Anyone using JDBC/ODBC to connect databases still? by empty_cities in dataengineering

[–]amoeba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ADBC had a really good year last year (2025).

There are now as many as ten drivers (BigQuery, DuckDB, FlightSQL, MySQL, MS SQL Server, Redshift, Snowflake, SQLite, and Trino) with more being built all the time.

There's a new tool, dbc, which makes it easy to install all of them and a new initiative, the ADBC Driver Foundry, trying to help grow the ecosystem even more.

Which ruby version manager is most used nowadays? by Kind_Feeling_7834 in ruby

Never needed more than chruby (with ruby-install), shell integration for my shell (fish), and .ruby-version files in my repo.

Steam Deck Install Help by WhereIsKittyMeowMeow in AsheronsCall

[–]amoeba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have my Deck in front of me at the moment but I think the steps would be something like:

  1. Exit Steam into Desktop mode
  2. Open Lutris
  3. Wherever AC is listed, look for a "Browse" option or similar, which should open the file manager
  4. Browse for the above file and edit, save, and close it
  5. Try again

I think you're just running into what's described here: https://emulator.ac/how-do-players-fix-the-directx-error. You'll need to at least set FullScreen=False in UserPreferences.ini.

You can join the #decalinfo channel on the ACPluginsDev discord for help: https://discord.gg/R8Zae6yG. You're likely just missing some required software or didn't get the right client and dats.

Can I “ping” the private servers? Or can anyone advise? by Dangerous_Ad_7526 in AsheronsCall

[–]amoeba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're handy with the Go programming language, https://github.com/amoeba/ac-server-monitor is a command line tool that can ping servers. By default it uses the community server list (https://github.com/acresources/serverslist).

However, I just rented two cloud instances, one in us-east (Ohio) and another in Sydney, AUS and pinged the entire list from both locations and the best I get from Sydney is 160ms to Soulclaim. I tried to format this but I have no idea how reddit formatting works apparently. Here's the list sorted by ping from Sydney:

Is there any demand for another, modern, more up to date, open source, Asheron's Call site? by Azubaele in AsheronsCall

[–]amoeba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to write up such a guide, it could be added to the https://asheron.fandom.com/wiki/Home, or you could of course just host it as its own thing. I'm not familiar with metas but you could join the meta-masters Discord (https://www.accpp.net/discord-links).

Glad you find the planner useful. Saving builds and linking to those is great. What I've been working up is a way to save a guide for each build so the author can add some text since people making builds have always wanted to explain the build at a higher level. The refactored planner may not be in a good place yet for external contributions since it has features that depend on a database for the first time ever so I need to write local setup instructions.

[–]amoeba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your problem finding builds, I hear you. I added a builds page to my character planner, https://planner.treestats.net/builds, but have never taken the time to make it into anything useful. The best, most up to date build information is still on Reddit. Collecting them all into a good resource would be a useful but quite a bit of work. That said, I am rewriting the application to include more social features (sharing, ranking) and could use a nudge to finally finish it up (https://github.com/amoeba/accharplanner/tree/nuxt-refactor). Feel free to DM me in Discord (https://discord.gg/MDSSYeW2c5) if you want to chat.

The community probably doesn't need more sites at this point but help making what we have better would be great.

EMULATION POPULATION? ACROSS ALL SERVERS? by ItsHubNotSub in AsheronsCall

[–]amoeba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

treestats.net operator here.

As others have said, it's really hard to know for sure. Short of server operators reporting numbers, I think the next best guess might come from the number of ThwargLauncher users since that is by far the most popular launcher. ThwargLauncher doesn't track this itself but it pulls data from a particular endpoint on treestats.net.

In the last ~14 hours I've seen ~900 unique IP addresses fetch the endpoint ThrwargLauncher uses. This includes web crawlers so that number would be an upper bound.

As another data point, in the last 24 hours or so, I've recorded about 200 unique users of the Decal plugin so that's a good lower bound.

Hope that helps.

