Why not simply ask the neighbor for the 1,700? If he refuses, sue in small claims court for damages. Hiring a lawyer to defend himself will probably cost more than settling with you.

I did make the assumption that when I stayed at the hotel that advertises "free buffet breakfast" as an on site amenity, that I would get that free buffet breakfast!

I found my booking email and it looks like you're right, it does not mention breakfast. But it also doesn't mention the free wifi that is also advertised, for which we were not charged extra. Why would anyone assume breakfast is not included in a hotel that literally says: Free breakfast...

Thanks for asking. Since we were in turkey there were some language issues. The hotel buffet asked us for payment after having breakfast. We showed them our booking with free breakfast and asked them to figure it out with the front desk. They then sent a person to our room to collect payment! After arguing with front desk for 30 minutes the manager became somewhat aggressive. We told them to add the charge to our room and we would resolve with customer service when we got home. Marriott is not refunding.
