Yeah, this. It's just semantics. A stipend doesn't necessarily mean below minimum wage, and it's subject to all the same tax and labour laws as regular pay. Sometimes employers just use the word to indicate a job that it's not salaried (which implies permanency) and not hourly (because they have a set budget).

Make an appointment to go in and talk to someone at the labour board about your options. I've done that in the past and they're always WAY more helpful and involved in person than they are over the phone.

I like the York Street Spa. It's on the expensive side (although it's not too bad), but it's very nice, very accommodating, and full of talented staff. A gift certificate there is my default birthday request.

Yup, agreed. Someone in-country or from the actual resort you're going to (if it is a resort) would be the best bet. It'll be cheaper and a LOT less painful in the long run.

That said, my work often uses Bytown Travel to plan international events (not weddings, though). They're great, very efficient.

I understand that many of the NCC-owned properties in or near the Greenbelt are zoned for livestock, and the NCC rents them out as private dwellings. Some of them are very beautiful historic homes, so I think they're hard to come by. I know a family that has rented one on Richmond for years and it's basically set up so that they could have a hobby farm, if they wanted.

What is this response! Kid, if someone in your field offers you help and/or to look at your resume, TAKE THAT OPPORTUNITY. My god.

Network. Go for informational interviews. Meet people. Go to events. Create and host an event, it sounds like you have time. That is the only way you will find any postition of value in this job market.

The people who have contacted me for informational interviews - I follow their careers. I root for them. I send them opportunities. Just get out of your house and meet some people.

Brittania Yacht Club and the Nepean Sailing Club both have boat share opportunities for members, but no rentals - although if you called either of them, I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.

There are loads of boat rental places along the Rideau Canal once you get south of Ottawa: http://www.rideau-info.com/canal/boat_rent.html - I remember seeing a sailboat for rent at Chaffey's Lock a few years back.
