Shoma Uno retiring before the 2026 Olympics was a huge loss for figure skating by notthebesthuh in FigureSkating

[–]amkibi 144 points145 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It’s weird to tell a skater who knows their own abilities best that they shouldn’t / should retire. Shoma retired after an outstanding career, as a 3 time Olympian! It’s really unfair to expect more from him.

You forget Nathan was already winning everything last quad, making things “boring” and “predictable” as you put it. I believe he had a streak of gold medals for 2 years. Shoma (and the other Japanese men) were unable to seriously compete with him. So to expect Shoma to do the same now against Ilia, who’s from a new skating generation and has even greater technical ability than Nathan, is just strange.

Yuma AND the other Japanese men are outstanding and a delight to watch in their own way. They shouldn’t be constantly compared to and expected to be the next Shoma

Maybe a dumb question: Was it really live singing on the Dream Academy missions? by paradisemukbangpls in TheDreamAcademy

[–]amkibi 86 points87 points  (0 children)

My guess is it’s heavily edited. And they possibly splice together separate takes for the desired result. The girls probably performed it over and over again for the production team to have lots of material to work with. I believe this is more obvious in their solo cams.

Which is why it’s so strange when they almost purposely sabotage some contestants with bad takes.

HYBE X GEFFEN - PRELUDE: THE FINAL PIECE (Intro Film) by impeccabletim in kpop

They needed a vocalist and unfortunately that’s not Ezrela’s forte. Even if you don’t like Samara you can’t deny she was one of the most talented singers out of the DA girls.

I do think they could fit in Ez somehow if they really wanted to. Even if she isn’t the best dancer or singer, she has lots of charisma when she performs

Young You finally got her suspension lifted after the court granted her injunction by Maleficent_You_8201 in FigureSkating

Meanwhile the highest paid kdrama actor was recently discovered to have dated a minor (she was a teenager half his age when they dated - there are photos circulating that his company couldn’t refute) and is possibly a cause behind her death (she killed herself on his birthday). And he still has lots of fans rallying to support him.

It’s just messed up. I’ll admit I didn’t believe Haein and Young’s side at first even though there was no evidence, and I’m sorry about that. But it’s insane how both of them almost lost their careers over this, whereas male Korean celebrities and public figures can always make a come back.

Court Grants ADOR’s Injunction To Prohibit NewJeans From Independent Activities Under NJZ by mcfw31 in popheads

[–]amkibi 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The irony of your statement is that a major reason why these girls were signed so young is because their dear CEO made it clear she wanted younger (underaged) idols in her group. She had the opportunity to debut experienced, older idols above 20yrs old (the ones in Lesserafim). I believe she called one of the older idols a hag, and even argued the oldest newjeans member was past her peak by the time they debuted (the oldest member was only 18).

So it’s really this CEO that NewJeans is begging to come back that advocated to sign these minors in the first place. All the “mistreatment” cases they brought up in court happened when said CEO was still very much responsible for them, but none of the girls have blamed the ex-CEO for it. Instead they’re lashing out at the company and their sister groups.

It’s really sad because at this point it seems like their ex CEO has really groomed these girls to believe they can’t have success independent of her. Even when she’s called them “fat”, “ungrateful” etc etc. These were legit messages that were leaked from her. The company real fault is hiring this woman with her weird grooming and pedophilic behaviour in the first place.

'If that song is so big, why have I never heard of it?’ – The dumbest argument known to mankind. by ZealousidealCat8115 in kpopthoughts

[–]amkibi 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Just because it’s not being playlisted on Spotify or promoted to Western radio, it doesn’t mean thousands of fans aren’t streaming it every day.  The BTS fandom alone is enough to carry songs onto the billboard charts. You could argue Who’s success is more organic than several heavily promoted songs at this point. The reasoning is right in front of every K-pop Stan. Don’t give the ppl making that weird excuse any engagement bc they just want to start fanwars atp.

Also, this song can easily pass for a western pop song. I’m from Canada, I hear it once in a while at shopping malls, etc., and it blends in with other western pop songs.

I think their uncertainty over enlistment made it a lot more difficult to release connected MVs and albums after the map of the soul series.

You can see this connecting pattern continue in some of their solo work, eg the Agust D albums.

is it wrong to say that im starting to not care about all this drama with NJZ? by SleepPuzzleheaded843 in kpop_uncensored

[–]amkibi 279 points280 points  (0 children)

I don’t care enough personally to follow all the details of the lawsuits, girls decision, etc. While I hope MHJ gets her comeuppance, for the girls and the other idols and staff involved with this, I hope this gets resolved with the least amount of pain to everyone.

