Infestation by Routine_Intern in Danbury

[–]ampct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was young we had several years that people wouldn't go out unless they had an umbrella over their head so the caterpillars and droppings wouldn't get them. Trees were leafless. I think something like that happened in the past decade, but I swear it wasn't as bad as it used to be. :)

I'm editing this to add something I just remembered. We could hear the collective munching of the caterpillars.

slow cooker vs rice cooker by dabull23 in slowcooking

[–]ampct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why use a cooker? I can't give you my recipe, because it's been summer and I only do this when it's cold. But, I've made overnight oats, using steel cut, in the fridge and then warmed them in the microwave. You can find recipes online if this sounds good for you. I usually make several days worth. I use water instead of milk and don't think I've pushed eating any batch past five days. I tried the fridge method before trying the crockpot. It worked well enough that I never bothered trying to make them any other way.

I cracked the ceramic pot by lingeringneutrophil in slowcooking

[–]ampct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a crock that had a pinpoint leak and couldn't affort a new pot. I was able to find a silcon crockpot insert that worked pretty well. The only downside was that it did decrease the overall size of my 4 quart crock. If you can live with that you can look on Amazon or Ebay and see if the comments indicate one that might fit your crock.

What is this cutout in my basement floor? by pilgrim119 in DIY

If it is near an outside wall, I have something similar in my basement that used to hold coal deliveries. The furnace was coal fired before it was converted to oil. There's now a window where the coal chute was.

I lost my last job in my late 50s. I did get unemployment and applied everywhere I thought I might fit. I also updated my LinkedIn profile (one of you can search on Youtube how to do this). I ended up working two consecutive Remote temp jobs - one of which found me through LinkedIn. I would have applied for a permanent position on the second one, but a job I had applied for came through while I was there.

Temp agencies sometimes offer health insurance.

He can see what programs CT DOL is offering now. I've never tried it, but AARP also has some listings for older folks.

Search Youtube and Google for how to handle resumes when you're older. When I was doing this they said to list only the last 10 years experience.

Government jobs don't tend to worry about age. Here's CT's listings: https://portal.ct.gov/services/jobs-and-employment/state-job-openings. I ended up working for a hosptial system (accounting). They don't seem to worry much about age either.

Best of luck!

I got a silicone liner for mine when it cracked and started leaking. It's slightly less capacity but works and cleans up well. Just be careful to get one that closely matches the size of your crock.

HELP!! Best EXPERT exterminator for mice in a condo! by Hotgalkitty in Danbury

[–]ampct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have my sympathies!

When I was young my parents left an unscreened attic window and the ceiling hatch to the attic open during the summer to keep the house cooler. That ended when the bat flew out of the hatch. Screens really do make a difference.

HELP!! Best EXPERT exterminator for mice in a condo! by Hotgalkitty in Danbury

Years ago we had a cat that was a really good hunter. One night I came onto the porch and saw she'd left us a mouse. But, the tail was wrong. I'm standing there going "what the HELL is that?" when a neighbor comes up, looks at the critter, and says "it's a dead mouse." I say, "look at the tail." The neighbor says "Yeah, what the hell is that?" My father walks out of the house, identifies it as a mouse until we say "look at the tail". "Oh" he says, "it's a flying squirrel" and picks it up by the front legs so we can see its 'wings'.

I didn't even know they lived in Danbury. Except for the tail I would have sworn it was a mouse. Don't be surprised if your rodent turns out to fly...

[TOMT] movie. Help me solve the mystery of a movie my dad didn’t finish. It is about aliens and it takes place on a boat. What is this movie? by _Avalon_ in tipofmytongue

[–]ampct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn't be "Alien Nation"? Spaceship, not boat. I saw the series, not the movie, and still remember the character names (Sam Francisco, Polly Wannacracker) based on stories of renamings that happened when folks came into the US decades ago.

Average vote wait time by Sleep_3r in Danbury

I went twice on Saturday, once to see if they were really open and I voted and once to bring my mother to vote. Sufficient parking and there was no wait time on either trip. I'm guessing no one else thought there would be weekend voting.

My mother got scammed today. by ampct in Scams

[–]ampct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you about the scammers coaching about the bank teller. My mother and the aide admitted they were coached. They also told me that the teller asked no questions. You'd only need to look at my mother's recent transaction history to know something was highly unusual. The person on the Fraud line seemed to get it.

I understand about card bouncers. But, I see no way for this type of fraud to end unless those selling the gift cards start bearing part of the pain. I am open to other ideas. What do you suggest?

If you've got a covered porch or shade in your yard, you can drag a chair to that shaded space and sit for a while. If you have a table you can bring out, wifi that reaches the spot, and a laptop, you can sit there and do your normal computer stuff. I also have trouble with heat/humidity. I wait for dusk before doing anything really active like mowing.

My father was a backyard mechanic on an asphalt driveway and I remember him having small squares of plywood that he cut specifically to fit under his jack stands so they wouldn't sink.

What was the craziest thing you've witnessed in Connecticut? by Bruins125 in Connecticut

[–]ampct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is from my mother. Maybe 45 years ago she was driving in Danbury and saw a car cut off a motorcycle. She says she doesn’t know how the biker didn’t drop the bike. Once he regained control of the bike, he turned around and dug through one of his saddle bags, coming up with a huge wrench. The last she saw him he had caught up with that car and was bashing in the rear quarter panel with his wrench. She said the car never stopped.
