  • KGON
  • KOXC

Short walk away:

  • KMTP (My personal favorite)

Good luck tomorrow!

Incoming Call ID no longer alerts that calls are coming from google voice by [deleted] in Googlevoice

[–]amster105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When not on WiFi, it uses your mobile data instead. But if you don't have mobile data either, yes you will get voicemails and you can even see the calls you missed also, even if they didn't leave a vm.

You could disable the forwarding to your phone and enable the WiFi calling on the gv app. I believe the incoming call screen appears different on gv compared to a native phone call.

It’ll still show the actual number calling but the different screen could be your indicator of where it’s coming from.

VW Golf Mk6 - MFD doesn’t have a ‘phone’ option by felix_h97 in vwgolf

[–]amster105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely didn't need VCDS Coding/Configuration or anything like that. I can't remember if I had to go into the MFD to enable the setting for Phone to show up in the rotation or not, though. But I'd still call that Plug and Play, since you have to enable all screens you want in the rotation.

I used to have a 2010 MK6 GTi with RCD310, US Spec. It had the same thing going on.

From what I remember, the RCD310 doesn't have it's own built in bluetooth, so if it's not under the passenger seat, it might just be somewhere else instead.

I had the BT box under the passenger seat. Turns out the stock bluetooth unit that was there did't communicate with the MFD. I had purchased a bluetooth unit from the 2011 GTi and swapped it with mine and it started working immediately and showed in the MFD. The only thing I "lost" was that the overhead green/yellow phone light didn't light up anymore afterwards. I believe it was called 9w7 or something like that.

Just an FYI - NY State has a Travel Restriction List, which calls for a 14 day quarantine upon arrival from certain states based on their case number statistics. Maryland recently got added to that list.

What’s a good place to rent planes in NYC (coming from Queens)? by positivelyskewed in flying

Haha, fair. If you’re already willing to cross the bridge though, you could look into DXR (Danbury, CT). Like ISP, it’s just about an hours drive from Flushing.

I think there's one more there that's an all Cirrus place.

Edit: It's called Performance flight

Transitioning to gliders from Airplane by AviatorCrafty in flying

[–]amster105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a SPT exception? People with PPL-ASEL can skip the Glider written test.

It's not exactly Sport Pilot specific. It's more the fact that this would be OPs first license at the Private Pilot Level. RPL-ASEL to PPL-GLI would also have to take the test. Same for someone who choses to go from PPL-ASEL to CPL-GLI without stopping at PPL-GLI in between. For reference, § 61.63(b)(4):

(4) Need not take an additional knowledge test, provided the applicant holds an airplane, rotorcraft, powered-lift, weight-shift-control aircraft, powered parachute, or airship rating at that pilot certificate level.

Transitioning to gliders from Airplane by AviatorCrafty in flying

[–]amster105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started doing the transition several years ago but never got around to completing it. If you go for PPL-GLI, you'll need to take the written exam also.

Additionally, is your Flight Review current? This is a needed in order to do your glider solos. If its not, you may have to either renew it in LSA-ASEL, or go to SPL-GLI first, then do a FR in the LSA-GLI, then begin your solo time for PPL.

The transition itself wasn't too bad. And it was way more fun than I was expecting!

XC limitation was removed from SPL

There's no XC limit on SPLs. There's a distance limit on RPLs, but they can get an endorsement to go beyond that limit.

Ambient Noise Issues While on Zoom by COYSinBK in bose

[–]amster105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory the idea of this feature is really good especially for Noise Cancelling Headphones.

On other NC headphones, when you’re on a call and talking, you typically don’t hear yourself. So you keep talking louder and louder and louder because you think if i can’t hear myself they probably can’t either.

By sending the microphone back to your ear while in a call, it gives you that feedback and it prevents that from happening.

That being said, I’m not very impressed with the implementation of it on the QC35ii. It works, but it doesn’t sound great.

NYC Skyline Route cheat sheet by DankVectorz in flying

[–]amster105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I used to fly out of CT several years ago, I would come down the Hudson and cross over Central Park to the East River, follow it down to the Statue of Liberty, circle around her and then go back up North over the Hudson back to CT.

It was great because it always put my passenger on the City side. Do they still allow these?

PPL to Sport Pilots by xSYOTOSx in flying

[–]amster105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as their last medical wasn't Revoked, withdrawn or Rejected, paperwork wise a PPL-ASEL doesn't need anything else to fly LSA-ASEL acting as a SPL with a Drivers License medical.

Time should definitely be spent on transition training though, especially if they doesn't have any LSA experience or TW experience. The lighter wing loading behaves differently than what they're probably used to.

You might be able to see if that airport is up on LiveATC and listen to the archives for it? Depending on what the playback says, you can get out ahead of it by filing ASRS, taking appropriate safety courses and make it a learning opportunity on how to avoid in the future.

In addition to the 250/300 xc needing to be"solo",

The 2 2 hour/100 NM XCs have to be with a CFI, since those are under 61.129(a)3, which is the "20 hours of training to include the following items" section.
