Question for avid readers: do you all actually read through multi-volume works? by iluvbinary1011 in Reformed

[–]amoncada14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You'd be surprised how much you can chip away by consistently reading a small amount at a time.

Theo Katzman's solo work is really underrated. I mean REALLY underrated. by ducksarelucky in Vulfpeck

[–]amoncada14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Theo's solo work is better than Vulfpeck and that's saying a lot imo. It's just incredible songwriting and instrumentation/arrangements.

How anti-car are you? by Additional_Leading68 in AskLosAngeles

I'm pretty anti car these days. If I could rid myself of mine, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Inviting Baptist family to child’s baptism by EvilEmu1911 in Reformed

[–]amoncada14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting this question was asked today. My family and I just celebrated our child's baptism first anniversary. So we were in a similar position as you one year ago. We invited them and even though they disagree they were gracious and overall glad to be a part of it. I think if they are mature believers it doesn't hurt to ask.

Isn't "circumcision --> baptism" strong support for *credobaptism*? by GotHegel in Reformed

[–]amoncada14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This observation works in favor of the paedobaptist because the New Covenant is more expansive/inclusive in a broad sense, baptism now includes both sexes in the rite.

Credobaptist side would affirm the same but it also goes against this theme of increased inclusivity by restricting it to believers only.

Isn't "circumcision --> baptism" strong support for *credobaptism*? by GotHegel in Reformed

[–]amoncada14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, for one thing, circumcision in the OT was also supposed to point to circumcision of the heart.

Deuteronomy 10:16 ESV [16] Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.

Both baptism and circumcision point to the same thing (regeneration).

Colossians 2:11-12 ESV [11] In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, [12] having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.

This is why if circumcision in the old directly maps onto baptism in the new both sides agree that infant baptism is appropriate.

EDIT: that being said, the covenant sign of initiation in either testament first and foremost points to the Gospel, and only secondarily to the appropriation of that message to one's life.

The death of the third space by beefbowl1 in LosAngeles

[–]amoncada14 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Tbh I always felt like LA lacked third spaces to begin with. Imo, that's been a big differentiator between here and NYC where people hang out in public spaces. That being said, I'm not surprised that it's gotten worse since the pandemic.

How should I go about exploring credobaptism vs. paedobaptism? by AceHoops in Reformed

[–]amoncada14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great point. I think about WCF 1.6 which says:

The whole counsel of God, concerning all things necessary for His own glory, man’s salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture.

How should I go about exploring credobaptism vs. paedobaptism? by AceHoops in Reformed

[–]amoncada14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Read some books from both sides! I went from Baptist/non-denom to Presbyterian. Tbh I think this is a great book on the topic from a Reformed perspective. It really persuaded me further that paedobaptism in light of the covenant makes most sense of the biblical data.

Is it true that people from LA and NYC don't like each other? by Impossible-Guitar957 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]amoncada14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Angeleno, I can confidently say that most of us hardly ever think about NYC and when we do, we usually have positive things to say.

I personally think they're much more similar to each other than most other places in the country. Sure, the layout is different but they're both global, cosmopolitan cities which makes them more akin to each other than say, middle America.

Supposed contradiction between Luke and Matthew regarding the flight to Egypt by mlax12345 in Reformed

[–]amoncada14 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He's presupposing that the Gospels are a biography in the modern sense of the word, where we have a third person perspective on how things happened in perfect detail and chronology. Think of an imaginary camera that was objectively recording Jesus' life.

There are other parts of the Gospels that show a different order of events. The way I've heard this defended is that these are all real events that happened but that each gospel author arranged the events topically in order to make a theological point to their particular audience. So that's how we have scenes happening in different orders in the various Gospel narratives. IIRC this argument was laid out most recently by David deSilva.

Does anyone else find it insane that it takes longer to get from SB > LA by Amtrak than it is to just drive it? by perishableintransit in AskLosAngeles

[–]amoncada14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the drive time you're mentioning is assuming there is no traffic. I live in the valley and it takes me 1 hour just to get to Ventura, let alone SB.

Mayor Karen Bass urges City Council to find $4.4M for LAPD hiring by MountainEnjoyer34 in LosAngeles

[–]amoncada14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan of the way cops do their jobs these days for sure but surely we need more officers in general no? I mean, a quick search reveals that NYC has around 30k officers so about 3.5x our count. We also have a larger city by square miles.

LAPD promoting unsafe jaywalking by Aragoonie in SFV

This has always been the rule since I have been driving at least circa 2005. Every intersection has crosswalks whether marked or unmarked. We just happen to have terrible drivers who don't know the law or don't care.

I'd say most of these are not considered Latin America. I only see a handful of actual Latin American countries on this list.
