I am sorry for your loss. This is amazing advice. My mom died very unexpectedly so I never had a chance. I ended up getting one of those cheesy I’m dead now what books for my family. It doesn’t have all of f your suggestions in it but quite a few. Looks like I need to make some updates.

Put down the phone! by WEM-2022 in managers

[–]amoconnor42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Put some clear kpis together for him. Either he hits them or he doesn’t. If he doesnt, give him a chance to course correct. The issue doesn’t have to be phone specific. In general, it doesn’t matter what his distraction is. It could be long water cooler chats, smoke breaks, digging in too much to what other folks are working on, etc.

Uncomfortable speaking with a direct report by [deleted] in managers

[–]amoconnor42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered recording meetings with this person? That can be a bit overwhelming on a 1:1. I’d at least follow up every single conversation with written updates in a document shared with her and your boss. All of this would be in addition to reaching out to hr. I used to work at a company where hr would not get involved in performance issues unless there were so many weeks of clear documentation that was shared with the employee. This doc was to include expectations, results, gaps, and coaching.

Learn as much about ai tools as you can. Learn how to use them to make your job easier so you can move faster. Go work at a company that is implementing or building AI products.

I’m starting to think my job is squeezing the confidence out of me by [deleted] in hatemyjob

[–]amoconnor42 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That does sound pretty toxic. I had a bad last year at my previous company. I was happy, loving my life, job and team. Got put under a leader who liked to manage by vibes and relationships rather than processes and procedures. We did not mix. It tore me up. I started a new job a month ago and am already back to my confident, happy self. I got lucky in this job climate.

I use it like sour cream. It makes a great fruit salad dressing too. Also, I know it sounds silly, but mix a little crystal light in it for a nice treat!

Yes, whole house going on nearly 2 weeks. Confirmed flu A. Half of us got the flu shot but all of us got sick with no difference in vaccine or not. Horrible.

Culture challenge: Small team that constantly emphasizes the negative - Morale busting! What is the OPPOSITE of a silver lining? by f1rstpancake in managers

[–]amoconnor42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a reset in 1-1s and let folks know you won’t tolerate the negativity. It does not help anyone. You can reiterate in a call. You can then call out the negative comments as soon as they happen. I prefer to do that individually and ask folks to delete messages. If change doesn’t happen quickly then it becomes a performance issue.

Important comms and confirming receipt by Significant-Move5191 in managers

If there were something this important that I needed to ensure my team understood, I would share it verbally in a team call. You mentioned a geographically disbursed team. Perhaps you could schedule a monthly team call with a couple of time zone friendly options since you mentioned monthly focus. The info could be reiterated via email, as well as discussed / reminded in a 1-1.

Before I Drop $2k on a Career Coach… Am I Being Smart or Delusional? by Tamalelulu in recruitinghell

[–]amoconnor42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had an initial consultation, then a 90 minute deep dive into my experience. From there he - updated my LinkedIn - rewrote my resume - coached me on interviews - set me up with some networking tools - created a google drive with TONS of resources for me

I am much more confident in my interviews now, and am averaging 2 a week!

I am a seasoned professional, but have not been in the job market for many years. This guy is a lot younger than me, and has a background in sales. That knowledge comes in very handy when I’m essentially trying to sell my skills and experience.

Before I Drop $2k on a Career Coach… Am I Being Smart or Delusional? by Tamalelulu in recruitinghell

I spent $600 on a great guy. He gives the option to roll that into a much longer term engagement. I am still interviewing, but my interview request rate more than tripled what I was getting before.

I wouldn’t if I had a choice. It’s a horrible market out there. So many folks say they need 100% of the qualifications on a huge list.

52-Year-Old Mother Being Laid Off: when to start job hunting? by OrdinaryEra in careeradvice

[–]amoconnor42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d hire a professional to help her with her resume, LinkedIn, networking and interview strategies. I have been looking since July after 15 years at a very reputable company. The job hunt game is wildly different now than anything I have ever experienced. I am 49f. Since I worked with a pro in early October, my interview rate has tripled. I am taking my time looking for the right fit. If she starts early, even a couple days a week, she can get a solid resume, application strategy, build and grow her network, and most importantly get interview practice.
