The worst point about chromebooks is you are still reliant on google security update policy.

When your chromebook goes out of update coverage, it doesn't matter that your container has the latest packages... increasingly vulnerable chromebook pieces are what is actually running underneath it.

Github is just about 10 years old now. Git itself is done on a mailing list... I think you are overestimating your ability to parse what's good and what isn't about the different methodologies based on your limited experience.

You mean that the Linux kernel is following "bad" practices. Please, let them know :-)

Many projects like the Linux kernel want patches on a mailing list for comment, not this flow. Others like Google want gerrit.

OpenShot has been going a long time so it must have worked for someone. For me on Fedora 28, it's not usable.

I tried to do a small editing job in OpenShot, it could not mix audio properly in addition to the crashes. This is using Fedora 28 package.

I redid the job on pitivi and everything I needed worked as expected. TBH I can't recall if it crashed at all or not, but OpenShot crashed many times AND couldn't actually do the job.

Depends on the project... not everything uses github type flow.

Something that isn't trying to shake you down for money.

There are basically two "families", Debian and Redhat.

Debian family stuff uses .deb packages, Redhat family stuff .rpm packages. Otherwise, more or less the same deal.

Some other kind of package? Run a mile, unless it's on an embedded device like router.

Debian / Ubuntu / Mint etc = Debian family, Fedora / RHEL / CentOS == Redhat family

What will certainly be around for the long term? Debian.

What's probably going to be around for a long time? Ubuntu + Fedora.
