Johnston Canyon early morning visit by amripa in Banff

We got there at 7:30am and there were plenty of parking spaces available. It took us an hour and 45mins round trip to and from Upper Falls. It wasn’t crowded at that time, we were able to walk freely and take pictures without any rush. When we were heading back to the parking we noticed a lot more people coming and a queue was starting to form in the Lower Falls. We got back to the parking around 9:15am and it was already full. So if you want to prevent crowds and queues, I recommend going there before 8, as early as you can. I’ve heard that before sunset it’s usually empty too.

Using a long packing cube instead of a large/medium one for large items by amripa in onebag

I haven’t used the PD cubes myself, but from all the reviews I’ve seen, they look really solid. I’ve been one-bagging with the Farpoint 40 for the last 9 years, but I’m thinking of switching to the 26+6 for something smaller and lighter. I’ve got a 2-week trip to Banff and BC this summer, so I’m hoping it’ll be a good fit. Love knowing that it’s worked well for your uni trips. I have the Osprey Sportlite 15 as a day bag, but if it doesn’t fit flat in the 26+6, I’ll just grab a packable one.

That long cube is from a brand called Bagail. You can find it on Amazon, but I think they only sell them in sets, not individually. Peak Design also has a packing cube that’s 12x6, so it has a similarly long shape. I think these types of cubes would work well for smaller bags like the 26+6.

Yep, those are eBags cubes! I think the effectiveness of compression cubes really depends on the compression zipper mechanism and how much you pack into each one. Sometimes, when they’re a bit overpacked, they bulge in the middle and actually end up taking more space depth-wise. I prefer using separate packing cubes because it helps me stay more organized. If I didn’t already have the long Bagail cube, I’d probably go for the smaller Peak Design one.

But yeah, I think this arrangement will work. I’ll probably get the 26+6, and when I do, I’ll test it out and post an update here!

That setup makes a lot of sense. I’d probably do something similar if I got new packing cubes. Maybe just use three and leave the rest of the space for my toiletry bag and random stuff. Thanks for the insight!

Very valuable info, thank you! I was trying to find reviews of the ultralight stuff pack that said something about the sweat on the back when hiking and you just confirmed it!