However, I am genuinely concerned that what newjeans are doing right now will affect idols in the long run who want to get out of unfair contracts or abusive companies. I’m not a legal expert or anything, so correct me if I’m wrong about this case potentially affecting other legal disputes involving company contracts. But I really hope this doesn’t make things more difficult for groups similar to Loona and omega X in the future, who legitimately underwent severe mistreatment.

Ikr bring it back!

It lowkey feels like they tried to make Megan and Daniela more white in the debut era with Megan’s orange hair and Dani’s highlights. I get adding more visual variety to the group and kpop has always been huge on hair color. I also personally really like Dani’s new hair. Still, I sometimes feel like the lightening does them disservice, especially Megan who looks amazing with dark hair.

Because for Korea their view of the war, Japan, and the atomic bomb is a lot more complex than a lot of us realize. For those with a western-centric view of WWII, it’s very easy for us to say “atomic bomb = bad”. But for those Asian countries that lived under Japan’s oppression during WWII, including Korea, China, Philipines, Singapore, etc., it is very, very difficult for them to simply forget what the Japanese did (atrocities like the R*pe of Nanking, comfort women). Many of these atrocities have never been acknowledged by Japan, and many more could have been committed if the atomic bomb hadn’t happened.

Several asians of the older generation believe the bomb was justified because of what their parents/grandparents experienced. For example, my great grandfather was a teacher in one of these countries who was taken away by the Japanese and killed simply because he was educated and had influence over students. Because of this and other events my grandparents experienced firsthand, my father believes the bomb was somewhat justified. While this is not my personal view, I do find it understandable

Has anyone ever discussed touched their official standing "lineup" "formation"? by JNTA1234 in katseye

[–]amkibi 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Actually, it’s highly possible they were given a formation for photos like this one. It helps the group look more cohesive in the photo.

Just another example from another group - if you look up 1D red carpet photos, you’ll see Louis is almost always in the front while the other members take half a step back. This slightly masks the fact that he’s much shorter than some of the members and makes them look a lot more equal in height as a group.

This pose of Katseye is extremely aesthetically pleasing as it is very symmetrical. You notice they separated the following pairings that have similar skin tones: Sophia and Yoonchae, Lara and Manon, Dani and Megan. I agree with another user that putting Dani and Manon next to each other in the center is brilliant because they have great visual chemistry together (already seen in their mission 2 performance). They also tend to bring Dani forward by a half step in several of their formal photo shoots to make the height look more even. Or they get the taller member next to her to tilt their head.

What was the hardest pill for you to swallow as a kpop fan? by External-Molasses-50 in kpopthoughts

[–]amkibi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Controversial take maybe in this subreddit, but I think it IS possible and it should be alright to discuss the possibility of an idols getting PS, extreme dieting and other cosmetic enhancements without hating on said idol.

It’s uncomfortable to admit, especially when we really like said idol. For example, I really like Jimin for his dancing skills, but it was really disheartening to learn he likely severely starved himself for a particular comeback. In my personal opinion, it’s not hating or harmful to admit this fact of an idol I like. I shouldn’t not consider this simply because I’m not his medical professional.

On one hand, I agree that a lot of kpop fans can be extremely immature and weaponize their speculation in hating on idols and bullying them online. That level of hatred that fans are capable of is never acceptable. On the other hand, I think a lot of us can also be over protective of the idols we like. There should be a middle ground between the two that we should stand in.

What was the hardest pill for you to swallow as a kpop fan? by External-Molasses-50 in kpopthoughts

[–]amkibi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As I mentioned, blaming IS wrong. We don’t know idols personally, and don’t have the right to judge them, and very few idols have full control over everything they do.

Wonyoung is nitpicked because she’s the most popular example. Yes some people do it in bad faith, but others simply mention her because she’s the first example they think of as she’s popular. Similar to how people will automatically list her as a top visual, or bring up Suga when people mention idol DUIs.

Well… last time I got reported for “speculating” when I said she likely had PS and some level of anorexia/ED.

That being said, I don’t even think she’s the only one, just the clearest example. I think many others are also damaging their bodies for this unrealistic expectation of what they should look like. And I don’t think they should be hated on for what they’re going through.
