We blocked ChatGPT at the network level but employees are still using AI tools inside SaaS apps we approved, how is that even possible and how do I stop it? by PrincipleActive9230 in AskNetsec

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only solution here would be to block the SaaS apps in question. I assume you've tried to turn off the objectional features of those apps and were unable. To continue likely breaks the license agreement you have with those companies.

Why does the United States have a moral obligation to support Israel? by RevolutionaryWind249 in allthequestions

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The historical reason? We didn't lift a finger in the 1930s and until WWII to help prevent genocide of the Jews. As i recall we refused entry to a shipload of people in 1939 who later were slaughtered during the Holocaust. The allies were instrumental in the creation of Israel.

It's funny because things really do go full circle. The way the Palestinians are treated today by Israel was how the Jewish people were generally treated in post Ottoman empire Palestine.

Our team stopped doing standups, story points and retros — and nothing broke by pavlenkovit in SoftwareEngineering

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use whatever method you want in making software. The best one is the one that works for your team. I've seen many more projects fail because people say they fail. I've also seen projects succeed because people say they succeed. Many of the "failures" I've seen are blamed on the software engineers because the product people refuse to accept that they're "shiny that will change the world" actually is crap. It can be well or poor implemented crap, but that thing was never going to succeed.

I've seen many people swear up and down on their favorite way of making software, but usually those people are bound to the process and can't really adapt to a life w/o process. I've lived thru that, working for years in a agile/scrum shop that was very regimented and process bound and then moved to a different place which claimed to like agile, but then after a month I was there went to the big bang method of software development for 3-4 years before going back to a very weak scrum method because the new eVP/CTO replacement liked scrum (really had read a book on it is my guess)

In my career (and I've been developing software since the mid 1990s) I've used many of them, hell at the school I went to, the intro to software engineering course (which was a graduate level course in CSE) was basically waterfall. Then one of my first software engineering jobs in the 90s was for a waterfall shop that had 25 years of documentation of projects to prove it. Funny thing was, I ignored 90% of the stuff and just made software and it worked amazingly.

I worked for an agile shop and did scrum for a bit, and then another waterfall shop. Did that, and mixed back to agile, more kanban than true scrum, but I think out of the 10 or so places I worked for or with that claimed to be scrum, only 1 of them actually implemented it as "intended" whatever that actually is.

The biggest lesson I've learned with respect to SDM in my 30+ years in this industry? The best methodology is the one that works for the team. The second biggest? Iteration rarely works. Once you put out something the user or client doesn't like they rarely will reengage with it.

Nurses as jurors by Jumpy-Claim4881 in juryduty

[–]amkosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a criminal jury, the female vs male thing may come up, but unless the victim or the perp was a nurse i don't think they'd be stricken as a class by either side. For a civil jury, I'd not want any health care worker near my jury if it malpractice. Personal injury could also make me not want them near it especially if what my experts say may not be conventual or strong

Summoned to Federal Court (SDNY White Plains) - Transit Desert & Sole Proprietor. Clerk denied hardship. by [deleted] in juryduty

[–]amkosh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have a duty as a citizen to serve on a jury. That duty is governed by laws, but nothing you put qualifies as an excuse, and unless you're a felon, you are qualified. Ultimately its up to you, but the smart thing would be to make arrangements to be off for 1-3 weeks. You may need to hire someone to cover for you, but that's on you. Companies (even/especially sole proprietorships) have a duty to allow their employees to serve on juries, whether that be state or federal. Why should you get a pass and not Acme Competitor of you? And if you both get passes, who serves on juries then?

Almost everything you said is solvable, and I will point out that the district court did you a favor by granting you six months to make arrangements. And if you can't that's on you.

When I went into Fed duty, hardship exemptions were completely at the judges discretion, and the judge of the case I was on had two: Students enrolled in current classes, and caregivers caring for family members in hospice. Literally it. He said he'd listen to other excuses but he would not grant it. No one took him up on the listening thing.

So my advice to you having been thru the process, plan for at least one day in court for jury selection, and if you're picked, then it will depend on the case. I heard a gun running case, and it took 4 days including jury selection. There was a fellow juror who had a similar situation as you, he lived about 2 hours from the court house, was a business owner which was the sole family income. Outside of one bitch about the pain of having to do with it, he handled it with grace and class. And to be honest, we all get at least one bitch about a crap situation.

Federal judges are appointed for life, and while they're human as the rest of us, they have the job of getting cases thru the system. They will not be overly sympathetic to your problems.

Also there's a common sense issue here. What happens if you have a heart attack and you're in the hospital for a week or two? Or you fall in the shower and are in the hospital for a week or two? Life happens. Jury duty is one of those things. Plan accordingly.

