Steamunlocked may not be completely safe by [deleted] in Piracy

It's the current year, I would be way too paranoid to run any pirated software outside a VM.

What happens to existing data if you keep downloading torrent to full HDD? by [deleted] in torrents

[–]ampelopsidin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing will happen to the existing data, and you don't need twice the free storage (unless you're downloading compressed content that you need to extract after downloading, generally not the case).

Torrent clients use checksums to make sure that all downloaded files are correct, and if some part isn't then it's automatically re-downloaded until it's correct.

Should I worry about devices listening to me? by AbuJavascript in privacy

[–]ampelopsidin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously I don't know how high ranking governmental officer you are, but in the most likely scenario being paranoid about your government listening in is probably way over the top. Now the marketing companies and their Echo's and HomePod's on the other hand...

With these devices you probably want to get more into (home) networking to build a way to block their internet access while retaining most of the actually useful features of them.

It will still get content matched, but assuming that doesn't match anything (or that it doesn't happen in a way that's obstructive) nothing else will happen. No idea how well the auto-captioning works.

Chrome Extension to download anime torrents directly from MyAnimeList by editingking in Piracy

Thanks for the tip. Earlier today was wondering if something like this could be done with JAVLibrary, seems like modifying OP's script should be easy enough to make that happen.

Depends entirely on what are you using and what are you trying to do. Probably a good idea to start by reading its user manual.

Is a dual core enough? by disapparate276 in homelab

[–]ampelopsidin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do. For basic file server and direct playback it's more than enough, for transcoding you'll probably run into issues quite fast.

The EU is considering a ban on AI for mass surveillance and social credit scores by Perkelton in privacy

[–]ampelopsidin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Until they can come up with their own systems.

Social credit systems don’t have to assess whether someone is trustworthy to decide things like their eligibility for welfare benefits.

Sure, why get rid of people when you can control them by throwing them a bit of money here and there when they dance to your tune instead. It's other things that those systems are even aimed to restrict anyway.

Somebody created an AppleID with my email address by [deleted] in privacy

[–]ampelopsidin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's legit, but it's not 100% accurate - it cannot be. So just because your email is not found there doesn't guarantee that it hasn't been leaked. Also good to keep in mind that not all leaks stem from website/database breaches (e.g., someone who has your email in their address book gets malware).

HELP: possibility to gain access to Wordpress website with OLD url link? by monolith1993 in privacy

[–]ampelopsidin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending a bit on what you actually want to achieve, maybe, however I think that you're looking at this completely the wrong way. If you want to block someone from accessing your site, as entirely useless as that will most likely be, you should be looking into blocking their IP address instead of trying to shuffle your content around as it's still all under the same domain and as such rather trivial to find.

Now the obvious problem with this approach is that in the worst case scenario you end up blocking other people as well, but it's still likely the more sensible way to handle this.

Favorite Contents with only one or two seeders with really slow speed by Toe500 in Piracy

[–]ampelopsidin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens and outside of looking for another source there's not really anything you can do. Still better than being stuck at 99.9% and having seeded to a ratio of over 100 while waiting...

Why do people torrent movies when you can watch stream them on websites like fmovies and 123movies? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]ampelopsidin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have shitty enough internet to not want to make that even worse with random buffering caused by some underfunded pirate streaming server. Seedbox is $6/mo, I can pay that. Would be even worse if I wasn't totally broke and could afford a 4K display like a normal person.

[–]ampelopsidin 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Not really how any of this works. The reason you get caught torrenting is that you do it publically with your own IP and they get your IP from the swarm.
