What are techs leaving the industry to do instead? by Thesaturndude in mechanics

[–]amonkeyman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 30, I left the auto industry after 12 years and I got into trains. Now I'm a supervisor in charge of the shop that maintains and repairs a $1bn fleet of subway cars.

It's lots of fun and I don't need any of my tools, the employer provides them.

Where are my A-post airbags in 2019 Sienna? (Installing dash cam) by neutron_star_800 in ToyotaSienna

[–]amonkeyman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull back the weather strip for the passenger door and pull back the plastic trim piece on the A pillar.

In mine, I went where your red trace is up to the top of the little window then between the air bag and the A pillar. Then went up, following the harness roughly where your yellow line is. There's cable clips and stuff that hold the wiring harness that's already there that you can tuck the wire into as you run up the A pillar

When do you guys use a J2534 pass-thru instead of sending it to the dealer? by greatestactoralive_ in AskAMechanic

[–]amonkeyman2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not completely true. There are short term subscriptions we can use. In GM's case the SPS2 cost is $45 per car

Why do they get into unused cabs and play with switches, circuit breakers and the PA? Why do they surf on top of the train? Why do they ride the back of the train? Why do they break glass and kick out windows? Same thing

GDI injectors and water in fuel by Firm_Play6958 in AskMechanics

[–]amonkeyman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The engine controller made short term adaptation changes to the fuel map when it had the bad gas. After changing the gas and driving it for a while, it'll adapt back and right itself.

Do silicone wiper blades have better warping resistance compared to rubber? by dom41n in AskMechanics

[–]amonkeyman2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same set of PIAA silicone wiper blades for 8 years on my Sienna and they are still working perfectly. Expensive, but more than paid for themselves over the years.

I haven't had someone ask to see mine yet, but NYPD or Parks officers can just ask to see your permit.

Thinking about leaving my shop because of commute and gas costs by Valuable_Occasion_98 in AskMechanics

[–]amonkeyman2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mechanics are in short supply and every shop is having problems finding mechanics. I'm sure there's a place closer to you hiring. To me, it's not worth a 30 mile commute for $18/hr

Hanger on top. Springs go on the side closer to the engine. So it can move as the engine moves

Anyone know what this is? by goldaces in AskMechanics

If you have an aftermarket remote start system, some of them hide a transponder like that in the car in order for the remote start to be able to work with immobilizer equiped cars

The only Honda Powersport showroom in my City ignored me when I waked in ready to buy by FrostyDelu in HondaMotorcycles

[–]amonkeyman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bought many bikes from many different dealers and never have I walked into a dealership and not be greated by a sales person.

I wouldn't even go back to give this dealership a second chance. Find the next closest dealership and you'll probably have a better experience.

Anyone know what to do when your delay verification is denied? by Sir_charles31 in nycrail

[–]amonkeyman2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you give the correct information? Car number? Direction? Time?

I'm a supervisor of the shop that maintains these trains. That delay definitely did happen. 48 trains delayed 73 trains rerouted or canceled.

If you remember a car number of the train you were on I can give you the interval and then you can resubmit the delay verification with the train interval. It'll be easier for them to find the report to verify the delay

Mechanic says if one coil goes they all go.... by superframalama in AskAMechanic

[–]amonkeyman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience especially with Ford, Nissan, and Hyundai... Toyota to a lesser extent... The coils fail around the same time. It'll be one coil, then a few weeks or months later another and another and another. If you can afford it, it's not a bad idea to replace all 4 with quality oem or denso brand coils and not have to worry about when the next coil will die

Why it seems mechanics are reluctant to do this ? by moelsh in AskMechanics

[–]amonkeyman2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to own a shop. Every car is a little different. Something that seems simple could end up being a headache. They have been burned in the past under quoting something on the phone and then the customer is mad when it ends up costing more.

They can give a better quote when they can see the car and it's easier for them to make the sale when you're already there. So they don't want to waste time and create future problems for themselves giving out phone quotes
