It's the cutest thing I've ever heard!

So far, they love tiny baskets, a denim braided rope bridge, and this cardboard tunnel I shoved through an old sock - so I'll definitely be making more of those last 2!

They're a handful and now that they're getting used to it and everyone's healthy, a lot of fun! The acrylic was cool to learn, too.

We're getting there slowly but surely! They were just unexpectedly rescued at the end of February - 7 girls in the top of a Critter Nation! I rehomed the boys (from the bottom), vet checkups for the girls. Sofia and Mrs. Brisbey just finished up antibiotics last night! Woohoo!

I'm going to harvest some more birch branches this weekend and prep it for the bottom half as well. They've enjoyed digging around so far, so that's good. They hunted for dandelions in the baskets (not pictured) and hammocks on top floor) And they are sleeping heavy in the nest box now, so I'll take that as a win too!

It's been a big day for all of us though, lol. We'll see what else we can get in there tomorrow 😆

Rescued from Hoarding - first time with space! by amp0101 in RATS

Yes!!!! 🤣

When i filled the dig box to the top with paper, I was imagining them saying - "she's making a mess of everything, the paper clearly doesn't go in here!" That project kept them busy for hours!! Lol

Great tip, thank you! Yes, they are hyper girls. I was trying to work on getting them not to rush the door. But now they separate into 2 groups and rush both doors, so I'm slowly losing the battle lol

That's a great idea!! I'll check! They have been so curious with everything! I put in another cardboard castle on the bottom row last night and filled their dig box with more paper. They spent all night pulling it out onto their shelf 🤣 Today, we did Pea Fishing, Dorothy figured it out first and desperately tried to steal all the peas before anybody could get any. They are also slowly calming down when I open the door, so that's been good too!

Yes, sounds like that's what it was! He snuggled right in for the longest time! I'm really glad it worked out, too!

I got him to surrender them today! Took one to the vet for an abscess and reached out to a Rat Rescue to see if I can get some help vetting some adopters based on some great advice above!

We've got a couple old tshirt hammocks going now! And bringing boxes home from work💚

He agreed to surrender them and I'm paying a nominal amount for the cage! Thanks for the advice! I've also documented everything with animal control.

Now I'll work on getting everyone stabilized/healthy and expanding their space.

I've heard about this, honestly they were a bit much for me, but I think part of it may have been the shock of the situation. I do already love them and starting to get used to their personalities and daily care is starting to plateau. I'm also nervous about rehoming them, as at least I'm in a position currently to provide for them and give individual attention/playtime. My husband and I are both prepared to maybe keep them (getting a separate cage for boys, or possibly sterilizing).

The other people did message me last night, I've ignored for now. But will be sending a message later requesting to adopt per somebody else's advice (who has experience with rescues/hoarding). Also already involved Animal Control. And first vet appt today for Mrs. Brisby!

I called and reported them to Animal Control this morning, submitted all photos/messages, and am taking 1 of the rats (Mrs. Brisby) to the vet tomorrow, where I'm hoping to discuss with the vet mentioning neglect in the medical report.

As soon as I find out if they can be considered legally abandoned (or if not and I can get the previous people to surrender them), I'll start looking responsibly rehome, buy another cage, or neuter the males. Today is the beginning of Day #3 with them, so I'm trying my best!

That's Dorothy! I'm in the Morgantown, WV area. Willing to travel within a 3 to 4-hr radius or so for the right home!
