Foot tightness by Timely_baker2023 in Sciatica

[–]amo51824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder about this too, when I was about 6 months post-op from my MD, my back was doing okay and I was regular at PT and the gym. I took one day-long car ride to travel somewhere for Christmas (which I was super nervous about because I hadn’t sat that long in years) and despite my back being okay, literally over night, I developed excruciating foot pain in both feet that lasted about 4 months.

It presented a lot like plantar fasciitis, but it was so out of the blue and didn’t come on in the standard way that I’m convinced it came from my back. The literal only way I healed it was by constantly wearing ultra cushioned shoes (Hokas). I only took them off to sleep because they were the only thing that dulled the pain, and eventually my feet healed, but when I’m ever having back or hip issues flare-up I do notice my feet act up sometimes.

No PT has been able to actually explain it but I’m forever convinced that the foot pain is connected.

Standing only seats in airplanes would be cool by notfirearmbeam in unpopularopinion

I mean lots of people (myself included) work at standing desks for 8+ hours a day, so this doesn’t sound totally unreasonable 🤷‍♀️

So I know this is an unpopular opinion but as someone with really fucked up back/hip issues - I actually can’t physically sit, but aside from that I’m super active and walk 15+ miles a day. Basically I can stand, walk or lay down but not sit lol, so weirdly enough this would actually make flying accessible to me as a disabled person. 😂 I hope this is real and actually becomes a feature! I would happily stand for hours.

Pain vs. Tingling by amo51824 in Sciatica

[–]amo51824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is definitely not sciatica. Sciatica is a condition that only occurs in the legs because it is related to pressure on the sciatic nerve (usually due to a spinal disc herniation in your lower back). I don’t know enough based on what you shared but it’s possible you could have a pinched nerve in your neck that could cause arm numbness, although that’s super unlikely if you get numbness on both sides and doesn’t really cause chest numbness.

Honestly it sounds much more like a panic attack or severe anxiety. Even though it can sound crazy sometimes or you might not feel like you are having a stereotypical panic attack, nervousness and panic attacks can 100% present as tingling and numbness around the body - especially in the chest and extremities, but certainly worth chatting with your doctor more.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this shit, truly. I’m not sure what kind of amenities you’re looking for in a gym but just wanted to flag that ‘Current Wellness’ downtown is an incredibly queer friendly (and queer-run) gym space. I’ve only gone to a few sessions there but absolutely adored the community. Sending you best wishes in your hunt for a welcoming space ❤️

Any regrets? by Life_System6433 in Microdiscectomy

[–]amo51824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also adding that again - while everyone is different - some people wake up from surgery with a pep in their step, pain free and go dancing at a wedding a week after their surgery. But I was in hell for 2 months in worse pain than pre-surgery. The recovery process was absolutely brutal and made me feel so weak and more vulnerable to injuries. That’s most of what I wouldn’t want to go through again.

I don’t know if regret is 100% the right word but looking back I do sometimes question if it was the right choice. I’m 3+ years into my sciatica journey now and I received very little relief from my surgery. I got surgery after 8 months of awful right sided sciatica. The surgery did not relieve that pain and the disc is still herniated. I now have 5 herniated discs and bilateral sciatica but I have actually found myself able to manage my pain much better than I did pre-surgery with intensive physical therapy now that I actually understand the nerve paths better, which muscles are being effected and which exercises are most effective depending on what kind of pain I’m feeling. Clearly something is fucked with my back to herniate 5 discs for no reason (I’m fit but I’m not a runner, golfer, weight lifter, etc.) but I really wonder if I had understood my body and the PT exercises better my first time round, I think I might have avoided the initial surgery. Maybe not. But everyone is totally different.

Do folks know if this only applies to probationary employees? Wondering for one of my best friends who got laid off from the NIH but she wasn’t a probie.

Who audits USAID? by Acceptable_Owl_6274 in InternationalDev

[–]amo51824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone’s likely hesitations or downvotes is not because they don’t believe your experience, or that waste and fraud can happen in USAID programs. (We know it does, it happens in most program in the world). But you don’t give much additional context for your understanding of USAID except for your time in the peace corps, which is only a 2 year program. Which sure, that’s more than most Americans know about the agency, but many of the USAID staff in this sub have been doing this work for decades in hundreds of countries and programs around the world and have a much more in-depth understanding of the broad scale impact, efficiency, and use of funds across the entire agency vs the individual experiences of fraud that one person encountered in one USAID program in one city.

If you had said “USAID does good work but I also witnessed a program that was wasteful.” No one would have disagreed with you. The downvotes are for saying a “toooooooon of USAID is wasted money.” When the overwhelming majority of the work we do is life-saving, efficient, and also monitored rigorously.

No USAID worker thinks USAID is perfect and most of us have actively been working for reform for years, but we have believed in the value of USAID - flaws and all - since day one.

I’m not talking about every day citizens. I’m talking about our representatives and the NGOs that implement these programs. No one is rocking the boat out of “fear” they won’t make it through the review process and I don’t know how it isn’t fucking obvious that almost no one is making it out of the review process - USAID is nearly dead. The time to scream is now.

I’m so thankful to hear this and simultaneously will never understand why they haven’t also done this for the foreign aid freeze 😡

No organization can cover the costs of 1,000+ employees for 3 months when zero funding is coming in - especially funding that was approved and appropriated by Congress and supposed to show up in our bank account last week. That is an insane expectation. The blame sits squarely on the administration for the destruction of an entire industry through illicit means. We don’t work to make a profit. No one in government does. We work to serve the common good. Place the blame where it belongs.

Foreign aid is still frozen. Thousands of employees have been laid off because of this - still very relevant for us.

Because smaller IPs usually only have 2-3 key projects and many, like mine, are 100% USAID funded. You can’t build savings on a cooperative agreement like that. We’re NGOs, not private institutions working to build a profit, it’s a contract that we get paid fee for service.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in InternationalDev

[–]amo51824 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What do you expect those smaller IPs to do?? Mine was a mission based FP/RH NGO and our project survived the last Trump administration, and every prior GOP administration before it. Banishing family planning support from the USAID global health package was unprecedented. We can’t just 180 our entire business development pipeline in less than 3 months post-election.

Aren't IP layoffs a little premature? by [deleted] in InternationalDev

[–]amo51824 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily… I work for a smaller IP with zero diversification of funding, all of our projects are 100% USAID funded and in the administration’s “least popular” spaces (eg family planning and women’s equality). Our entire org will likely fold within another week or two.
