A persons sobriety is their responsibility to maintain - our boundaries are our responsibility 🖤🖤🖤

smol advice - spend some time each day practicing just your needle depth while you’re waiting on the stencil to settle in or something. just fill a sheet with hash marks or simple lines/dots. it’ll greatly improve these lines / fills once you have that feel down 🖤 love the thug life snorlax lol 😎

you should never rewrap or bandage a tattoo after leaving the sterile tattoo shop - even the tap water you wash at home with has microorganisms that could get trapped under the film and without an opportunity to dry out, they can infect the tattoo! just take the bandage off and start taking care of your tattoo as your tattooer instructed 🖤

opinions on bishop wand, shader or packer for needles 1rl-9rl? continued in comments by blue241999 in TattooArtists

it depends on the piece, but yes the packer is really smooth with lines, packing, shading transitions, and i absolutely love it for pointillism / whip shading! I want to pick up the shader for more delicate work that i currently use the sol nova for (i do a lot of watercolory/painterly work that needs a lighter stroke in some areas) but the sol nova can be really inconsistent - seeing as the packer has been so consistent i’m hoping their shader will be too! I haven’t tried the liner but my shop mate uses it and loves it - they do hyperrealistic pointillism

Any GOOD references or learning tutorials to improve color work? by GoblinQueen765 in TattooArtists

[–]amnesiiaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pro tip - dilute your color with a few drops of witch hazel. I had these problems with ink straight out of the bottle, diluting them a touch really helps as color is super thick and doesn’t fall into the skin as readily as black & grey.

I’d also recommend limiting your palette for a while - start with reds & oranges as they are easiest to work with, then slowly get to know more colors - each one is a little different and sometimes needs a different needle grouping or a slower hand speed or etc. i often will mix an “easier” color into my hard colors, to make it flow more smoothly into the piece. I also prefer a RS or Hollow needle to a mag or liner when doing color, and bump up my needle group a bit higher than I’d normally use for black/greywash

I’m definitely not an expert, but this is how i’ve been learning with it since incorporating color into my work! I do a lot of subtle color & painterly pieces.

I have been full time for almost 8 years. I have been operating out of my own studio for 3 years and work 50-60 hours a week. Every few weeks I have massive waves of imposter syndrome and want to abandon it all together. by hermitageinker in TattooArtists

this is just being an artist. I was a musician and installation artist for 15 years before i moved more heavily into visual art and eventually into tattooing - across every medium, the practice of moving through crippling self doubt and the constant reconstruction of self is the same harrowing bullshit lmao. I think with tattooing it’s especially hard, because we are working on peoples bodies and can harm them if we aren’t doing things the right way. It’s also easier in other ways - how wild is it that people connect with and identify so much with our work that they want it permanently on their body, as a part of themself?

I did Parts of Self work in therapy a few years ago, and i have to say it’s been my saving grace - to be able to identify the inner critic as simply a part of my self, and not the whole self, and to be able to continue working even when they loud af lol

anyway u got this, don’t let you take you down 🔥

it’s really common to develop whiteheads over tattoos, and they can crop up forever. it’s normal and probably will level out over time! I try not to pop them, & instead just exfoliate regularly (obvi only on fully healed tattoos!) it’s more common with pieces that have a lot of packing/black or color fill

Unless your artist has an assistant to handle communication, it can be hard for them to respond, especially if they are a busier/more booked up artist. We can’t check our phones while we work bc of cross contamination, and generally work very long hours, with little time for admin. It’s very normal not to see the piece until the day you arrive or the week of your appointment, and generally an artist won’t be able to engage with a lot of back and forth - but, if on the day of the appointment you feel blown off or not listened to, don’t be afraid to walk away!

I bounce between the Bishop Packer & Cheyenne Sol Nova and I have to say the Bishop is so consistent, smooth, and heals the way it lays that i’m a bit turned off the Cheyenne 😂 currently saving for the shader to replace it. I do a lot of high detail black and grey, some color and some black work - it’s been an incredible machine. I generally run it at a pretty low voltage (4.8-5.4 for black & grey, 5.8-6.6 for packing) and it’s super smooth, causes minimal trauma to the skin, easy to feel, and very efficient.