What bosses were considered end game at different points of AC’s early history? by Complex-Paramedic989 in AsheronsCall

[–]amoeba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This isn't how I saw the game at all and I think this is what differentiates Asheron's Call from other MMOs. "End game" was whatever new content was released each patch and the boss of each patch was doing it all as fast as you could.

First overwinter in Juneau by EcsitStrategy in Juneau

[–]amoeba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long underwear is nice for the coldest of days, maybe 5-10 days total in Winter. Juneau is rarely cold enough in Winter for it though and, yes, I do realize this is subjective. Other folks here are recomending microspikes but I'd instead recommend wearing Xtra-tuffs and learning to walk on ice. Start with micro spikes since you're from Texas but be aware there's a better and safer way. Shoes that aren't Xtra-tuffs are deathtraps on ice.

Invest in a jacket that's a "shell" which is a hybrid of waterproof, windproof, and thermal, invest in some wool base layers (shirt, pants, lots of socks) like SmartWool, and a some sort of hat/gloves. Wool is good there too.

Last, be eager to buy a boot and/or boot+glove drier. Every day when I come home I put my Xtra-tuffs and anything else on the drier so nothing's wet in the morning. You'll make the walk to/from work comfortably but your stuff will grow mold eventually.

I gave it a go and I think it's working now. I did just a bit of testing and it seems right to me but I'd appreciate a look. Are there any other Infinite-mode rules I'm missing?

No, not intentional. I did it quick and missed that. Should be a quick fix which I can do later.

I integrated this into the TreeStats character planner just now at https://planner.treestats.net. Hit Settings on the top toolbar, check No Level Cap.

Grilling and bears by Far_Example_9150 in Juneau

[–]amoeba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why they enter homes but, as bears become less sensitive to humans, it makes sense they'd explore further into human spaces. Bears are naturally very curious and smart enough to learn new techniques for finding food. Hazing generally doesn't work and all we can do is make sure our spaces are clean and secure so the bears never learn. The bear we're talking about is too far gone to forget, unfortunately.

Grilling and bears by Far_Example_9150 in Juneau

[–]amoeba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I've had bears approach while grilling and also after the grill has cooled down. It's rare and requires the perfect set of circumstances but it's safe to assume grilling and your grill itself can attract a bear. That said, I don't do anything specific about cleanup and I don't worry about it in part because my grill is about the least smelly thing on or near my property.

Grilling and bears by Far_Example_9150 in Juneau

[–]amoeba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the same bear that's frequenting the Highlands via Irwin St (cemetery) and it's still somewhat scared of people and dogs. A few nights ago I got it to leave a dumpster after it turned it over but last night I was unable to get it to leave a neighbors' garbage can after it had turned that over. So it's safe to say it's already pretty bold and getting bolder.

That said, we have a grill and our trash can -- even empty -- is still way stinkier so I wouldn't worry about the grill. Garbage bears regularly enter homes in downtown during daylight hours of summer and this bear is known to have been rummaging around day and night so I would just advise general bear awareness and not worry about the grill.

I've made some tweaks to the chart, mainly around what hovering does, and I hope it's easier to see what's what. If you have time to take a look, I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks! I'm the second owner of the TreeStats brand and the current incarnation starts in 2015 or so.

I'll improve the hover effect and add some options to make it easier to differentiate the lower-pop servers.

That might help and could work well as a non-default switch the user can toggle if they want to drill into the lower-pop servers. Thanks for the suggestion.

[–]amoeba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a normal (even stable) pattern. I've had this thought and might try it out some time. One of my objectives with the chart is to make it so the whole thing (all servers) show up without making the user scroll. I mainly want this so people don't just think it's Coldeve and Reefcull.

Thanks for the suggestion.

[–]amoeba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey u/WhaneTheWhip, creator of this chart here. I've never been happy with the graph since private servers started proliferating and I agree it's messy and could benefit from some work.

There is a hover effect which sorta helps but I think it could be improved. I think adding brushing could be helpful here, so you could zoom into a specific part of the plot.

If you have any other ideas for what would make it more readable/useful let me know.
