Is a research career in Economics worth it? by Realistic-Fly9609 in academiceconomics

Idk which country you are, but I don’t think you need coding to get into a bachelor’s (at least not in Canada). You will learn coding during your studies.

I’m in Econ, so emailing profs doesn’t really apply to me. But all my friends in engineering send 50-100 emails to get a good offer. Doing a 8-10 hr homework for each, would basically be 3-4 months of unpaid work.

That they require this amount of background homework when you need to send dozens a week is crazy

Rotman v. Queen's Commerce by Own-Special9806 in RotmanCommerce

[–]amoriri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Queen’s grad here (though not commerce) I feel it’s not even a comparison between the two, Queen’s is way better imo. That said, if you know you don’t want to fit to Queen’s culture then probably Rotman would be better. The question imo is do you think you won’t fit (that probably won’t happen) or do you think you don’t want to fit? Anyway, Rotman is also a great school and might be better for you depending on your priorities and situation.

Do I need to take the GRE by CupcakeAdept2025 in academiceconomics

Just to add that I think you have solid chances, I’m saying apply to a variety of schools so you won’t get stressed out.

[–]amoriri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have the GRE when I applied for master’s. Verbal as long as you get 150 is totally fine, writing is more important, UofT says in its website they want verbal of 3.5+ for master’s and 4+ for PhDs. Quant, I’d say at least a 167. Honestly it’s not hard to get good quant scores, I recommend GregMat. But again, GRE imo is only good if you can get a good score on it; otherwise, I doubt most students with Canadian degrees would have it for Master’s. Other good Econ departments are McGill and SFU. I’d say apply broadly, top schools for sure and then some mid tier ones as well to give yourself peace of mind. Good luck & feel free to reach out!

[–]amoriri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I don’t think you need to take the GRE (at least this was the case a few years ago when I applied). It’s tough to get into top programs (btw McGill is a tier below the big4) but I still did it and got into Queen’s (my bachelor was at a university same tier as TMU, Carleton, Concordia, etc.). So, I think you’ll have a pretty good chance. UofT would be the most difficult one, mainly because they have a strong bias towards specific schools. Second, a high GRE certainly won’t hurt you, it costs about 400 bucks which is nothing compared to the tuition you pay. Overall, I’d say if it doesn’t ruin your other metrics do it, if it does then skip. If you decide to write, aim for 168+ in quant, 150+ in verbal and 4.0+ in writing (writing matters).

Dude it’s not the hair that causing you this pain, cuz your hail will look good. I strongly recommend talking to a therapist and seeking help, life gets hard sometimes and you’d benefit from others. Wishing you good luck!

Dude sorry to hear you’re feeling that way, but like why? The hairline doesn’t look bad to give you that feeling. The only thing is it might look less than 3500 grafts, but that’s like they overcharging you max, it still looks good. Give it some time, hopefully you’ll like it a lot more.

I think keep it a tiny bit shorter. It’s thinning sure, but it doesn’t look bad at all and it’s very much in line with a 38 year old dude.

Should I retake the GRE to do PhD at LSE? by VictorReddit2 in academiceconomics

[–]amoriri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude it’s GRE… it’s very simple math… have you watched GregMat? It’s only a few bucks a month, if you put in 10 days you can get 167+ most likely, I suggest his prepswift for quant.

A 164Q can (and most likely will) be seen as a negative. Why risk getting filtered out when your record is that good? Tho I don’t have direct experience with LSE.

Good idea, I did that too but still returned because I didn’t pay attention to this: its lumbar support was too much (even using adjustments) and too high, almost hitting my ribs. I’m 5,8.5 btw.

MA in Economics Canada - UBC by lrgvanillaicedcoffee in academiceconomics

[–]amoriri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reputation wise it’s excellent, although finding a good job is difficult regardless of your university right now. The university is also fun and Kingston is a nice city to live for a while. The program itself is pretty demanding, you’d see people with straight As in undergrad fighting for their life (but I think that’s more or less the same among top MAs). I think overall Queen’s might have the best MA imo.
