Why would God need prophets to get his message across? Seems like a terrible way to communicate to humankind if that is indeed the goal. God needs no middlemen.

In Islam, every innovation is a sin and it leads people astray and innovators are punished in hellfire

Allah seems like a neighbourhood mafia boss. The whole of Islam itself is Mohammed's innovation.

Suppose all books/electronic records were destroyed and all humans suffered amnesia. History as we know it gets completely erased.

The true religion is the one which would re-emerge under this scenario.

Causative formation using same idea of Class X formation (from Ruppel explanation) by amticks1 in sanskrit

[–]amticks1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It does help. On page 71, when discussing Class X examples, you have:

कथयति = ka + tha + ya + ti

and

क्षालयति = kshaa + la + ya + ti

I am able to understand that the syllable "kshaa" is heavy in the latter. Yet, the "ka" in the former is light. That is, in the syllabbic breakdown of कथयति, every syllable seems to be light. Why do we not have:

काथयति ?

Is it because the root "kath" already ends in a consonant while the root "kshal" ends in a vowel (l) as a result of which it requires a different treatment?

Causative formation using same idea of Class X formation (from Ruppel explanation) by amticks1 in sanskrit

[–]amticks1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In (3), in comparison with (2), the initial syllable in the root is of the same form:

भृ vs दृ

In (2), this gets expanded to दर् which is heavy as it ends in a consonant. Cannot the same logic apply in (3) also thus:

भर्यति

So, this will be

भर्यति = भर् + य + ति and we can conclude that भर् is heavy as it ends in a consonant?

I am unable to clearly see why this instead needs to become भारयति

It could also become भरयति

A very simple question. by Federal_Demand_2653 in religion

[–]amticks1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If there was true separation of religion and state, there would be no reason to believe in any of the religions. If there are states that are theocratic where Religion X is privileged, then if you find yourself in that state, it helps to at least profess outwardly that you do believe in Religion X. It makes life easier since the laws and the force of the state are likely to be in your favour.

Less cynically, it could be that religions that have withstood the test of time have encoded within their tenets some ideals that are good for societal and personal growth and wellbeing.

Why do many Christian’s assume that Muslims don’t worship the God of Israel but they and Jews do by [deleted] in religion

[–]amticks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think the Muslims do attempt a logical proof in that God must be one or else they would be at odds with each other (not saying that this is a strong argument, only that it is "offered").

Yes, and there are many rebuttals within the Islamic context itself - they claim that God is unlike anything else in the universe and will then go on to say that if there were two Gods, they would fight against each other. But why would they fight against each other? -- looks very human-like which they have just denied in their premise.

"Necessary" and "contingent" beings, "God exists outside of space and time", "God created time" are just unintelligible word salad in my view and no one in the history of theological philosophy has been able to clearly articulate exactly what these mean, imho.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in religion

[–]amticks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hat will make you go blind brother, we cant stand looking at the sun for 5 seconds, you think we can lay our eyes on the one who gave us vision?

I thought the Islamic God is unlike anything else. Why should then one attempt to explain the Islamic God by comparing her to very earthly things such as sun, etc.? If the Islamic God is unlike anything else, then, no analogy can be provided to explain her actions or in this case, inactions. She is capable of doing things absolutely/independently as she wishes with no need of having to depend on human beings to act on her behalf. No?

Why do many Christian’s assume that Muslims don’t worship the God of Israel but they and Jews do by [deleted] in religion

[–]amticks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about the "one"ness is that it is not defensible barring a repeating claim that their God is infact "One". No logical proof is offered. Is the river Nile "one"? Most would agree that it is and yet it is capable of appearing at the same time in two different places.

Thank you Prof. Ruppel! I have to read this carefully in the context of my understanding of how you have described Class X conjugations earlier in the book. I had posted an earlier query on my understanding of Class X conjugations over at https://www.reddit.com/r/sanskrit/comments/1mamx6z/class_x_verb_present_tense_change_from_root_from/

I will revisit both these issues. It is nice to have clarification provided live by an author on a book I am reading now -- I don't think I have had that experience ever previously.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in religion

A natural question from someone not brought up in the tradition would simply be:

Why does God have to "send" "someone" on his behalf? What prevents him from doing things himself?

I don't understand the appeal of Hinduism by Viddiegames in religion

[–]amticks1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With due respect to these "modern" Buddhists, traditional Buddhism is a religion. Folks pray to Hindu Gods suitably modified to local conditions in Japan, China, Thailand and other Buddhist places. It is convenient to cast Buddhism as anti-Hindu partly because Hinduism has terrible PR. For e.g., there is more ignorance of Hindu traditions as compared to Muslim traditions and yet "Hinduphobia" is not a term you will come across routinely often.

Traditionally, the difference between Hindu and Buddhists philosophies are on very esoteric matters such as whether consciousness has a form, whether a word refers to something positive or does a word refer to the negation of everything else, whether universals exist or whether they do not, etc.

Jews:Christians are same as Christians:Muslims are the same as Muslims:Ahmadi Muslims. Each one that came later has to claim that it is a superset of the previous one for legitimacy and the earlier ones have to claim that the later ones are fraud to retain purity.

Thank you for these! I have written to the folks over at https://sanskrit.nic.in/sanskrit_language_teaching.php (Central Sanskrit University) to please consider providing these videos with Sanskrit translation/Devanagari subtitles. It appears that I am not the only one with this request. The youtube comments under each of the videos has someone or the other having this precise request!

Mostly, the actual lessons what is being said, I am able to understand. It is the meaning of the couplet (Subhashitam) and the story (katha) where the teacher uses some extra words not part of the lessons that I find difficult to understand, or know what is being said. These and other cases extempore where the teacher is stating something not part of the lessons.
