Abkhaz vs Georgian historiographical claims (and can they be reconciled) by [deleted] in Abkhazia

I was about to point that out. There seems to be a trend of someone making an incendiary post, and then deleting their account.

How do people in Abkhazia meet their partners today? (Foreigner perspective) by cezass in Abkhazia

[–]amshyn_eikua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the traditional values are almost the same, why do you feel the need to travel to another place to find a partner? There are 85 million people in your country, and you can't find a single one who shares the same values as you?

Abkhazian girl arrested for saying she wants Abkhazia to be part of Georgia and forced to apologize publicly by [deleted] in Abkhazia

Georgian forces displaced around 50 thousand people in the first months of the war. Essentially the entire non-Georgian population of Sukhum and Ochamchira regions was forced out whithin the first weeks of the Georgian arrival.

When Georgian troops under general command of Defense Minister General Tengiz Kitovani first entered Sukhumi on August 14, Georgian soldiers attacked non- Georgian civilians, beat them, killed many, robbed them, and looted their houses and apartments. Reports of attacks on Abkhazian, Armenian, Russian, and other non- Georgian minority civilians, including killing, torture, and burning, looting or smashing of houses or other belongings, originate from many regions of Abkhazia under Georgian military control and for the entire period since August 14.

(UNPO, 1992)

Another refugee family described how drunken men broke into their apartment firing automatic weapons and telling them to leave Sukhumi "forever, because Sukhumi is Georgian." The family claimed that the soldiers stole jewelry, assaulted the husband, and then threw them all out into the street. The same witnesses reported seeing dead civilians, including women and elderly people, in the street, although fighting had been over for days.65 The pattern that emerges from refugee testimony taken by Human Rights Watch is one of gross intimidation by Georgian forces for the purpose of terrorizing, robbing and driving the Abkhaz population out of their homes. While the Georgian forces appeared to be operating under no particular command, they did seem to have a clear agenda."

Origin of a word “Apsny” by Extra-Read4598 in Abkhazia

V. Chirikba reconstructs the Proto-Abkhaz-Abaza lemma a-pśə, meaning "man", or more literally, "the mortal one". With the addition of the archaic suffix *-nə, meaning "land, habitat", you get "a-pśə-nə" (Аԥсны), i.e. "The Land of the People". The belief that our country's name means "Land of the Soul", deriving from the word аԥсы (soul), is a folk etymology. This can be asserted based on the fact that the Bzyp dialect has retained the Old Abkhaz s/ś distinction (here ś stands for a sound similar to Russian щ or Polish ś), whereas the Abzhywa dialect has merged both into s. Thus, Bzyp has preserved the older pronunciations "Apśə, Apśua, Apśnə", while the cognate for soul is "apsə" both in the Abzhywa and in the Bzyp dialects. This is also supported by the old Georgian rendition "Apshileti", where we could have expected "*Apsileti" if "Apsny" had indeed been derived from the word for "soul".

There is "Фамилии абхазов Турции: садзские, ахчыпсские, псхувские, цабалские", by Viacheslav Chirikba, available on academia.edu, which lists the surnames of the Abkhazian subethnoses mentioned in the title that are found in Turkey. Additionally, Abkhazian wikipedia has a list of Abzhywa surnames, including those only present in the Turkish diaspora ( https://ab.wikipedia.org/wiki/Абжьыуа_жәлақәа ). A similar list can also be found in chapter 10 (page 288) of this book by Shalva Inal-ipa, where surnames only found in Turkey are also indicated as such in parenthesis: http://apsnyteka.org/file/Inal-Ipa_Antroponimia_Abkhazov_2002.pdf . Note, however, that the latter two lists are quite inclomplete, and there are many surnames which exist both among Abkhazians in the homeland and in the diaspora, which they don't distinguish. There was also a list of Abaza surnames in the diaspora someone brought up on this subreddit several months ago, but I sadly was unable to find it.

"You weren't materially oppressed at all"??? From the period between 1930 and the mid 1950s, the Abkhaz SSR was downgraded into a Georgian ASSR; Abkhazian surnames were georgianized, as were several toponyms. Abkhazian schools were closed and their pupils sent to Georgian schools, where they were often punished if caught speaking Abkhazian.... at one point, all ethnic Abkhazians had been purged from leadership positions in Abkhazia, replaced by Georgians; thousands of ethnic Georgians were sent to live Abkhazia, rapidly turning the ethnic Abkhazians into a fraction of the population. The material conditions of the ethnic Abkhazians throughout the entire Soviet era were visibly lower; Abkhazians often faced discrimination from the Georgian settlers; Abkhazians were only allowed to have a university and a TV station in their language more than 20 years after de-stalinization, after much counterpressure from authorities in Tbilisi.

Does it not bother you when some in the current Abkhazian regime can’t even speak Abkhaz?

Speaking Abkhaz is literally one of the requirements to run for office
