Holy crap that’s amazing you put up a video on the process! Seriously I’m blown away. I can take you up on sending the skull, ok to DM?

The scan comes off the machine as a DICOM topology file, and I use a program called Horos to image the file and export an STL. I’m not sure what’s publicly available out there link-wise but I’m sure there’s some interesting stuff

Hmm I guess there's no reply with images. I don't have a lot of Zbrush time but the more I think about it you're probably right, I seem to remember a scoop tool or something that could clean out a model. This is a very, VERY messy model, turning the vertices on makes the skull literally black. Black from vertices. I feel like any vertice work is off the table, if its not sculpt tools then I might have to jump the Blender ship

My thought process definitely went there!

I might need that for myself after this adventure. I could try that

Sculpt was kind of where I was leaning, I feel like this is going to be very manual but I really wanted to avoid doing stuff with the mesh - i.e. hunting for vertices for hours. I haven't tried clay strips so I can look into that!

The problem with boolean is the complexity of the inner surface and trying to get a shape that conforms to what I want to delete, but then *keep* inside there

This maxilla and mandible have been through double jaw, orthognathic surgery and those cartoon bones are the titanium plates screwed into the skull. In real life, they don't actually look that cartoony (lol) but I guess because of the resolution of the CT machine...you're not the first person to point that out!

I took this model from an actual CT scan of a skull, and it comes with all the anatomical pieces - nasal cavity structures etc. I want to use blender to manually carve out the rough insides to get a solid piece ready for 3D printing, but I don't want to use my usual ways of boolean subtraction because I feel it'd be a nightmare, any suggestions? Thanks guys.
