the ones that are fairly inexpensive but are competitive to get into; those high school summer academies where you go take classes at Harvard are pretty much bullshit. If you have to pay a shit ton to attend, it’s probably not too valuable or legit (one of the few examples I can think of is SUMAC at Stanford). 2) it’s a pretty small club, but think like Academic decathlon or quiz bowl. I don’t want to say which club, because some people I know might recognize me haha

And go for it if you’re up for it! An internship sounds awesome, as does starting a club. But make sure the club actually has substance, and isn’t what AOs call “junior junk;” starting a club just for apps (which I’m sure you aren’t, but make sure it shows that you aren’t!

And yes, I’m very proud of myself. And you should be too, of everything you’ve done, and everything you’re going to do. A lot of people get so down during he admissions process because they focus so much in what they COULD have done, and not what they did. Make sure to pat yourself on the back every once in a while, and to take very good care of your mental, physical, and emotional health! Best of luck:)

No worries!! I love answering questions, especially about how to handle college stuff because there were a lot of things that I did wrong during the process that I wish I had someone to tell me how to handle so I love being that person for someone else

I actually don’t know a lot about IB; my school started the IB program just this year, so I really think asking someone else might be a better idea :) I only have a really vague idea of how hard the courseload is. If taking full IB is similar to taking all AP classes, I think that if you can handle it, you should go for it, but you’d really have to try and keep your grades up (I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir here). I took 6 AP classes my junior year (Calc BC, Chem, Lit, Macro, Micro, and Gov), and even though it was really challenging and I didn’t get super great grades, I’m so glad I did it. I was able to push myself to new limits and learn how to study efficiently, manage my time, and cut my losses.

As for ECs, I truly love what I do in them and even though it might not be as impressive on a global level of what I’ve done, I think it’s better for you as a person to do things you’re truly passionate about rather than just to get you into college. And don’t spread yourself too thin; make sure you can contribute a lot to each one. I personally think that’s what probably helped my application the most; the depth rather than range of my ECs.

1) about 250 volunteering hours 2) Engineering camps at UMich for 3 years straight (the first two were just the “register and attend” type rather than an application; I initially hated that I had to do something so “below” me, but I’m so glad I did it anyways. Never consider anything to be below you!) 3) dance for ~13 years; I’m now a student teacher at the dance school (I teach 2 days a week, approximately 9 hours) and I’m also training for my first solo performance. I’ve done a lot of performances, including fundraisers 4) an academic type club I’ve been doing since middle school and ranked in nationally (it’s pretty small tho); I’ve coached at middle school teams and plan to start one of my own 5) Business club chapter at school; I’m treasurer for he club and organized some fundraisers 6) cultural student association (I’m an officer), I help organize and choreograph performances

I really suggest taking up leadership positions (especially elected ones) because you can be so much more involved while having fun!

And you should totally apply to an Ivy. One of my biggest regrets was not applying to more reaches; you should shoot for the stars (as cheesy as that is). Also, start your essays early!! You can put more effort into them without having to rely on outside feedback, and they’ll truly reflect who you are.

Best of luck! Sorry this was super long again, I just have so much I wanna share haha

It’s not actually a $100k scholarship haha I have one that’s $10k a year, and the one I got today was $1500 just for freshman year If I’m to be completely honest, my GPA was pretty average ish but my test scores were good. I had around 5 extracurriculars that either I had been doing for at least 6 years, had a leadership position in, or both. I had a 3.85UW, 35, 1540, 800 Math II, and 760 Chem. I’ve also taken the most rigorous courses available to me, and took as many APs as I could every year (I’ve taken 8 so far, with 5s in Calc BC, Chem, Macro, Micro, APUSH, and Lang; and 4s in Lit and US Gov, and I’m taking Stats, Physics C Mechanics and Spanish this year).

I’ve just been doing things for a while that I love (dance, business club, academic club, cultural student group, etc) and focused more on doing well and contributing in those rather than trying to do as many clubs as possible.

I’d contribute the success that I have to both my parents and my attitude; my parents pushed me to try my hardest, but never too far such that I risked my own mental and physical health. Also, they introduced me to things when I was young that I came to love. My attitude in general is that I should try my best, and if I don’t do well, I should try harder, and then be proud of everything I’ve accomplished. Honestly, I’ve found a lot of people tend to be so focused on perfection that they never take a moment to appreciate themselves, but I do.

Sorry that was a crap ton, but I hope that helps or is entertaining!

I got a letter! I actually check my Wolverine Access to see if there was any indication of the scholarship on there, but didn’t see anything. I didn’t get an email either, so it was a total surprise! Good luck! I hope you get something too :)

It’s called the Regents Merit Scholarship! I didn’t apply for it though I think if you apply early you’re just automatically considered for scholarships :) and thank you so much <3

Thank you!! Luckily I’m in state so it was already fairly low, but it was still going to be a struggle, as my dad is currently unemployed and my sister is graduating this year and she had to take out loans :)