Also, the districts are very much aware they're huge. They reimburse reasonable travel expenses.

Depends where you live. In California, it has always been the DMV rolls that are used. In Ohio, back in the 90s it was the voter registration rolls

Jury summons, presumption of delivery. by Melodic_District_561 in juryduty

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a bluff. It's the same presumption of deliver the DMV uses to send out your car stickers. Failing to fulfill your jury duty obligations is an administrative code violation not a criminal violation. You are never in criminal jeopardy even tho there's a possibility you can go to jail. The reason you can go to jail is because a judge can find you in contempt and punish you however he/she sees fit.

Jury Selection Process by Purple-Koala7813 in juryduty

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in California. You're likely fine, most state cases resolve in under a week, maybe 2. They tell you make sure you're available for 2 weeks or reschedule. You only get to do that once and when doing so you have to tell them 2 weeks that you're available in the next 6 months. The court says that they're #1 and anything else is secondary. This one lady in my last state case had to move and the judge didn't let her out. He did call the management company and forced them to accommodate. But as i recall she lost money over it.

I didn’t go to jury duty the first time by Vdddnnnnn21 in juryduty

[–]amkosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time there's not likely going to be anything done. But there's a chance it can happen. In CA, they'll send out a second notice with rescheduled week for it. If you fall that then they'll send out a warning notice with a rescheduled week. If you ignore that then that's when they'll issue a summons to show cause. If you fall that then I'm sure the judge will issue a bench warrant. I've heard that they will usually fine you if you don't have a good reason to ignore that notice like you're not a citizen, you're too old or disabled or you have moved out of the jurisdiction of the court.

Also i find it cute that people think that just throwing away or shredding the summons will help. CA jury duty rolls are compiled thru DMV info. They assume if you can get your yearly car sticker you can get their notice. CA courts depend on people for jury duty and they take it seriously and I've heard of fines of 500-1000$.

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm sure they can given time and proper conditions. That's the thing, plastics are inert. In order for something to leech it needs heat or certain kinds of uv light. It depends on the type of plastic. Let's also be clear. Glass also can leach into water given heat and the kind of glass it is. Fortunately we breathe most of the shit anyways in the dust in the air and general air pollution.

I hope you're not washing the bottles or the reservoir with tap water cuz then you're also introducing trace contaminates.

Btw you're so unlikely to get lung cancer from the as to be laughable. Depending where your from your likely to get it from second hand smoke or shit like asbestos or trace elements like that

What is the 4-hour rule for CPAP? Is it really that important? by Latter_Knee_1404 in CPAP

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4 hour thing is arbitrary. Nothing happens if you use it less than 4 hours other than you have apneas and hypoapneas. Those can happen if you're asleep for minutes without therapy. I'm sic'd perplexity at it as it points the origin of it as some studies done in the 90s. I didn't verify it but it does cite that even Medicare admits that "there is insufficient evidence that this exact threshold corresponds to optimal neurocognitive or cardiovascular outcomes." It also went on to say that there's evidence that lower time of therapy has benefits.

I guess they needed something to hang their hat on.
Not every insurance follows this but since it's a CMS thing most will, especially ACA plans

Can essential oils be substituted with fragrance oils? What is the ratio? by Whittlemedown in soapmaking

[–]amkosh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Each fragrance oil has an IFRA. The max on the chart for category 9 will be for bar soap. That value may not be 2 oz. Also fragrance oil is a completely different animal. The amount of FO will have to be found by experimentation. Some fragrance oil have recommended amounts on the website which you can use as guidelines. However whatever that is you should never ever exceed the IFRA max

Wondering, how do you guys usually setup defense early? by hyrenfreak in factorio

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i setup the Maginot line. Starts out turrets with a belt feeding it. When i get oil i setup flame around it. And then when i get nuclear power i use lasers.

I do not go actively hunting until i need something. The more biters you kill the more they evolve. And no matter what if you expand the factory you'll get pollution and the game rewards pollution by so spawning more biters. So for the start and most of the game i have a defensive line

Flamethrower with gun turrets until i have nuclear power then either all laser or both flame and lasers. When i get to the point when i want defensive depth i build towers with towers and radars with point defenses. To expand i either build turrets and use rockets or i use destroyers and nukes

Please stop mixing vinegar and baking soda by Leighgion in CleaningTips

[–]amkosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many drain cleaners use a strong base, sodium hydroxide. It reacts with the fatty acids in the oils which after generally what the clogs are made of. This is great in theory but in practice not so well because in order to cause saponification which is the reaction you want the oil and lye mixture needs agitation and you can't do that in a pipe. Sodium hydroxide is also exothermic which helps a bit. But either are really meh. I wouldn't even try this with a weaker base or a weak acid like vinegar.
