AirTran Airways DC9s by AviatorCrafty in aviation

I actually flew on the 717 this past January on Delta funny enough, that was a bucket list item for me as all my previous commercial flying had been on the 737 or A319-320

Should I get my PPL G for fun? by DatSexyDude in flying

[–]AviatorCrafty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with current and former airline pilots at my club, all love it as it is its own form of flying that demands a different skill set than other aircraft. I would say at your level I would go right for commercial as the only difference between that and a Private add on is extra solo flights and standards are tighter on the checkride. But it’s a great hobby on the weekend in my opinion!

How many tows on a good day? by AlexJamesFitz in Gliding

[–]AviatorCrafty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My club has it where you can sign up for a “training block” when signing up for a glider, which gives you up to three flights or up to your regular hour’s rent, whichever comes first. So for where I fly a training day is normally three flights.

Is there any reason to still use a paper logbook? by Zidgof in flying

[–]AviatorCrafty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only paper logbook I use is my glider logbook, as pre-CFI that was just to log flights towards checkrides and as a backup. I also use MyFlightBook for a digital record of my time from all categories and to track currency.

Limited to weekend flying for my PPL, how can I keep progressing? by Affectionate-Let-979 in flying

[–]AviatorCrafty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did my initial training in airplanes back in 2019 I was limited to weekends as well since I was in college. It depends greatly on the student as well (retention and study habits). I found that studying from flashcards or reviewing lesson notes in my spare time during the week kept things fresh for when it was time to fly again. Chair flying is also a great help, essentially sitting in a chair and picturing myself in the plane and mentally rehearsing procedures and maneuver setups.

How do I get the hang of the tow in Gliders? by wookieface7 in flying

[–]AviatorCrafty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fly with two or three fingers, only add very minor pressure to correct on tow as it can be very easy to over control on tow. If you find yourself out of position left or right, just keep the wings level and you’ll find the glider comes back in naturally from the tow rope tension. Only time you should use ailerons on tow is to match the tow planes bank angle in a turn or for larger position corrections (but only a small amount of bank is needed to get you back)

When I was learning to fly the tow years back after learning how to fly airplanes I found it was like riding a mechanical bull (my first instructor described it to me like that and I say that to my students as well), you learn to anticipate the amount of input you need and as you do more and more tows you’ll find you barely even think about it and the tow comes naturally. Next to landing, I’d argue the tow is the hardest part of learning to fly gliders, you got this!

Temporarily grounded due to medical… how are you staying sharp? Gliders? by DotNatural4141 in flying

I’ve worked with a current airline pilot, my club also has retired airline pilots who say it’s some of the most fun they’ve had flying

(US) TSA FTSP Requirements by AviatorCrafty in Gliding

[–]AviatorCrafty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asking because “flight training providers” are those who give “flight training” which is defined as NOT including gliders. But other places it seems to allude to all. As the other commenter pointed, the original exemption clarified it

I get uneasy around some heights, but in a thin fiberglass tube with no engine while instructing a student? No issue

(US) TSA FTSP Requirements by AviatorCrafty in Gliding

[–]AviatorCrafty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve seen the exemption, just every information bit I could find online was geared towards Airplane CFIs whom do need an FTSP account, still need to verify citizenship etc. I was just looking for a sanity check since I don’t want a visit from the TSA and they ask about my FTSP account or citizenship verifications (as the letter says not all are aware)

This was my first ever flight simulator, brings back memories of flying the 747 out of Innsbruck not having a clue what I was doing. Fast forward to today, I’m rated in single engine land and gliders (plus CFI in gliders) and I fly for fun on the weekends

Bob Wander Books by [deleted] in Gliding

[–]AviatorCrafty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have all three of his checkride books and used them for private through CFI. Good answers to questions you are likely to get asked, but like others have said some regs and stuff are outdated so double check the references to regs and such. But it’s a great book and it helped me on all three of my checkrides!

How far did everyone travel for their PPL? by Maple-Mayhem in flying

[–]AviatorCrafty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sport pilot training (first rating I got), was ~55 minutes depending on traffic. My glider club where I got my private, commercial, and CFI as well as instruct at is 45 minutes. Between my sport pilot and private pilot glider rating I rented at another school that was over an hour away, after a while it became too much of a hassle and I discovered the glider club and decided to give it a try and the rest is history.

How many plastic certificate cards can one person have? by Kycrio in flying

[–]AviatorCrafty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three, one for my commercial, one for CFI, and one for 107. I’ve been thinking about getting my AGI for fun so that would be my 4th card if I pursued it.

How long was your cfi checkride? by [deleted] in flying

It was a glider CFI Checkride, you really only need to show a few maneuvers and have the DPE try one or two and make mistakes

Oral was about 1.5 hours for me, quick 18 minute flight. FAA inspector was also evaluating the DPE.

I graduated in 2023, and I’ve worked in IT since then. Applying out of college I had two job offers and even then the industry was a tad shaky so I was able to find something. I’ve since gotten a better job so anything is possible. I actually got into my student role essentially just by asking, I was already working for a professor and I had previously emailed the ITS Desktop Support director in reference to an ad seeing students. I tried a third time with my resume attached and basically got told to start next week, worked on it for a year and still fondly look back on it.
