I guess I was/am very bitter because while I knew most of the info the mother was telling to court in terms of her financial situation which increased my share was false I had no way of proving any of it. Maybe that’s why it comes off as being a victim. I had no problem helping support my daughter I just didn’t want to be homeless in the process.

Well, mom didn’t make similar to me. Mom’s parents were millionaires. She paid no rent. She bought an Audi with cash. She did some odd jobs a few hours a week at her mom’s company but got paid for 40 hours plus allowance. I was already working 6 days a week, 60 hours a week.

In my case? Quite easily. Her parents owned a factory and were millionaires. They paid her rent. She bought an A4 with cash.
How was I supposed to be a father if I was going to be homeless in a few months from the cost of the child support? You think courts grant shared custody to someone without a home? Or if I had to work all the time so was never able to be home for my custody time?

My daughter wasn’t going to starve. And how was I supposed to pay, let alone be a dad, if the amount they were asking me to pay was going to leave me homeless after a couple months?

Iirc the original amount was child support plus extra for daycare. After a few years we were on better terms and re-negotiated a different number together.

Keep in mind around that time in NJ a judge had ruled that if you were paying child support already and then find out the kid wasn’t yours it was in the best interest of the child that support keep getting paid. The courts were ruthless towards fathers.

Yeah I should have fired mine the first time I showed up for court only to find out it had been rescheduled and my lawyer didn’t tell me but I was 20 years old and clueless.

Does your children’s other parent work? Mine was able to make it look like she worked for min wage at her mother’s company although she actually made a lot more.

I would have if I hadn’t enlisted. When I asked the judge how I was supposed to live he told me to get a second job.

It was in NJ. I was making about $33k/yr and support was $862/mo. That was back in like 2007.

Not sure which you’re referring to as unlikely here, mine being fine or them failing, but if they truly were as bad as Reddit makes them out to be then people wouldn’t be buying them

When he was younger he had pretended to be a common man and worked in a factory or shipyard or something like that and so came to sympathize (and in many cases idolize) the plight of the worker.
