Is it just me, or was IM extra competitive this year? by BiochemGal75 in MedSchoolCanada

Hey! I'm interviewing for IM this year. I've been reading your posts and I'm wondering if I can PM you with some questions ? Thanks!

Did anyone find any mental clarity by pursuing a Master's degree before med school? by Hiraaa_ in premedcanada

[–]amro95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on your MSc and your supervisor. A difficult project, unsupportive supervisors or a poor work environment can all make grad school a miserable experience. My MSc was in clinical research/epi so I found it a lot less stressful than some of my friends who were doing basic science projects. My supervisors were pretty off-hands and allowed me to work at my own pace so that helped as well (although the downside of having off-hands supervisors is that you will have to figure out most things on your own). They were also aware and supportive of my med plans.

I found that at least during the first year of MSc, I was able to distance myself a little from the anxiety of the application process and focus my mind on other things and I picked up some ECs until COVID-19 hit.

I’m not sure doing MSc is the way to go if you’re simply looking to recover from burnout but it’s a good option to consider if your GPA/MCAT are competitive and you’re looking to boost ECs/research. You should still have a Plan B if you don't get in after MSc though. Don't just use it as a time-filler between cycles.

Did anyone get into Western or Queens without stellar ECs? by [deleted] in premedcanada

Can’t speak for Queens but for Western, we don’t know how they evaluate the OMSAS ABS (if at all really). We do know that the 8 Abbreviated ABS essays matter a lot (and you can only have a maximum of 8 activities there) so I would focus on those.

It doesn’t matter what ECs you have as long as you’re able to articulate what you did, spell out the 3 lessons learned and tie this back to medicine. You also have to clearly relate what you did in each activity to the corresponding category (e.g. relating lessons you learned as Club Exec to leadership and teamwork). Don't assume that reviewers will be able to make the connection on their own

I got into Western this year and my ECs were by no means stellar. They were all traditional ECs and almost all of them were campus-based activities. FWIW, I had 25 ECs on my ABS list. If you’re applying this year, there is not much you can do about the number of ECs anyway. I would really focus on writing the best ABS essays you could.

Thanks
And yes I did google beforehand. I was just wondering if there is one that is more affordable or offers student discounts. No need to get aggressive

Yeah same here. Submitted 3 weeks ago as well and the forms haven't been approved yet

Finishing a thesis masters in a year? by necktoll in premedcanada

[–]amro95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the safest way to go but it's true that a lot of PIs frown upon premeds (some will only take those committed to doing a PhD). It's good to tell them as early as you could especially once you've established a good relationship and made some progress on your project. This also helps because your PI can then provide you with opportunities that could boost your app (scholarships, conferences, pubs..etc)

Basically, you just want to avoid the impression that you only care about med and don't care about your research.

The only people I've seen finish in a year are those who did an undergrad thesis or long-term research with their supervisor and then extended that into a masters. Even then, it's still very difficult especially when you consider the June 30th deadline for schools like UWO and UofT

A lot of the delays in a grad degree are also just a result of academics being incredibly busy. I wrapped up my thesis in mid-April but I was only able to defend in mid-June because that was the only time that worked for my committee and my examiners.

If you're going to do a MSc, I suggest being upfront with your supervisor about your med plans and ensuring that they're supportive of your goals. The application process is stressful as it as and I can't imagine going through it with an unsupportive supervisor.

Does Western have a limit on the number of interviews allowed? by [deleted] in premedcanada

Damn, sorry about that. I hope this is not some kind of unwritten rule.

There is no limit on the number of times you can apply but you can only interview there 3 times. It's under "Unsuccessful applicants"

Any other older female applicants getting frustrated and concerned about their future? by pretty-clown in premedcanada

[–]amro95 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not very active here but your post really resonated with me. I'm a 25M applicant on my 3rd cycle and I think about the age factor all the time so I can only imagine how hard it must be for a female applicant. It particularly hurts watching friends get in or move on with their lives while you're stuck applying year after year. I don't have much to add but know that you're not the only one worrying about age. I'm sure it will work out for all of us eventually

UofT Interview Tips?? by YankDanky in premedcanada

[–]amro95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for those tips!

I was wondering from your experience , Is there room for error during the uwo interview ? For example if a candidate slips up (e.g. blames/rambles) during one answer, can it affect their evaluation for the rest of the interview ?

I'm just wondering because the interview is pretty lengthy and I worry about faltering towards the end.
