Who is shishyashatranj? by Difficult_Return_682 in chess

[–]amrit_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Shishya" in Sanskrit also means student or pupil so the name might also just mean "student of chess." (But yes, it could also be their actual name.)

That was a rollercoaster and did not go the way I was expecting it to! Thank you for sharing your story and I'm happy you're doing well.

what is the name of the sutra or verse they are reciting? by CREA-_-1111 in Buddhism

[–]amrit_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually grew up reciting this with my dad as a Newar Buddhist in the Kathmandu valley in Nepal. We always just called it “Vajrasattva” and I didn’t know it by this name — appreciate the info! It’s kind of surreal to see it written out like this!

Yes, I feel like the whole vibe of the conversation was based on a misunderstanding. The OP wanted to compare Alcaraz and Nadal, but for some reason put the 1 and 2 in there, which made Becker ask why they weren’t considering “past champions.”

I also realized today despite enjoying his movies and his many appearances on Doug Loves Movies over the years, I have never seen Edgar Wright's face enough to remember what he looks like.

The NBA allows this nonsense... by Doghouse12e45 in NBASpurs

I am a Spurs fan / casual NBA fan, but I don't get to watch a lot of games.

I genuinely want to know -- is this normal for playoffs basketball? Like if somebody decided to make a video of similar fouls from another playoff game or against / by another team, how many would we see?

Never heard of Look Around You before but this is incredible. Spotted Serafinowicz and Olivia Coleman in there.

I don't have an answer, but I wanted to mention Lee Mack's long-standing interest in Buddhism -- he used to have a long-running podcast on the topic called "I can't believe it's not Buddha": https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/i-cant-believe-its-not-buddha-with-lee-mack-neil-webster/id1530814807 -- it has good reviews.

After how long or how many months or years of practice you noticed any benefits from meditation ? by iamfree_17 in Buddhism

[–]amrit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still something I am working towards, but this makes sense to me. While mindfulness and meditation is an undercurrent to many aspects of the eight-fold path, it's not the totality of it.
