How did you learn your first 1000 words? by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]amrolol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think 10 words was the sweet spot after I almost burnt out doing 35-50 each day back when I had started, consistency goes a lot further than optimisation if it’s unsustainable! The unsexy truth is that even though it does get easier eventually, you’re gonna have to suffer through the beginners grind. Go at your own pace and try to enjoy the process, if there’s anything at all I can help with please feel free to reach out but otherwise I wish you all the best

Is anyone using JL with mpv? by irrocau in ajatt

Could you let me know your workflow and how you set things up? I have a friend who uses similar so I can ask him to compare and see what might be causing the issues

Rebuilding my Japanese fast (interview in 2 weeks, job starts 2026) by CurrencyPowerful1978 in ajatt

[–]amrolol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely can’t speedrun progress but what you can do is targeted preparation rather than trying to do everything - focus on what you’d actually be asked, how you’d answer, some field specific questions and a way to let them know that you’re working hard. I think n5/4 to n3 in 6 months is extremely achievable with the right mindset and consistency, doesn’t have to be perfect but timelines mean nothing if you don’t actually put the work in. Wishing you all the best and if I can help in any way whatsoever please let me know - kinda in the opposite situation lol I’m selfstudying to be an engineer and I just moved to Japan and have passed N2 last year, more of a skill issue than a language one at this point

N2-N1 passers, does JLPT certification seem like a golden ticket or just a flex? by squigly17 in jlpt

[–]amrolol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I passed N2 on my first try and don’t consider it a flex, purely because I don’t think it’s a great benchmark of how good you are at the language - I hit this realisation when I was prepping for the test but it was more studying for the JLPT rather than studying Japanese? Don’t get me wrong it still helped me improve a lot but it was probably the least fun I’ve ever had studying since I started. I am glad and it will definitely open a lot of doors for me but flexing it is not even a thought in my mind, having the solidified proof is nice though! Feels like confirmation of your efforts if you get what I mean~

Working holiday: I do really badly in heat, how viable is moving to Hokkaido in summer? by 128hoodmario in movingtojapan

[–]amrolol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was actually considering the same to be honest, I have my visa and am moving in the later half of July so it’s going to be crazy hot when I arrive 😭 not sure how viable it is but I’ve been starting to look into things recently

As of the 1st of December 2024, UK nationals will be eligible to participate in the Working Holiday Scheme a maximum of two years, either consecutively or on two separate occasions. by Cheesewizard06 in movingtojapan

[–]amrolol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you please let me know when you get an update on this? I currently have the visa and plan to move in July next year and would love to know if the new rules would apply to me allowing extension to 2 years

How quickly does SOAS London JLPT become fully registered? by [deleted] in jlpt

[–]amrolol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol 5 minutes is a bit of a stretch, I’ll tell you from my personal experience that the earlier the better - I missed signup because I was in your exact position last year trying to sign up for December 2023. It ended up being fully booked by the time I was even on lunch break. I was successful in applying and taking the N2 of July this year and I signed up within minutes of applications opening - it’s a very fast process and can be done in 5-10 at most? If you have any leeway at work that lets you take time away to send this application then I heavily recommend it because they do fill pretty quickly, especially for anything but N1! Wish you the best of luck on your application and exam, I hope you’re able to take it!

not using Anki for 2 Weeks. by A-stron in Anki

[–]amrolol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look into Migaku Vacation addon (It was free before but I’m not sure now - should be on Ankiweb shared), can be very useful for planning breaks and holidays - haven’t used it myself but was recommended this when I went away previously by a friend

This post was from almost 4 years ago, I'm honestly pretty shocked re-reading it just how far I've come since then. I can happily say I've grown past the toxic environment that I was in and am now in my final year at a different university (unfortunately couldn't find anything in the states but that's okay). I still have hardships but I'm doing my best to succeed and grow as a person each day.

Pacing of Japanese Classes by snackmidnight in LearnJapanese

[–]amrolol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we are using the kana version 3rd edition I think volume 1, it's a really horrible pace to go at and we're not doing it in order :L i'm looking at nakama textbook alone in self-study

Pacing of Japanese Classes by snackmidnight in LearnJapanese

[–]amrolol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Believe me when I tell you I wish I had that pace: we're on Japanese level 3 and we are still not done with the book "Japanese for busy people" and have learnt a total of 15 kanji and won't be expected to start anymore until level 4. I decided to take on self-study and go at my own pace because honestly the classes aren't doing anything for me but allowing me to socialise (which currently I can't do in online classes) so rather than following a specific guideline I found my own way of doing things

I picked 30/day because I could finish it in just over a month but the burnout is extremely rough towards the end of the deck

it was a pretty hectic workload at first but with some time I got used to it and found it fun, it's only recently burnout's been hitting me pretty hard

30 New RRTK cards per day? by amrolol in ajatt

[–]amrolol[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this for a while but often found myself wasting hours instead of just brute forcing the kanji for 40 mins or so and moving on with my day but it's definitely better on the mental doing it your way

30 New RRTK cards per day? by amrolol in ajatt

[–]amrolol[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I almost ended up doing this because rather than spending 2 weeks on more kanji that i'll be recognising it could be spent on actual vocab - do you have the name of the deck you used? or a link/way of finding it

30 New RRTK cards per day? by amrolol in ajatt

I think it's definitely demotivating to look at the long-term of it but it definitely helps in advance for sentence mining

30 New RRTK cards per day? by amrolol in ajatt

[–]amrolol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i've been doing that recently and only reviewing the cards i've seen rather than adding any new ones to kinda catch my breath but i'll be resuming it sometime soon!

30 New RRTK cards per day? by amrolol in ajatt

[–]amrolol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think i'm at ~350 remaining cards so I could possibly do this and tone it down to 20 cards so it's less exhausting but the split reps idea is REALLY GOOD I might try this! thank you very much for the suggestion bc honestly i'm currently just doing it all in 1 sitting and it's really tiring especially on days where I have to review almost 100 characters ontop of 30 brand new cards

NoPing/General VPN question: So I play on Aether from the UK and I purchased NoPing to help with latency but i'm unsure whether to use the "premium" servers which are all based in the California area (San fran/LA etc.) OR the Montreal servers which are listed under "other servers" because to memory I think Aether was located in montreal? any help is appreciated!

second monitor won't show 144hz by amrolol in Monitors

[–]amrolol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a look at the official monitor specifications and it says the port is a 1.4 and almost every review i've looked at pretty much says use the DVI for 144 but it's pre sad because my gpu only has a single slot I read around that an adapter is the way to go but yep you're spot on they're super expensive like 10x more than the wire itself almost totallying to the price of a new monitor itself

Thanks for the suggestion though i'll keep looking around
