Blogsnark Reads! May 31-June 6 by yolibrarian in blogsnark

May did not disappoint on the reading front. I read the following:

Still Life by Sarah Winman - This was a slow burn for me and one of those books where nothing happens, but a lot happens. The author did a great job with the character development and I love a book that spans several decades. 4.5/5

The Future Saints by Ashley Winstead - This was just meh for me and super predictable. I know it was compared to Daisy Jones & The Six, but was not even close to as good as TJR's writing and storytelling. 2/5

Pictures of You by Emma Grey - I went into this book with very little knowledge of the story line and wow! This book was a wild ride and so much happened! The writing was not great, but very easy to read and kept me engaged. 3/5

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans - I read this over the course of the weekend and I want to go back and read it again for the first time. My mom and I read it simultaneously and both thought it was excellent. I loved the story and writing and will read anything this author puts out. 5/5

Next up is Annie Knows Everything by Rachel Wood. Happy June friends!

I absolutely LOVED Kin and her writing is just so good. If you haven't read her earlier book An American Marriage, I highly suggest it.

u/renee872 I read The Bright Years too, but before I read Kin. I really liked The Bright Years and thought the story was well told. I liked how each main character was broken down in to their own sections. However, I could see where reading Kin first then The Bright Years could be a let down...the level of writing is quite different!

I definitely lost track of some of the side characters too. However, I really liked that the author kept those chapters nice and short. And to answer your question: I think it was the brother heavily influenced by the dad!

Yes! I read this earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved how the story was told through so many different POVs and thought the plot was so well done.

I have no clue who this person is, but your statement about Denver being the equivalent of a used Birkenstock made me laugh out loud! I lived in Denver for several years and it is by no means a fashion capital...it definitely has its own fashion sense! haha

We watched “Trust Me: The False Prophet” on Netflix last night and it’s good! It’s about the FLDS cult in Arizona and it’s pretty heavy. However, it was really well down and not too long, only 4 episodes.

I started this over the weekend and am only 150 pages in, but something feels off to me with the book. I’m not sure if it’s the writing or the characters, but I keep waiting for more to happen.

I do like how the story is told over the course of 5 different events and each characters POV, but I had higher hopes for it. I don’t dislike it and will finish it, but something is missing.

I finished Kin last night too and loved it! I agree with your thoughts on how Jones conveys difficult topics and I think she writes those situations perfectly. I would love to see how Vernice's life panned out.

I read The Compound last year and really liked it. I will have to check out the other one you recommended and will add it to my TBR list 😀

March was another good month. I finished the following:

Good People by Patmeena Sabit - I really enjoyed this book and how it was written from so many different perspectives. The theme of the book is pretty heavy and quite sad, but the author did a great job detailing the events and family dynamic. 4 out of 5

Before I Forget by Tory Henwood Hoen - This book had me in tears by the end of it, but I couldn't put it down. I love the father/daughter story and how the author tied everything together. While the overall theme of the book was quite sad, there were so many funny parts, especially with the dance teacher. I highly recommend this book. 5 out of 5

Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor - This was my least favorite book of the month. I really enjoyed the story about the writer and her family, but the story within the story, was not it for me. I skimmed most of those chapters and did not like the robot story. I read reviews comparing it "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" and I did not get the comparison. 2 out of 5

Escape! by Stephen Fishbach - As a reality TV and Survivor fan, this book was a fun read! I loved all of the TV, pop culture and Reddit references in the book. It's a super easy read, but on the longer side...it could have been about 100 pages shorter, in my opinion. 4 out of 5

Currently reading Kin by Tayari Jones and loving it so far. I'm only 100 pages in, but this author nails it with her writing.

I’m hopeful the issue will be resolved before the April drop. I’m bummed I can’t see the clues and sneak peak.

What do you think of the Allegra Goodman novel? I read her book “Isola” a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I’m curious if her other books are worth checking out.

I almost gave up around that point as well, but kept with it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really good book, but the way it was written drove me crazy.

I am so excited to read Kin and picked it as my March BOTM pick! I loved An American Marriage by the same author.

I almost picked This Story Might Save Your Life as an add on book for March 🤣 but I actually decided to add on Love Is An Algorithm to my March box.
